Well it's not been over a week since we brought Hogan home, how time flies!

He is pretty much potty trained, pretty much going straight to sleep when he goes in his crate at night (thank god!) and is SUCH a little handful!

He seems to be eating much better now I have switched him on to 3 feeds a day, which is great.

The only small issue we have, is in the car. Sometimes he is fine, goes straight to sleep. Other times he whines a little. Other times he SCREAMS his little head off.

Also, we sit down and eat together (humans) we put him in the crate. He sits there and BARKS and BARKS and BARKS, until he tires himself out and goes to sleep.

Should I punish this, or completely ignore it? I figured by punishing him it would give him attention, which is what he wants, and so completely ignore him until he goes quiet.

Here are a few pics:

Where has the puppy gone!

Oh hello up there

Naughty pup!

He loves his pheasant

Gimme that kong!

What a cute pup!!!!

Re barking in the crate - I would ignore it. Don't pay him any attention (and correcting him would be some form of attention). Also, when you do let him out of the crate, make sure he is quiet as you open the door. Sometimes they start back up with the whining being all excited. I always waited for Tessa to calm back down before I opened the door. This way they associate them being quiet with being released.

Another thing I do is when I come home, I do not immediately go to the crate and let her out. I put down my things, sometimes even start cooking me meal or sort through the mail, THEN go to greet her and let her out. She used to impatiently roll around in the crate like a maniac. The upstairs' neighbor's dogs, I swear, move their crate from the back to the front room when she comes home, howling. Tessa now is super quiet - as a matter of fact so quiet that sometimes I check to see if she's still alive.

To live without dogs would mean accepting a form of blindness. [Thomas McGuane]

Very cute pictures. When we crate Wyatt when we (humans) are eating we cover the crate with a towel and he settles real quick.

Anytime my dogs start barking in the crate.. we cover the crate, up to this point is has stopped the barking... Now sometimes I think they bark so they CAN be covered

Put him in the crate with a chew and cover it. If he is in a different room, you might want to turn on the TV or radio too. If he is in the same room he can hear you and he is probably reacting to that. So, if that is the case just ignore him. As others have said, do not let him out or talk to him unless he is quiet.

My GSP would whine once he gets in the crate.. my wife is a person who feels sorry quick.. but i tell her to ignore him and he'll stop.. but if we keep talking or let him know we can hear him, he'll keep going.

I wasnt happy one time she let him out bc he was whining. This doesnt award the behavior to let him out.

At one point for example, My wife cooked a meal, we ate, we didnt know it but my GSP was up on the counter eating what was still on the pan, I commanded him to kennel and he went, but then whined and whined and whined. my wife has a HUGE heart and let him out. I told her thats teaching him that he can whine and get his way. He cant. its tough when you got someone whos got a BIG heart and i do too but the dog has to learn.

id say put your pet's favorite toy in the crate and cover it. Most pups are used to cudding with their mother and their mother gives them comfort. My wife bought my dog a blanket he loves and she puts that in the crate and it helps alot.

Thanks! He has his favourite toy (a pheasant) and two tops in his crate with him - one which I rubbed over his littermates and one which I wore as an undertop and smells of me. When he is barking he doesn't appear to be worried or upset - it's more defiance - LET ME OUT NOW! I've just bought some Kong Stuffin and filled his Kong with that, he seems happier to stay in there now once he stops barking enough to find the kong!

Last night, for the first time, we put him in the crate to go night night, he lay straight down without whining or barking and watched us until we left to go upstairs.

We also have changed coming down in the night from 3am, to 4am - he copes fine and hasn't had an accident in the crate (yet!) at any time. Hopefully in time we can move it to 5am, then 6am which is the time we get up anyway.

Just wanted to share a cuuuuute pic with you, Toni & Hogan having a snooze:

He has his puppy party tonight (not sure if you guys in the U.S do puppy parties?) so we are are looking forward to that.

A little video... sorry this might be a bit sad, but a friend asked me to do a little video to show how he is good being handled etc (she works in a vets and was complaining about unruly puppies!).... thought I would share

Sleepy puppy!

Still looking gorgeous! I used Kongs a lot with my two when they started to be left alone. Peanut butter is a whole lot cheaper than Kong stuffing by the way (especially when combined with a treat firmly wedged in the hole at the bottom). They don't grow out of wanting to fall asleep on a lap! Try having two fully grown beasts both desperate for lap fuss. We had another good run about in the surprise heavy snow yesterday and more forecast this week (West Yorkshire).

So cute! I've never heard about a puppy party, that sounds like fun!

My 7 year old GSP still whines in the car, but it is a high-pitched excited whine, not an unhappy whine. I usually ignore him & he stops after a bit... unless we turn onto the road that leads to the lake & then he starts to screech & fling himself around in joy. :)

Bo is the exact same way when we go to the dog park. When we go to the forest (he knows the difference between the two because of the way we leave our street) he points all the way up the hill (less than 5 min).

Puppy parties are fun! They are held at the vets after hours usually. All puppies who have been in recently for vaccinations are invited and have a blast with each other. The vet and vet nurse talk about feeding, walking, grooming, heath check ups etc. and the puppies usually get a party bag with a toy and some treats. Typically, my boy dog was the only one still awake (out of about ten puppies) and wanting to play when the other puppies were napping during the vet talk. I often wonder about how the novice dog owners who had taken on TWO boxer puppies are getting on! They looked like a handful.

Sounds a little like puppy k here. Thankfully there was another GSP puppy in Bo's class, so we didn't look like we had the most energetic dog out there. At play time, Bo and Molly used to run around like crazy trying to knock down the other dogs (or as my husband said, "Bowling pins meet bowling balls.") :) Sigh -- I miss puppy-hood (a little -- I'm not crazy, yet :D)

The puppy party at the vets sounds like a really good idea. I think I will suggest it to my vet the next time I am in for something. We get a little bit of that when we take our puppy in for the first checkup, but it would be so much fun to do it in a group. And a great opportunity to educate dog owners.
