My 6 month old "Birdie" who gets to spend hours everyday in the Vermont snowy woods is training at an excellent rate and is a joy. We burn wood regularly, so there is always crumbs of bark being dropped near the wood stove. Birdie loves to gnaw on these as well as chewing and ingesting many kinds of woody matter while out and about. She is healthy and well fed and has many chew toys to work her jaws on and she uses all types from nyla bone, to rope, to kongs and so forth. She has no regularity problems.

Is this normal? Should I be curbing this habit?

Johnnie

Both of mine chew on the wood by our burner too and outside and where ever else they can find it....I try to tell them no but it seems to be a never ending case....I am sure they have gotten slivers stuck and that has cause some of their gagging at times, but there is no way I can keep every stick in the yard away from them, I have even seen them take the bark right off the tree!

Mine as well. Regularly raid the wood pile, have even vomited up small pieces of bark. My lab used to eat it too.
Last week they demolished the outside wood pile, took the whole thing down for a mouse.......in all of 5 minutes.

Sticks, twigs & bark are a new food group on the food pyramid. It is also a reversable food group as it can come back out either end.

Ringo also loves to chew on sticks. He will even tear branches off of bushes.

Buddy also always chew on a stick when were outside, he got a few sticks I keep out there for him, I always see him letting it drop out of his mouth, sure he probably swallows some of it.

Finding twigs for Bo is a game with him and my niece when we go for walks in the woods. Inevitably, every now and again, we get to see them twice

just consider it a way they are increasing their fiber intake. I got Wachter to stop chewing on so many sticks when I started introducing "chewies" into his life.. he gets heavy meat bones, and hard chew toys. But at that age even my shih-tzus would chew on wood, so it seems to be a normal thing for dogs period.. no matter the breed.

I was just glad when Murf stopped eating rocks ;)

I'd say totally normal behavior... GSPs must have a craving for wood flavored fare. I'm constantly taking stuff out of Murphy's mouth...when I can catch him that is. LOL
