Is it possible to buy deodorant for dogs, something to make them smell nice? Baira comes to the stables with me everyday and comes home stinking!!! I can't bath her everyday and I wondered if there is anything I can spray on her to make her smell better.

Have you tried the waterless shampoos?  Here is a link to one: www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm

These work pretty good and don't take as long a full bath.

Another option is this homemade baking soda and lavendar powder.  I haven't tried this, but it should work and is harmless to the dog. You might want to make a little larger quantity for a shorthair.

1)      Sift the baking soda and the lavender into a bowl to combine. Apply the powder to your dog's coat a teaspoon at a time, working it through the fur to the skin. Let the powder sit on the dog for 10 to 15 minutes.

2)      Groom the dog with the brush, removing the majority of the powder from its coat.

3)      Run a baby wipe over the dog's fur to remove any remaining baking soda mixture. Avoid the dog's face and eyes.

4)      Repeat this procedure once a month, if necessary.

Things you will need:

  • 2 tbsp. baking soda
  • Pinch of ground dried lavender
  • Sifter
  • Brush
  • Baby wipes
  • Glass jar, like a baby food jar

I don't see why you could use any dried herb. I would think dried orange peel might be good too.

To me, perfumes just mask a smell and I find a combination of perfume and stink worse than just the stink. So baking soda seems the better way to go, as it absorbs odor rather than adding another layer.

We used to sprinkle baking soda on our carpets 15 minutes or so before vacuuming. Worked! Although nothing replaces a good wash to REMOVE the dirt and odors.

I absolute hate the perfumes as all they do is cover up the smell, plus most are pretty obnoxious just on their own. I haven't tried the baking soda mix, but the waterless shampoos are pretty good.
