Ok im talking people with multiple dogs. I have been reading a little bit about pack order and want to start doing little things like greeting them, feeding them in order. The thing is, how do you know the order. Here is my situation. We have a 2.5 year old mix (Fin) and we had him for about two years before we got Dieter.Fin has very "soft nerves"(iv herd a few people use that term..im not sure if it is correct) he only required very little correction, would never lean or bump into you and will not even go through a door if any part of his body is going to bump it. He learned all the house rules and is aloud complete freedom in the house. Although he is a super fast sprinter (Dieter cannot catch him and it drives him crazy) he is fine laying on the couch all day, he is great with kids. Im pretty sure you can do anything to him with out getting an agressive reaction. Ok..so my questions are..should the older always be higher in the pack? he canot seem to get it through Dieters head that he is alpha. He corrects him all the time but 99% of the time it doesnt even phase Dieter . So can a gentle dog be alpha over a "Bulldozer" dog or will Dieter aventually take over. Is there anything i can do or should i just leave them alone when it comes to this?

thanks for anyones opinions

I have 4 dogs: 2 hounds & 2 pointers. When we bring a new dog in they are always feed last. I am not sure if this is correct but it works in my household. My oldest is a Basset Hound and she is my alpha - she is what you call a gentle dog but when she speaks the other dogs listen. I think some can be age & personality of the dog.

We've always considered the dog that came into the family first as the 1st in the pack.  Penny (the 2nd dog) always tries to push ahead, but I make her sit and wait.  I always give Cooper his treats first and take his leash off first when we come home from walks or if I let them run off lead. I try to always make him the priority. If they didn't free feed, I would put Coopers food down first.  At night time, I let Cooper on the bed first. If Penny is already on the bed, I make her get off and let Cooper up, then Penny can get back up.

First, you are alpha. You control the food. You control the play. You dole out the discipline. You get the picture. So, what you are actually talking about is the dog alpha. With my gang, my oldest bitch, Belle, is the leader. She is a quiet leader and is the softest dog I have. So to answer your question, yes, a soft dog can be the dog alpha. My second bitch, Halo is #2 in the pack, and then Ringo is #3. I let the dogs settle who is where in the pack, but in my packs case it also corresponds to the order I got them in and their age. No one challenges Belle as the leader and I enforce her leadership. She is the smartest and most calm of my three as well.

Yes i know i am alpha...and i do treat Fin as alpha dog but he just doest seem to be able to correct Dieter. Also Dieter is much stronger/taller and weighs about 15 pounds more. Fin does take on the alpha dog role and will correct him when ever he feels he is doing something wrong..but it just seems to have no effect on Dieter

Razzie walked in and took over dog alpha. Which is really funny since she half Bo's weight and size.

It was perfect timing since she had just had a litter and BO was still being a bratty adolescent. She has ALMOST got that sorted out :D He still tries to be a big, brave dog and she constantly reminds him that he is the world's biggest princess...

However, I always give treats to Bo first since he was first in the house. Razzie has enough confidence for 10 dogs, so I try to bolster Bo's.

Don't know if this is the recommended way to operate, but it works in my house :)

Altho your dog may be soft it doesn't necessarily mean soft 'nerve'.
The way we do it in our home is we let the dogs decide how the pecking order goes. We really don't care how it works out as long as there is peace.
I feed the dogs in no particular order, but they eat at the same time. we have a controlled feeding. The dogs must sit in their place,I get the food ready and they wait until I release one at a time. Some days I release one dog first other days I release the other. As leader,I decide who eats, where they eat and when.

But, being pack leader in the house does not always mean pack leader outside the home. That's a whole other aspect of leadership.
