At 24 inches I think Baira is a little tall for a bitch, right? She could be a little taller actually as she doesn't stand still long enough to measure her and when I approach with a tape measure she cowers like it's going to eat her so, she's 24 inches minimum. Her mum was a BIG dog. She's nearly 9 months old, how much more growing is she likely to do?
Her weight is just over 51lbs which is OK, right? I struggle to keep weight on her, is that normal? I have it stabilised now with more than recommended amount of food and extra fresh cooked meat, rice, pasta etc at most meal times. She's not thin, I can just about see 2 ribs.

You are doing great. Sounds like she is in tip top shape. If you are measuring with a tape measure, she may actually be a tad shorther as it is very hard to be exact with a tape measure. The American standard says 21 to 23 inches for bitches/ The International Standard (FCI) says 22.8 to 24.8 inches. My guess is she is just on the high end of the standard. Her weight is about right for her height. My girl, Halo, is very close to the size of your girl and weighs 40 to 51 lbs.
At 9 months old I would suspect she will not get in taller or heavier, but will develop more muscle. |

Koda is almost 9 months and on the smaller size. I also have a difficult time measuring her height, but last I checked she's 22" and 37 pounds. I expect her to put on some muscle mass as she gets older, but I'm not sure how heavy she'll get. |

| My boy is 24" and 57#. At 55.5# you could see 3 ribs and hips. 57# is perfect. HIs littermate is 22" and 44#. |

Hi All,
I am new to the forum, but I really like reading all the important info here. I have a 4 month-old puppy that weighs 20 pounds. After reading other posts I am pretty convinced that he is not big enough for his age. He has been on Innova for puppies since he came to us at the age of 6 weeks. He sometimes skips his meals but it's not a common occurrence. His parents seemed on a bigger side so I wonder why my puppy is not growing as much as expected. I should add that he has been checked for worms and other parasites. He is active, happy, and otherwise looks very healthy. Can someone tell me what's going on? Thanks in advance!!! |

| aniaread - What does your vet say? If your pup is happy and healthy otherwise, and your vet thinks he is fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Shorthairs vary in size and a bigger mom and dad can have pups that are on the smaller side of the standard. In my boys litter he ended up on the upper end of the standard for males and one of his sisters was on the lower end of the standard for females. So you can't necessarily judge my the parents. |

Dear Belle,
Than you so much for your response! The vet didn't seem to be concerned about his weight at all. The puppy is healthy and full of energy (although he sleeps a lot too), so we don't think there is anything wrong with him per se. I think it was just me hoping for a big dog. Also, in comparison with other pointers he seems awfully petite. We love him the way he is and are so grateful for such a good dog. But do you think he may still catch up or he will remain rather small? Thanks again. |

Joey is small too she is 34 pounds at 7 months and i think she was around 20 at 4 months. she seems really small too. For a male I guess its a little small but.. people come in all shapes and sizes and pups to some degree as well, thats what our vet said. joey seems similar to the size of Koda, above. |

| UPDATE Wyatt is now 4.5 months. Today we went to the vet and he is 34.5lbs.The vet says all is good! His gas has not gotten any better on Wellness large breed puppy, so I think we are going to try yet another food! |

I find that most puppies have gas no matter what you feed them. The majic age is somewhere around 1 1/2 before they stop clearing a room.

| He will probably stay on the small side for the males, but he still has some growing to do as the males do not mature as fast as the females. Typically they reach their max height around a year and after that they continue to put on muscle for at least another year or two. I do not know if you have neutered you male, but that can affect his growth if neutered prior to reaching his sexual maturity which is somewhere between a year to 2 years. |

| The breed standard says that females should be between 45 and 60 pounds. Putting on muscle should add weight, but if they don't reach 45 pounds is that considered a fault/penalty/disqualification in a show ring? |

| Height and weight are not a disqualification in the AKC. In fact, judges can not even request that the dogs be wicketed (height measured) or weighed. Height and weight can, however, keep a dog from getting put up in the breed ring. |

No, we haven't neutered him yet. The vet recommended doing it at 6 months of age. But after reading a number of peer-reviewed studies we have decided not to neuter him till he is at least a year old. I'm not a fan of castration in general, but I guess it is easier to board the dog etc. Thank you for your response. What are your thoughts on neutering? How early would you do it? |

Just a caution on measuring. Very often, I see folks measuring a dog from the ground up to the base of the neck, so they seem TALL. A dog's height is measured from the ground to its shoulder blades. You can feel where the shoulder blades meet on the back of the dog. Use two yardsticks or similar, if you do not have access to a wicket. Lay one accross the shoulders and stand the other on the ground. Or use a piece of stiff cardboard or a book and the yardstick for the measuring. The height is where the two meet. It will be inexact, but better than a tape measure.
It is helpful to have another person gently hold the dog, with head relaxed, neither down nor up.
All my dogs are measured for agility and position of the head has a HUGE impact on the height measured. Judges are careful not to let the dogs be stacked and on their toes, nor slumped and head hanging. Still, it is hard! Most recently, my petite little Soleil was measured by one agility judge at 21 3/4" and by the 2nd at 21". That's a big difference! BTW, she weighs 50 lbs, mostly bulging thigh muscles!  |
