PIERRE, SD - The South Dakota House on Monday passed a bill that would make it a Class 6 felony to kill an on-duty police service dog.

The bill also would make it a Class 1 misdemeanor to intentionally injure torment, strike, disable or tamper with a law enforcement support animal.

Martha Vanderlinde, D-Sioux Falls, says police dogs undergo intense training to serve their communities and should be protected.

The measure excludes an officer or a veterinarian who puts down a police dog to relieve undue suffering and pain. The bill now heads to the Senate.

Im happy. just now needs to be signed and approved.

Sometimes i feel sorry for the dogs that do this line of work, bc they didnt choose to do this line of work. they were forced to do it. Not saying its not humane to do so, but we do train our dogs to hunt, some may not want to but we at least try.

I will be glad to the dog in the line of duty get hurt or even killed and see some kind of action taken against the Perp.

I always would have thought assaulting a police dog is no different then assaulting a police officer. This should be a slam dunk.

I would think that a they would be protected by the same laws as the human officers. I think that if you are issued a "Badge" from law inforcement then you are an "officer" of the law whether you have 2 legs or 4. JMO

This sounds like a good thing! Those dogs are officers in my eyes so those assaulting them should be held to those standards!
