Blitz has not shown an interest to counter surfing, however Donner jumps up and puts his front feet on the cabinets (he can't reach counter height yet)....we are already teaching this is wrong....

Before we got Donner we were working on Blitz staying out of the kitchen while we are eating. He did just fine by going and laying down in the living room. When we got Donner we didn't want him out of site so we slacked in this department...though I suppose I could put them in their kennels while we eat, so I'll think about that.

My dogs do good if my kids have food in their hands, but if their friends do then they follow and try and take the food...so I am working on that...good thing is I know the dogs respect my kids at least so we are getting somewhere! Try telling a 6 year old (my son's friend) to not laugh and move away from the dog, the kids don't listen so how do I get the dogs to listen, LOL!

I do agree about good table/food manners for dogs. My aunt and uncle have a huge golden retriever and he sits with his butt on the floor and head on the table while you are eating and then they give him table scraps as he does that cuz they think it is cute that he is part of the family!!!

I once had dinner with friends and their friends (guests) set their little dog ON the table and fed it right off their plate, the food that our friend had prepared for US to eat. That was the worst manners - human and dog - I have ever witnessed.

This was a situation when I really had to exercise the "leave it command" with Rocky and Jackson(lab)!!Having company dogs over takes more to control counter surfing

PS Looking at this pic. Shorthair Liver is similar to Chocolate color in a Lab. Not a whole lot of difference in the shades of brown.

Hello Marie,

Do these two also drink milk right out of the carton while they have the fridge door open?
How gross.

Microwave ovens and regular ovens work as good places to stash food that you don't want the dogs to get. Jenny, my main counter surfer, really likes bread. It now gets stored in the microwave.

Xara is the Queen of counter surfing. I attempt to catch her in the act to discipline her. Her discipline is a firm OFF! and a directive to leave the kitchen. She will listen if I am right there, but let me turn my back or leave the room and all bets are off. She's stolen more than a few things from the counters.
Sniper is good about the counters for the most part, but he also picked up that he is not allowed in the kitchen when food is out much faster than Xara is learning it.

What does the fact that this thread is 3 pages long going on 4 tell us? We are not alone!

BTW Marie it's counter-productive to take a photo when you catch them in the act instead of disciplining them..I've been guilty of that too :)

I don't have a counter surfer but this picture made both my wife and I laugh so much. This GSP looks exactly like our Oskar right down to the collar and ticking

If my dog went in the fridge I would have to train him to bring me beer! Then it's all good. Help yourself and get me a beer please.

Thankfully no counter surfing as yet, but he's not big enough to get up yet. He sometimes jumps up and puts his paws on the counter but i tell him "off" and he gets down pretty quick. He sometimes whines a bit while we're eating our tea but we just ignore him and he settles down on his bed, failing that I just tell him to lie on his bed and he does. If he's behaved himself he sometimes gets some of our left over food, but it is ALWAYS placed into HIS food bowl to eat, never given from our hands or allowed to lick our plates. That way he knows where his food is eaten, and also that he's being allowed to eat the "boss's" left over food. I think that's a good thing for him to believe in, as long as its AFTER we've finished eating...correct me if i'm wrong :)

They say "in the wild" the pack leader eats first and gets the best chunk. What I have always done with my dogs is I eat first, and I make sure the dog sees or smells that, and keeps a distance. Then I fix the dog's meal and she get to eat. Putting leftover in the bowl at that point should be fine.
