Xara's spay went well. She's in recovery as I type and I can pick her up after 7:30 this evening. She'll come home with some tramadol pain killers to help keep her drowsy for a few days, which might be a good thing!!!

I got there this morning and they gave me the estimate for the spay......$620.   Uh, I about had heart failure! I haven't had a female dog spayed since Sienna was a puppy almost 13 yrs ago, but OMG! I was totally unprepared for that type of bill for a simple spay. I questioned the charges and asked that the vet herself call me at work today to discuss them.

I get a call about 3 hrs later apologizing profusely, seems they gave me the wrong estimate for Xara's weight. She is 36 lbs, not 50! (pet store scales had her at mid 40 something, evidently it's not right!) So the price went down considerably thank goodness. Still high if you ask me, but MUCH better than $620.00!  PLUS, they threw in free microchipping for the heart failure episode they caused me.

So she's all good, spayed and chipped and in a week or so ready to play in the snow again! (Speaking of which , we are going to get slammed with another foot or more this weekend! We are never going to get out of our houses soon!)

Glad it went well even with the added weight expense!

Why the cone?

Prayers are with Xara for fast healing!! Hope not too much snow falls for Xara to truck through!! May have to shovel her a little path with a circle at the end for potty time. We got Snickers spayed in 1993. Cost back then,$74.(:

Oh the cone head I feel for her. I use the t-shirt trick to keep them away from licking. I use a big t-shirt and knot it on the back. It works great and does not rub against the surgery site. I never laughed so hard when we picked up our dogs and they tell you "Keep them quiet for 2 weeks" I was lucky to get 2 days before they were ready to go man go. Good Luck.

Poor Xara, I am glad she is home!

That spay price seems really high! I'm not sure if my vet charges for extra pounds, but Layla was 42 pounds when I got her spayed & it was about $250, which included the overnight stay to make sure she kept quiet (my vet is very familiar with the near-impossibility of keeping GSPs quiet!).

The most painful thing about Tessa's spay was the price tag - over $ 400! And did not have post-op pain meds nor a cone! Like you, I remember how cheap spays were back when. And in the light of so many unwanted puppies, I think spays should be a little less expensive!

Have you tried taking the cone off? Does she really bother the incision? I was fearing the worst with Tessa and would have gone back and bought one, but she not once licked or even looked at her incision.

10 days in the crate was rough for me to see but even that she took much better than I thought (had to keep her in the crate as she is an avid jumper - always on two legs - so I didn't want to take a chance to have the incision redone for another $ 400!). Of course, my previous dog had two torn ACL and had to be kept confined for 8 weeks x 2 which was HELL so 10 days seemed like nothing, and I got a lot of my stuff done :)

Good luck! How is she doing today?

I didn't get the cone when I had Belle spayed either and she never bothered the incision. I was planning on using the tshirt if she did as it is much more comfortable for them and it doesn't knock over things or the wall. Plus they wanted to charge me extra for the cone. I don't remember how much I paid for Belle's spay.

Bless her. Holly was dopey until 4am after her spaying then all of a sudden the drugs wore off! She wore a cone until the stitches were out, but had to have antibiotics because they got a little infected. Be careful of her getting her belly wet in the snow. I had to tell the vet a little fib when she asked if we were carrying her up and down stairs! Keeping her inactive will be the biggest challenge. I was amazed at the lack of scar after the stitches came out.

Get well soon Xara

Poor sad Xara! We've never been through a spay or the recovery as we've always had male dogs... and they seem to handle neuters so much better. Not quite as invasive I guess...
I can say that Murf never once bothered his incision and we didn't need the cone (of course it has come in handy for other calamities in his life;) )
Good luck keeping her quiet as I can tell she's your little spitfire!
Hope she's feeling better today:)

Well I had to get rid of that stupid cone! She was miserable with it on, so I got one of Dave's shirts and put it on her and tied it on the back good so she can't get to the stitches. She hasnt' even thought about getting to them, and they are rather high on her belly, not sure she could get to them? I think the t-shirt will work, at least until they get dry and start to itch, then she might have to go back to the cone. She's much happier being able to curl into a ball again to sleep, her favorite position. I've also made sure she has a couple of her favorite chew toys in there to chew on to keep her mind off her belly.
She's doing well today. I had her out a bit to walk around and stretch, until she decided to jump on the couch YIKES! so back in her cage she went. No jumping! She's so so so good about letting me carry her down the steps and when she comes in I tell her to wait, she stops at the bottom of the steps and waits for me to pick her up and carry her back up again. Such a good girl :)
I'll have to get pictures later of her fancy new clothes LOL

The challenge will be in a few days when she will feel GREAT but the incision has not healed yet. I had Tessa on a leash inside when she wasn't in her crate :)

Glad Xara's doing okay.  My 9.5 month old recently got a cone too, as she lacerated her chest on Super Bowl Sunday, during a run.  She got 15 stitches with a drain tube. The cone they sold me ($26) is sort of nice because it can flare backwards as well.  I kept it on for the first day or two, but with mine hardly licking, I took it off soon after.  Wish I'd thought of the t-shirt idea though.

My pic is while my pup is still drugged up too and out of sorts.
