Hey guys,

Its been a long haul with Joey since she broke her wrist around 3 months ago.  She ended up being in a splint for 2 whole months.   When she got it off she was right around 6 months, so we decided to get her spayed at the same time she got her splint off, because she would need to be on limited activity after her spay for 2 weeks or so.

To breifly summarize, having a GSP with a broken leg has to be one of the most depressing things on the planet.  Besides the constant nuisance of putting a cast protector on and multiple plastic bags everytime she went out to the potty, she had to have an e-collar on every night because she'd try to chew her splints off.  We went through about 6 splints in the two months.

Then there is the issue of having one of the most active dog breeds confined to pretty much no exercise.  I have to say, Joey did amazingly well with it.  She seemed to just get used to it.  She had her crazy zoomies from time to time but she really did well.  She knew we were doing the best for her.  When it was time for the crate at night, she'd stick her head out and press it through the e-collar as if to say, "I know I need this guys, even though I hate it."  We even began to question if GSP's needing so much excercise was actually......... necessary??!?!?!  I think it turned out it was just Joey'd body trying to heal her.

Anyway, she finally got it off, got spayed and we brought home our brand new baby.  Her right front leg was severely atrophied and below her wrist her paw kind of hung there limply.  The orthopedic doc swore to us the bone had healed and she would recover.  Well, we are three weeks later now and she is FINALLY doing great! She's been on her first two short walks in 3 months.

She has a slight limp now, her right paw sits flat compared to her left one where the toes are curled from the tendon on the back of the lef.  Her muscles and tendons are growing back she probably puts about 75% weight on the right leg now.  It's probably a little shorter, but should even out.  She RUNS around the backyard at full speed, making us cringe.  We took her back to the vet Saturday and specifically asked about rehab options.  He was slightly encouraging doing 6 weeks of underwater treadmill work, although he couldn't promise it would really do more good than regular walks/GSP spazzing outside.

Finally to my question, have any of you out there been through this and can give advice on whether the underwater treadmill would be a good idea in her situation?  It seems to me like 30 mins on the treadmill 2x a week won't really be doing more than regular outside crazy GSP activities (we are slowly working her back into leashed walks).  It's not really a money issue (although it is expensive), but it would be quite an inconvenience for us to get her to the place 2x a week.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to reading posts on her again! We've kind of shyed away from it since our pup was injured.

side note:  joey is now 7 months and only weighs 34 pounds!  she is tiny! she is 22-23 inches at her front shoulders, so i'm assuming at this point she's just going to 'fill out'? she seems so small.

Poor baby! I spent 10 weeks on crutches and 6 months in physical therapy & had to learn to walk all over again a few years ago, so I certainly know how poor Joey feels! I don't have any experience with dog injuries like that, but I have heard very good things about the water therapy. Good luck!

My oldest girl, Belle, tore her right front bicep tendon and had to have surgery when she was about Joey's age. She was confined for 5 weeks and like Joey she adapted. GSPs are so stoic about things. Anyway, when she could get back to normal activity the ortho vet recommended physical therapy for a few weeks to help build her back up and not risk re-injury. The water treadmill was a big part of that, but they also did laser therapy and massage as well. So, I did the therapy as I wanted to bring her along gradually and not risk re-injury or injury to the other shoulder (which turns out to be more common). Belle loved the therapy and especially the water treadmill and I did notice that her shoulder improved pretty quickly with the treatment. As you say it isn't cheap, but I felt it was worth it. I took her, if I remember right, a couple of times a week for about 3 weeks.

My boy Max had stifle surgery when he was 8 months old. What an awful depressing time that was. I actually sedated him quite a bit as he would get quite wild in his crate. He had to have a second surgery because some of the internal sutures busted. Not a fun time. Anyway, I went through a long rehab process with him. I am lucky to have access to a couple of wonderful rehab therapists who helped design a program for him. We did underwater treadmill for about 12 weeks. There are certain problems that benefit from UWT and others that do not. Find a good rehab person and set up a program as only they really have the knowledge to help you with this. I also would consult with an orthopedic person as well to get their advice. Good luck. It is a sloooowwwww process!

I know when I broke my foot, and my ankles (not all at the same time..yes folks I am a clutz).. my physical therapist spoke highly of swimming as a great way to get back into shape after I was out of my cast.

Something I am doing as a preventative and you may want to consider is start supplementing Joey now. I give Max Dasuquin, fish oil and flax seed. The omega 3's in the fish oil and flax are good for joints. The Dasuquin is good for the arthritis that will set in with dogs with these types of joint injuries. I am told by my orthopedic vet and rehab vet that it is better to start them on these now before they have problems then after, when they have problems. Something to think about. Best price for Dasuquin on Ebay- once you do a loading dose, 150 days of meds for $70. Not bad at all.
Max will most likely never be evn 95% sound but.....he can run and play and do all the things he loves!

hugs for Joey

Norm is now 5 months and I couldn't imagine his frustration at being confined for a long time.

I'm glad things are on the mend now, hopefully it gets easier and Joey comes out of it better cause she's learned to keep still while she has a lot of energy.

Underwater treadmill work is GREAT! I absolutely swear by it. And absolutely take your pup in for a consultation with an experienced dog rehab person. Get her on a regular program of exercises, stretching, treadmill, whatever is suggested.

I am so fortunate to live near a fabulous canine rehab place.
