| Not that i am an expert but it seems you are doing very good....you aren't repeating the commands to get him to listen and that is what I know to try to watch for.... |

| great job..what a smart little boy..the only thing i would comment on is that its not necessary to say his name every time you say a command..but that is far from a problem |

And here are a few more videos
We went to our second puppy class tonight. All went well (apart from when he started barking at me... I told him off then he peed on the floor, he was obviously trying to tell me
And I feel a bit bad - Luke (12) comes with us to training and he asked to have a go, so I let him - the trainer came and said it's not a good idea as it will confuse Hogan - but on the other hand I need Luke to feel involved. I guess it will be a case of keeping him involved at home, but just me doing the actual training?
Anyway, tonight we did our first attempt at agility - hogan LOVED it. Only very very basic stuff because of his age - but he loved it, was a complete natural!
Anyway, vids:

I guess you figured out the videos. Anyway, I disagree with your trainer. These dogs can and should get used to multiple handlers if that is what they are going to get at home. The key is you and Luke have to use the same commands and be consistent. So, have a talk with the trainer before class and let her know that you and Luke both need to learn how to handle Hogan. If she doesn't let you, then just work at home. Hogan will get it. My oldest girl takes commands from anyone. She is a therapy dog and that is one of the things the kids we work with respond to with her. They think they are making huge training accomplishments with her because she does what they tell her to do. All of my dogs respond to both my nephews and my mom and dad. As for the name before the command, that is really personal preference. I use the name first for two reasons 1) I have three dogs and I don't always give the same command for all three dogs (I play games with them to make sure they are listening and thinking where I give different commands for each dog), 2) In competition if they are not as focused on me as they need to be it gives them a second to refocus and be listening for the command. For example, on the recall sometimes when I leave the dog and walk across the ring something happens to cause them to look away. Saying their name first and then the command brings their attention back to me. Ideally, their attention should never leave you, but in a young dog in the early parts of training they do get distracted, especially GSPs. The caution here is they should not respond to the name, but the command. So, I proof and play games with mine where I just say their name. If they respond and come if I am proofing a recall, then I says oops and put them back in the sit. I also mix in other random words. Again if they respond, I put them back and start over. I don't correct them or say anything, I just put them back into the starting position and try again. This helps focus and reinforces the word you are using. Later you can drop the name or not at your preference. |

By the way I do agility with Halo and she loves it. Just be sure you keep the jumps as baby jumps until he is older and his growth plates have closed. It is great though to introduce him to things like tunnels. Shorthairs make great agility dogs.
There is a Yahoo group for Performance GSPs (everything performance besides hunting and field, and no conformation) that many of the obedience, rally, agility, and tracking GSP folks belong too. Here is a link if anyone is interested.

You have to join to see the pictures and stuff. |

As far as saying the name all the time...I always say it before the command because I have 2 dogs....still working on them recognizing when I am commanding one and not the other.... As far as Luke helping, I personally disagree with the trainer because coming from someone with a family and kids I want my dog to listen to everyone and not just me....If your trainer insist he doesn't work with Hogan during the class I would have him come and watch so he can learn that way and then you all work at home on everything. I have had my now 6 year old (5 at the time) work with Blitz from puppy to now on the come and stay commands. |
