Cooper and I were outside playing frisbee when I noticed a shed antler toward the back of our yard. We live on a shallow ravine. I know there have been threads about antlers in place of bones and chew chips. Would this needed to be treated in any certain way before I could safely give it to my 11-month-old to chew on?

Id give it to him as is if it is a fresh shed. You could always soak it or something first...but as far as I see it, they eat worse things when they're outside (including deer poop haha), so an antler can't be too bad. Dax has a bunch of sheds that Ive found.

I wouldn't think it would hurt him.

probably won't hurt him, but I'd boil it first. Who knows what may have been on the ground, flies may have landed on it, there may have been feces around (paranoid after the episode of "beaver fever")...

I think boiling could make it brittle so at the most I would just do a quick dip in boiling water, and not boiling it for an extended time.

I doubt you need to boil the deer antlers the weather and sun tend to take care of any issues. If you want to do something wash them in water and use a little soap, just make sure you rinse and dry them well.
