I know someone else mentioned their dog waking up early and not wanting to go back to sleep...well Donner is now up and ready to go at 4am! I don't let him stay up I take him from my sons bed and bring him to bed with me....where he will settle in for about 30 minutes and then he is back to biting me and licking me and crying (luckily they are quiet cries and not howling)...however Blitz can hear him....so Blitz gets out of my other sons bed so I tell him no go back to bed, Blitz then goes under my sons bed instead of in it (he has always liked his kennel and I think this reminds him of it) now my son is awake so he goes under the bed too so he can snuggle with his dog!
Finally 6am rolls around and I can't take the biting and licking anymore so I get up with Donner and of course Blitz gets up to which then wakes my son up...Of course my youngest son who is supose to be sleeping with Donner is still asleep through all this and doesn't wake up till 7:30am!
Any way I have decided (not sure it is a good idea, but we will try it) that for a while the dogs will sleep in their kennels. Blitz always did with it in my bedroom...they go in them when we leave them home alone and they don't get whiny or howling. They stay quiet in them when we get home till we go down and let them out. Donner hasn't been put in the kennel at night so this will be new for him (I suspect that even with Blitz right there he may get loud in the morning...I will go down around 2 or 3am to let them have a potty break cuz Donner seemed to need that when sleeping in bed with my son (though Blitz slept through it, so potty break will be new to him)...
So wish me luck in this bedtime change! Oh yeah the boys are not too happy with this change they want to snuggle with the dogs at bedtime, so they are kind of mad at me, but oh well...something needs to change! |

allow snuggle time when the boys go to bed but make sure they understand that the dogs have to go to their own bed later.. then right before you go to bed get the dogs and kennel them.. this way you have the best of both worlds... My kids have "tucked in" with the dogs for as long as they can remember.. but rarely do they ever "wake up" with any animal. Carrie |

You may find it a lot easier... I get up at 6am to let Hogan out, a few mornings I tried carrying him up to our room (we sleep in attic conversion) to have a cuddle but only once did he settle - gave up on that idea very quickly! If I need to have a bit more sleep I just put him back in his crate for an hour or so |

I wish you luck and alot of patience. I predict many nights and morings of howling. I HOPE I am wrong and they settle quickly. Be sure to let us know how it goes. Tell the boys if they want to sleep with the dogs they will have to sleep in the kennels - LOL |

I feel I got pretty lucky with my pup Grace, she's 11 weeks old now, she sleeps from like 10 at night to abouit 2 a.m. potty break, then she goes right back to sleep until I get up, whether it's 5:30 or 7:00. I can either let her stay in her crate or in the bed, its the same. When I got her at 7 weeks I always let her sleep in the bed, the overnight potty break was on a leash so she couldn't run around, as soon as she went, I scoop her up, bring her to bed, get her nice and warm and she was out in no time. Good luck to you. |

Actually everything went so well! I let the boys give good night kisses and hugs to the dogs and the dogs helped tuck the boys in. Donner was a bit confused why I didn't put him in bed so he laid down on the floor. After the kids were tucked in I put the dogs down in their kennels and I went to bed too. So bedtime was around 10pm. No whining or howling at that time! My husband is on night shift and got home around 2:30am which woke me up so I went down and let the dogs out for a potty break and then put them back in their kennels. Still no whining! I am now so used to be woken up around 6am so my body woke me up but I laid in bed till 6:30am and then went down and got the dogs up. On school days the alram goes off at 6:20am...on the weekends with my horse back riding practice on Saturday and church on Sunday I can't sleep much past 6:30am, 7am would be the latest... All in all I am so happy! I hope there is no howling tonight/tomorrow morning! That is funny about telling the kids that if they want to sleep with the dogs they have to sleep in the kennel....they would do it! While playing I have caught them with the dogs in the kennels, matter of fact I have found both boys and both dogs in 1 kennel, all 4 of them!!! |

Our dogs LOVE their crates. In fact Razzie is now in the habit of telling us when she is ready for bed. They go into their crates around 9-9:30 and my husband lets them out around 4:30 (don't ask why he gets up that early -- I can't figure it out ). They would probably happily sleep there until 6 or 7. |

Wow isn't that fantastic! Ours go for final wee and bedtime at 10pm most nights, so maybe i'll try not to come down in the night. They're never crying but we've been letting them out later and later. It's now up to 3.30am but hey be nice not to get up at all. |

| If they haven't been crying to be let out I bet you can go all night without letting them out! |

Bentley is pretty good now that we have our routine sorted. Bed time is around 10pm so its "In your crate Bentley" off he pops and snuggles in. I get up at 6am to take him out for his morning walk, then I leave the house at 7:30ish to head off to work, putting him back in his crate. He settles back down for a morning nap happy as Larry He's not allowed on my bed at all, though if he's been a good boy and sits at the bottom of the stairs patiently I allow him upstairs so he can follow me around as I get ready for work. |

| Philly - thats the routine Hogan will be in soon, when I go back to work he will go in his crate for a few hours in the morning. At the moment he goes in there while I go to the stables/errands and he is fine. How long is Bentley in there for? |

While he's still a puppy i put him in from 7:30 till about 10am when the kid next door pops over and lets him out for a pee and a little fuss. I'm home at 12 for lunch so i take him out for a walk for an hour, then back in his crate from 1-3, kid next door again, then i'm home at around 5pm for his longer evening romp through the fields and along the canal. I could probably leave him longer now, sometimes on a weekend if we need to go out he's alone for 3-4 hours in his crate but he's happy in there. He has a chew for his teeth and a puzzle type one with some cheese and/or some treats inside to keep him busy for a bit too. Looking into getting one of those puzzle toys for him to do. |
