The overweight threads made me think of this.

Last year I saw at a NAVHDA clinic a 100 pound working GSP. He was enormous, you could not see ribs but he was not really fat either. My guy is 23 inches and 55 pounds, he was easily 6-8 inches taller than mine. He was dragging his owner around trying to get to where ever he wanted to go. He was extremely strong too.

Bairas mother is huge. Not fat/weight wise, just height. Baira is 24 inches and her mother, who's name is Faty - LOL towers above her. She must be at leaste 30 inches. No idea how much she weighs.

My guy is 24" and 57#. Pip squeek BUT.......right smack dab in the middle of height standard. The NAVHDA dogs I see at training are along his same size. The conformation dogs are about 2-3" taller- bitches being bigger then my boy. One DK I saw was very tall and in incredible shape- muscled.

Thank you Navilla for compliment!! Yes!! Rocky weighed in March 23 2007 at 94 lbs. Last weigh in was 76.9#. We do have him weighing in at Vet every 2 months with his nail trim as we donot want him to sneak up with weight being a senior GSP (8 yrs old). Rocky is 27" at the withers, a tall GSP.

Marie and Rocky, a tall, high energy GSP

My boy Ruger is over 75lbs at 2 years of age, His father Keck vom Helmegrund is also between 75 and 80lbs, he is a DK from Germany and I have been told they are a little bigger over there. My boy is built like a racehorse, all muscle, no fat so I am not worried that he is overweight. I was told that in Germany they tend to be that large but in the USA the average 55 to 60 for males.

My boy, Ringo, is a big male for the US. He is at the very top of the standard in height and has not yet reached his full weight. Last time I weighed him he was around 65 lbs and I think he will add a little more muscle weight before he is done.

Belle dad was a big male though. He was the tallest male I had seen at about 27 inches at the withers. Her mother was a little bigger than average and Belle is the size of a medium size male. She is a bit smaller than my boy Ringo, but not by much.

Halo is a normal size female, maybe a little on the upper side of the standard. I always thought she looked big until I got Ringo. Now she looks tiny to me.

My last male Jake ran between 75 to 79 pounds and solid as a rock. When he passed he looked so so skinny, he made it down to around 63 pounds.

Murphy is rather large.  Especially when we compare him to the rest of his litter!  He's about 25 inches at the withers (which is give or take as the last time I measured him he wouldn't stand still!) and he is anywhere between 63-66 pounds.  He is by no means fat as we can see his last few ribs and on occasion his spine, but when compared to the 3-4 other pups out of his litter that we see regularly, well... he's GIGANTOR!  I'd say his sisters that he hunts with occasionally range between 22 and 23 inches and weigh around 40-45 pounds and the other male we've seen is about 24 inches and about 50 pounds.  The breeder has even exclaimed just how large Murphy is...

Of course he thinks he's a tiny and compact and can fit just about anywhere

My boy Tucker will be 3 this August and weighs 50lbs. He was the runt of the litter. The runts are my favorite. :) Briley is 10 months and is about 35 lbs and is also the runt plus the only female in her litter. My husband grew up with a GSP named Copper who is the real reason I have mine. He died a few months ago at 13 years old. He averaged 90 lbs. for the last few years but in his younger years topped out at 130lbs. and was a very active dog.

How about how small?
I felt so silly - there was this guy with 3 GSPs and I said "oooh, what cute puppies, how old are they?" - He said 3 and 4 years old! If they were bigger then a 5 month old I'd say they were big.
I'll spare you the rest of the details.

We had a male " The Gatsby" and he was great. More than 27" at the withers and a slim 85lbs with a rib or two showing. A beautiful dog out of the Minado line. My wife attempted to show him but when he reached full height the "wicket" ended his career.

I just bought an 18 month old male that is just under 23" and very square. He is going to look like a pup most of his life. I don't mention it to him though he thinks he's the biggest dog here.

gatsby - Although the standard says

Size--height of dogs, measured at the withers, 23 to 25 inches. Height of bitches, measured at the withers, 21 to 23 inches. Deviations of one inch above or below the described heights are to be severely penalized.

Size is not a disqualification per our standard and if a judge wicketed your dog, and disqualified it that was wrong. I agree that a 27" dog probably is not finishable, his height though should not have been a disqualification, but only a penalty.

I know at a show I was at recently the judge wanted to wicket one of the females and was not allowed too because of what our standard says. Instead the judge stood next to that female trying to figure out her height. The female happened to be on the big side of the standard, but was not outside the 21 to 23 inch range.

You are right he wasn't disqualified. His height was brought up at every event either in a complaint or a Oh my, he is tall! Is he over the breed standard? If he couldn't be finished, well...

My GSP, Seamus, is a freak. 31 inches at the withers, and his weight is now 86.5 lbs, he was up to 91lbs. He is 2 years old. (don't anyone worry, he is neutered) I posted pictures here in the past, just search my previous posts.

Oh yeah, we've had several that large come thru rescue, and on the flip side we've had them small as 30 lbs too. Go figure.
