Been thinking about getting a buddy for Buddy, our first GSP, now a little over a year old.  Got him as a pup.  I like the idea of getting a rescue, but all the rescue groups around here (New England) seem to require a fenced-in yard, something we don't have.  We live on 50 acres in a rural area (Buddy was trained/is training on recall w/an e-collar).

Without the fenced-in yard, will I just be wasting my own and other people's time?  Just wondering if anybody knows how strict this requirement is.  Thanks.

Don't know about over there, but over here you have to have a fenced in garden and they come and do home checks. Not sure how keen they would be if you said you'd use an E collar to train the new one without having a yard (i'm not saying that cos i've got an issue with them, intending to get one myself) but if you don't try you wont know, you'd just need to be honest and upfront with them and see what happens. The places here that had dogs i liked wouldn't let me rescue until i'd castrated my boy!! Ridiculous!!

I tried to get a rescue back in 2008 but didn't qualify because I live in a city apartment and don't have a yard, much less a fenced one. I knew what the breed needs and had ideas as to how to provide the dog with what it needs exercise wise but they hummed and hawed and in the end I looked elsewhere and ended with my Tessa - from a breeder who had no misgivings regarding my living situation after I explained and provided references.

I respect the rescue folks for their policies because ownership of this breed is a little more involved and they want to avoid that the dog is returned, or worse, gets lost or killed. I hope that next time I have my foot in the door as I can now "proof" that I am able to care for a GSP :)

How long have you had dogs in general? How long have you lived there with that set-up? Can you provide vet references that vouch for you as a responsible dog owner? Is it possible for you to install an invisible fence or any kind of fence (I must say I find the idea of no fence for a GSP a little unsettling, even if e-collar trained. These dogs are hunting machines. But that is just me)? Are you a member of a club, obedience school, etc, that can vouch for you? Not sure if that would help but it may.

To live without dogs would mean accepting a form of blindness. [Thomas McGuane]

I didnot have a fenced in backyard when we adopted Rescue Rocky 7 years ago. I just shared my plans with the GSP Rescue on the application on how I was going to exercise with safety in mind for Rocky. Initially, tied a 16 foot cord hook up off our front porch so Rocky could go out and potty in our front yard . Walked him on an extension leash in the fields and six foot leash on town walks. Told the Rescue I did have access to a 5 acre fenced in dog park. Also had permission to exercise Rocky daily my neighbors fenced in backyard with her Salukis across the street. So in other words, when adopting a rescue just tell them your plans on how you will safely exercise your rescue GSP and I think they will be ok about it. Once trained with good recall and field off leash commands, I gave Rocky free off leash runny times in the open fields. Rocky is very smart and trained very quickly.

Leverage that you already own an shorthair and have no fence. Get your vets recommendation based on your current shorthair. Talk about the trainining and exercise you do with your dog. Discuss your normal daily routine. Dog is supervised when out, is on a check cord until solid with a recall, etc. Take pictures to share if you can. May not work, but worth a try.

We addoped Zeke from a multibreed rescue last August.  Of course they didn't have any papers for him, but by look and temperment he is likely a pure GSP (he's about 3).  At the time, we didn't have a fence, but planned on installing one.  Although they had specified a fence in their posting, they were happy to adopt him once they felt we knew what the breed required.

I think it's worth talking to the group you're looking to adopt from.  I think that most organizations are looking for people who are right for the dogs that they have.  Unfortunately, some groups put more weight on the mechanics.  The mechanics are part of it, but only a part.

I volunteer for (and have adopted from) GSP Rescue New England. A physical fence isn't required as long as you have some type of invisible fence in place. We do home visits, so the volunteer will always check to make sure that you have one or both of those options. Good luck!

That is good to hear!! I just invested in a wireless fencing system that we are starting to train the beast on!
