Xara is having some trouble eating since her surgery. She starts to eat and then will gag and vomit half way through her meal. Sometimes she's only taken a couple bites and it comes right back up.  Other times she is eating, then steps back, and gags and gags and then lays down for a few minutes before going back to eat a few more bites.

She was eating very fast and I thought perhaps that was the problem, but she is even having problems when I hand feed bites to her slowly.

She's always been a fast eater and never had any problems prior to surgery so this is puzzling me. Did anyone else experience any eating issues after surgery with their dog?

I just posted this on you FB post, but is Xara still on any medication? If so, that may be upsetting her stomach.

only amoxicillin and a low dose of that, twice a day.

Since she is having problems when eating and drinking, I suspect something is really upsetting her tummy. It is likely the meds and she might even be allergic to them. I would stop them until you can call her vet in the morning. She doesn't have any other symptoms, no fever, diarrhea, etc, so I always look for what is different and what she may be taking that would upset her tummy.

nope, bowel movements are normal, no itchies, no swelling, just this eating/drinking issue.
I'll skip her pill tonight and see what the vet says. Probably have to take her in for them to check her over good.

She might actually eat in the morning if you skip the pill which would be a pretty good indicator too, but don't get upset if she is still having problems in the morning. It may take a little while for her to get straightened out. If it is the meds, be sure and have the vet mark it in her charts so they give her something different if she ever needs antibiotics again.

I'm sure they'd mark that she had issues with it if that's it, but I'll mention it too. But, thinking on it,,,,she was on amoxi before for her tooth she had pulled and didn't have any issues with it then....course doesn't mean she can't now.

I will be curious as to what the vet says. It may be a different dose. I may also be something else, but it won't hurt to skip a dose until you can talk to the vet. Poor baby! Hope she gets to feeling better.

speaking from experience.. an allergic reaction usually doesn't happen until the second time you take the medicines. Definitely check with the vet in the morning

talked to Andria, she said most likely it is her throat from being intubated. She said she's seen this happen in quite a few dogs but to call vet tomorrow and ask if they had any difficulty tubing her (if they'd even admit to it).
I'm going to soak her food tonight like I used to when she was little and see if that helps her out any in the morning eating it.

the moistened food did the trick. She ate this morning with no problems. The only time she had an issue was when I gave her a bowl of water, then she gagged a bit. Still calling the vet today though.

Good to hear. Hadn't thought about the intubation. I wonder if they had any problems with it. Let us know what the vet says. Poor baby has a sore throat.

Went to the vets and got her checked over. Nothing obviously wrong until the put pressure on her throat, then she winces and backs up. So yes, she's got a horrible sore throat from being intubated :(
Moistened food for the next few days, put her back on the antibiotic and bring her in in 10 days to get her stitches out.

what was so funny was that she was so excited when we got to the vets office! She was beside herself wiggling and dancing around, running to greet the staff.....until we went to go back in a room then it was OH NO!!! I AM NOT GOING IN THERE!!!!! LOL it finally dawned on her that the vet might actually have to touch her LOL

Did they have any explanation why she ended up with a sore throat from the tube? In all the years I have had dogs, I have never seen one with a sore throat from the tube and was just wondering. Maybe this is common and I have been lucky.

vet said it's not very common but it can happen *this was followed by a head shake and a : "but if something odd is going to happen, its' going to be with one of YOUR dogs!"*

Sigh! Guess you just have unique issues :)

Poor little Xara ... give her a gentle hug from me, Razzie and Bo. (I get to look forward to the same thing in 6 to 8 months after Raz's last litter ...)

I honestly had totally forgot how hard a spay is on the females. Sienna is almost 13 yrs old now and she was my last female until Xara. But Sienna had also been through open heart surgery at 16 weeks so that was still fresh in our minds 8 weeks later when she got spayed. The heart surgery was of course her worst one.
My males breeze through neuters like nothing happened to them at all. But that's also not as invasive of a surgery either.
I just hate, hate, hate seeing them hurt!!!!!!!

Poor baby.  Just got back on the list.  Hope she's feeling better.  Did the vet mention ice cubes.  The cold might feel good as well.  Might even add a little pedialyte to her water to keep her hydrated.  Won't hurt her.
