So basically i'm having real problems toilet training the new pup.  He's grasped that he doesn't poop in the house, and will sometimes loiter by the back door, mostly my timings mean i let him out when he needs to go rather than he asks as such.

But peeing is a whole different kettle of fish.  He gives absolutely NO warning, no sniffing, nothing, just squats and goes.  He will go when i take him out (which is every 15 mins or so, after eating, after drinking, after playing blah blah i feel taking him out is taking over my life!!)  but then he'll come back in and squat on the floor sometime

I'm treating him and telling him he's a good boy when he goes outside, and the weathers nice so i've been able to have the door open but still..sometimes inside sometimes outside.  And he's also got an annoying habit of peeing on rupert's bed so i'm spending all my time washing that over and over.  He's good in his crate and i can leave him for a few hours no accident.

Hmmmm, any ideas??  Tips?  I feel i'm doing all i can, and i've been studying the past week so i took time off work and spent all my time in the kitchen supervising them to get him toilet trained.

Thanks!

ps rupert's no longer got separatino anxiety since we got dex, and they both sleep in the kitchen at night now wihtout a peep.  RESULT!

So how old is your pup again? I had similar problems with Ringo and about the time I really frustrated the light bulb came on and he has been fine since. He was much older than my girls when the light bulb came on, around 5 months before the accidents stopped completely. Just stay vigilant and keep doing what you are doing. If he is peeing allot on Rupert's bed, I think I would pick that up during the day or move it somewhere he can't get to to stop that behavior. I would also close off all the house to him and keep him with you all the time. If he starts peeing grab him up, tell him no (but only if you catch him in the act), and put him outside to finish. Also, be sure when you clean up after him you are using something that kills the odor (store bought products like Resolve for pets or just vinegar and water will work). If the odor is not killed the dogs will go back to the same vicinity and continue to pee in that area.

Glad the separation stuff got cleared up. I truly think that shorthairs are meant to come in at least pairs and are happiest that way.

Thanks Bev. Yeah, i'm over the moon that rupert's happier and i no longer have to take him everywhere i go!

I've been washing the floor like a maniac, fortunately it's slate tiles, and disinfect every time he goes. And he's not allowed out of the kitchen period unless we are there with him in the living room. He sometimes makes a break for it as we sneak out the door, just to go pee in the hall. What a brat!

As he pees little and often he's often finished by the time i scoop him up and stick him outside. i think it's like your boy, he's just not getting it. he's better than he was i guess, but it's so so frustrating. Rupert was about 4 1/2 months when there were no accidents whatsoever, but was asking to go out by this time, and the accidents were few and far between. so i'm just comparing them i guess, but every dog's different.

I think i'll stick rupert's bed on top of the crate while dex is out and about then, not like rupert gets much sleep when he's getting attacked!

Thanks for the advice.

I know how you feel! Donner had no signs that he had to go he would just go...I literally followed him around the house and did nothing except follow him for the first 2 1/2 weeks he was home!

This last week (which is our 3rd week having him) he has finally been getting better and we have had no accidents. I don't have to have him in sight at all times either, but then he finds something to chew, but at least it isn't potty or poops in the house!

I think you are doing everything right so I think you just have to wait it out!

Blimey, I didn't realise how blessed I was. Hogan was potty trained COMPLETELY within 5 days of me having him!

From my limited experience I would say that you are doing all the right rights, hopefully some time soon it will just "click".

The only thing I did different, when I saw Hogan peeing, because I couldn't pick him up quick enough, as soon as I saw him I would make a loud noise - shout, clap or bang something - that would get his attention enough to stop him mid flow.

No advice that hasnt been said already, but Dax is a pee machine too! He was more so when he was younger....Ive never seen a dog pee soo much! I felt like I was taking him out every 5 minutes! Fortunately he learned quick...but still would need to go out very often. He's 5 months old now and doesnt need to go out quite as often.

shelly-

are you saying your brand new pup is potty trained already?!?!?!? Are you using pads? That seems almost unbelievable. These little guys have such tiny little bladders.

I'd say Joey was fully finished with accidents at 5 1/5 to 6 months, which seemed about average from what I read. The inside pooping was done well before that. She still asks to go out pretty frequently.. probably once an hour, but sometimes I think she just wants to play outside

You guys with male pups, be prepared for the marking behavior when they get around a year or so. I don't have any problems with Ringo in my house, but if I took him where there are other dogs he would try to mark. Not so much now (he will be 2 at the end of May) as I have worked with him, unless he smells where another dog has already pee'd. He is still intact, but I am not sure that makes a huge difference with this behavior. I am warning you guys so you can watch for it and nip it in the bud fast as it is easier if they never get started with that behavior.

I can't believe the average is so old - JoeyBean, we picked up Hogan on the saturday, by the Friday he was FULLY potty trained - not only did he "ask" at the door to go out - but he rang the bell too! (We have a bell hanging on a string type ornament).
He has done that ever since (we have had him 2.5 weeks now) and we haven't had ANY accidents since then!!!

We didn't use pads apart from the first few nights, then he started shredding them so that stopped. He goes 8 hours through the night no accidents (we used to get up twice through the night with him but now we just sleep through) and probably asks to go out every few hours during the day.

I guess he must have the bladder of an elephant?!

Blitz was trained within probably 5 days too....he is an extremely well behaved boy...I think if I really wanted to he could do amazing at obedience cuz he just wants to please...However If I had Blitz outside he would pee every 10 minutes for as long as he was outside (we timed it once)...but in the house he knew to hold it....only after a week I think he slept the entire night without having to go out.

Donner is my monster but like I said he is getting the hang of it and is now showing signs of asking to go out.

I have to add that like Shelly if I could not get to either puppy when they started potting in the house I will yell no or ah ah! then scoop them up and put them outside. Most of the time just yelling that made them stop and they could finish outside where they would get lots of praise and a treat.

How is the marking around a year old if they have been fixed? We got Blitz neutered at 6 months cuz I didn't want any manliness coming through with having young kids...

Splat - They will still mark although I don't think they are as bad. Just for the record, girls mark too they just don't lift their leg and they aren't as determined to mark as the boys for the most part.

I'm sure something is just waiting to click in his head but it might be worth checking if he has a urine infection. The vet gave me some paper dipper things to put in her pee when she did it inside. We were not suspecting a urine infection it was just part of her first health check. He said if anything goes green to go back and see him....it didn't. I do know from past experience that dogs (and humans) with even slight urine infections need to pee ALOT.

He'll be having his jab next week so i'll get him checked out, though he's going no more frequently than rupert did, just a lot more inside. Though he did have an accidnt last night, even though we get up at 2.30 for a pee so maybe....

Donner seemed to catch on to the potty thing just after I took him for his first jab! So maybe that will be the turning point for you too!

Just managed to wangle a jab tomorrow instead, so Splat i'll keep ya posted.
Want him to have a general check over anyway as he's really small and weedy compared to your puppies and rupert when he was that age.

That is one thing I like about training with an older dog around.. Macey (my oldest shih-tzu) has been instrumental in helping house break Tasha, Wachter, and 2 cats. She also worked with us on 3 shih-tzus, in training them to a doggy door that we took for a friend who was going into the hospital and coming out in a wheelchair. Mind you there was a lot on my part too, but if there was an accident fixing to happen she would warn us and we would hustle to get dogs outside.

From my experience.. the longer a pup stays with a house-broke parent/mentor.. the easier job you will have housebreaking.

Thats abnormal right to be potty trained at 9 weeks? I've never heard of that before.. from reading on here it seemed like 4-5 months was normal. Joey knew she was supposed to go outside pretty early on but sometimes she couldn't hold it. I'm amazed that some people get their pups trained so early.

I say Blitz was trained at about 9/10 weeks old but I was having to let him out a lot, I just figured out his signs and he figured out how to ask....if I didn't get him out right away when he was asking he would not be able to hold it, but then it was my fault for not getting him out when he asked. Plus Blitz didn't wander away from me so it was easy to watch him and he didn't go to the door he would whine (now he does both goes to the door and whines) to ask to go out.

It is easy for me to spend time watching the dogs cuz I am an at home mom with my kids off at school all day, so my dogs are my babies!

Donner has proven to be a bit tougher but he is now 11 weeks and hasn't had an accident all week! Though I think with Blitz around and the weather getting nicer he wants to be outside.

I also want to add by potty trained I don't mean I could leave them loose in the house and home alone and they would not go potty...cuz if I left them alone they would go potty in the house(but I kennel/crate them when we leave and they don't go in their kennels/crates)...

So by potty trained I mean they know how to ask to go out...if I don't let them out they would choose to go in the house....Now Blitz is getting older (8 months) so he can probably hold it for a bit, but I had't tested how long yet...

I think it depends on the dog and their ability to focus and hold it as to when they actually are "potty trained." All of mine have been different. I didn't get Belle until she was 10 weeks and even though she had never been in a house until she came home with me, she was virtually potty trained within a week. The only problem I had with her is the way she would let me know she needed to go out was to go to the door and quietly sit and wait. She still does that, the only difference is she now has Ringo and Halo who she sends to let me know.

Halo was just an easy as Belle and was potty trained by about 9 weeks. She would also come and let me know when she needed to go out. Now if I wasn't fast enough, well that was my fault.

Ringo was my challenge. He just took longer to be able to control his bladder. Couple that with the fact that he just did not want to be bothered with stopping whatever he was doing to go pee and we had quite a few accidents. Once he got better control of his bladder, then the focus when he needed to go was not quite so time critical and the accidents went away.

Dieter is still a pee machine...even tho hes house broken he still pees a million times a day and it is not just to get outside..because he pees and then comes right back in
