Well we are home with the Hogan pup

We picked him up around 10, and it took just over 3 hours to get home. Most of the time he was fine, slept a lot of the way, but started whining about 10 minutes from home - not a scared whine, but I think a rebellious "I want to explore the car" whine as he was scrabbling to climb out of my arms

As soon as he came in he peed on the floor but we did manage to have a poo outside!

Later in the afternoon we went out in the car again, as we had to check on the horses. On the way, he started scrabbling again (Toni was holding him) and whining when she wouldn't let him go. She tried putting him in the footwell which resulted in him whining louder and louder until he was screaming. She didn't want to pick him up again while he was doing that, so waited until he was silent for a second before scooping him up.

I wonder whether as he has travelled over 3 hours in the car today whether it is all too much, or whether he has a problem with the car? The long term "travel" plan is for him to be clipped on to a car harness to the seat belt so I want to make sure I nip any problems in the bud. What do you guys advise? Wait and see how it goes? When he is whining what should we do? I didn't want to punish him because it's a lot for him to take in today, it's just it's not a frightened whine, it's a rebellious "i can't have my own way" whine...

The other question, he doesn't seem to give me ANY notice when he's going to pee! Just squats and then he's done! Each time he's done it i've taken him out to the garden, but by then it's too late and he doesn't need to go anymore! I also take him out regularly to pee or poo but he doesn't go... any tips on encouraging him?

He's asleep in his crate right now, he fell asleep on Toni's sons lap so we carried him in there to get him used to it. The door is open, I have a feeling we may have a screamer on our hands tonight, he's not one to hold back on letting his feelings be known!

Anyway, thanks for any advice that you can give me, and enjoy the following pics.... the rest are on facebook (for those I am friends with)...

I would suspect your puppy was anxious due to having to take a pee in the car. Most of them will pee every 2 hours if you take them out. Little physical control of the bladder at that age. Nice little puppy, looks just like mine with a tail.

I think after he is used to you and the car he will settle down in there.

As for the potty training....don't bring him inside till he has gone outside...may be hard and might take a long time, but you gotta do it....then praise him like crazy when he does go outside!

How long do I wait, when it's dark, freezing cold and he starts shaking, even when he's wearing his little coat!

I got so excited cus he peed in the garden earlier, now he just went straight in his crate and peed on his bed!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought they weren't supposed to pee in their sleepy place... I guess he doesn't think of it as his bed yet!

Oh! He is CUTE!

Be patient -- it's only day one. I wouldn't judge behaviour today. It will get better. Week one there will probably be a few accidents as he's still little and learning.

Keep him taking him outside regularly. If he pees or poops, give him LOTS of praise and a treat. Eventually, he will get the idea, and you can wean him off the treats.

AHHHH look at those feet and those ears!!!! he has a LOT of growing to do!!

I was always taught that the standard rule of thumb was 5 minutes after drinking they go outside for 10.. then inside for 5 outside for 10 or until they pee... (that is why it stinks to have a winter puppy). If they don't go potty the after the first trip outside then they get kenneled. When they go pee.. they get treats and get to roam free.

Only give him water at designated times. I would say about 30 minutes after drinking he will need to pee. Prob 5 minutes or less he should go pee. Take him to the same location always also.

As for the pee in his bed, clean it with vinegar as it will eliminate the proteins in the pee that will cause him to pee there again. But again every 2 hours i would take him out....he may not pee. But he will catch on in no time.

We've now had two poo's in the garden which is great, clever puppy! The last pee in the house I caught mid flow, took him to the garden and he finished his business there, which was great!

Thanks for all the info guys, keep it coming!

He's going on monday morning for his first jab, and a check up, so fingers crossed all will be ok. We are about to put him "to bed" for the night, so here's hoping he settles ok!

We had the same bathroom problems with our pup. It took Chessie till about a week ago to give us a sign.

Just be patient, and take him out to the same spot that he pooped the first time. We took her to the same spot every time, and if she wouldnt go, we would walk her around that area and praise her when she would go. With her its about 25 min after she eats that she has to pee. She only has to poo if she didnt shortly before she ate. Another thing is to have the feedings on a schedule. We also got her when it was really cold and had the first snow, just be patient.

With the first night schedule, she wined once before going to bed, she wined twice during the night and we had gotten up to let her out to use the bathroom and she used the wee wee pad, but still went outside. For the first couple of nights we took her out when she wined, but only after she stopped did we go in there to get her. Then the next few days we changed it to a schedule, to where we would go let her out at like 1,3,6 no matter if she was asleep or not. Then after a few days we then changed it to 2,4,6. And then we went to 3 and 6 after a few more days. Just this week we started letting her go through the night, and let her out when we get up at 6:30. We got her when she was almost 8 weeks, she is now 13 weeks.

I know I wrote alot, but I know when we got our pup home, we where looking up everything that we could. Let me know if you have anymore questions

Very cute little boy.  He looks like he is going to be a handful.  As for the car, give him a chance to get used to everything.  Ringo's first ride home was 4 hours and he was restless and cried for the first hour or so until I found out he liked audio books.  Would calm him right down.  Now he is a great rider.  He gets in the car and crashes (actually my entire gang will crash in the car).  They all love to go too.  Just take him every chance you get.  I start mine out in the back seat as I don't allow them in the front seat of the car.  They learn from the get go that they have to ride in the back.  I take them everywhere when they are little and make sure that we have fun when we get to our destination so they associate good things happen when I go in the car.  It doesn't take long.

As for the peeing, just remember he is a baby and has to go out often.  A good rule of thumb is every hour, after eating, after a nap, or after playing he goes outside.  Watch for sniffing around and looking for a place to pee and put him out.  Don't fuss if he has an accident.  If you catch him in the act do exactly what you did, scoop him up and put him out.  Praise when he pees outside.  It won't take him long, but expect some accidents. Be sure you clean up anywhere he pees with something that kills the smell or he will go back to the same spot and pee there again.

He's gorgeous and I love his name. Can only offer the same advise as everyone else with regards to the house training. Give him time

One thing I did with Baira though was to tell her to "do a wee wee". When she was little I took her outside and kept saying it until she did one and then praised her for doing it. She will now wee on command. Even if she doesn't need to go she'll squat and squeeze a drop out.

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming!

Well we survived the first night... just!

I put him to bed at 12pm, and went to bed myself. I had sworn to myself I would not go to him when he cried - he SCREAMED for half an hour, screaming, crying and howling - it was torture!

I had decided I would go down at 3am, and 6am. At 3am I went down, put his little coat on, took him straight out with no fussing into the garden. He peed straight away I then put him bacl in the crate and went back to bed. He cried for another half hour and went quiet again.

I went down at 6am and did the same, he peed straight away again. Each time he doesit I give him lots and lots of praise and a treat.

He then came back in, but after 5 minutes he started sniffing around, especially by the front door I quickly took him out and he went outside So no accidents in the crate.

Toni then took over I went upstairs for some more sleep, and since then he's been for pee/poo in the garden twice, with no accidents in the house.

You're right - it seems to be about 30 mins after a meal.

We are going out in the car again today - I might get one of the kids to hold him in the back as that is where he is going to be travelling eventually, with a harness on.

Also, he seems to get the hiccups an awful lot, is this normal? (He's had them about 5 times already!)

When would it be ok to wash him? I have puppy shampoo ready. I don't want to overface him.

Any more info would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I'm sooo paranoid about him, all I can say it thank goodness I'm NOT going to having kids

One more question - I think he may be what you guys refer to as a "power chewer"

I gave him a puppy nylabone yesterday, in 10 minutes he had chewed the end off. It says that he can pass through parts of the bone which are the size of a grain of rice - but he had chewed big chunks off which I had to retrieve from his mouth. I have taken the bone from him and replaced with a tough nylon toy - I am worried though, will the replacement be too rough for his teeth? I am also very paranoid about him swallowing parts of nylon/edge of carpet/parts of toy and then getting an impaction.

Thanks!

it sounds like you are finding him a good rhythm for going outside. it is hard in the winter, but mine has gotten good now about going right away. at first he would walk around not do anything and then get cold...but now I take him out to the magic spot and he goes right away! We have had him for a week now and it is getting better...a few accidents here or there but getting so much better....I can't wait for warm weather it will be so much easier when the dogs can stay outside and play forever then come in for nap and then back out again!

Congratulations, he looks gorgeous. Love the flying ears shot. Don't worry about the crying in the car at this age. I had a 3 1/2 hr trip when i brought rupert home, and he cried the whole time he wasn't sleeping, and that was a LOT. He was whiny in the car for about the first 2-3 weeks, then settled down. I just ignored him. He's great now, loves it in the car and just looks out the window or sleeps.

As for the toilet training, i'll be in your position next weekend, we got our current pup last summer and it was so nice to leave the door open and he caught on reallly quickly. Not looking forward to it so much in the winter. But it'll happen, at least its just wee accidents! Ours was 5 months before he was 100%accident free in the house, and not needing to be let out every hour or so.

The hiccups is totally normal, and really cute isn't it. Can't help you on the when to bath, as we've still not needed to bath ours yet. But i'd prob take things slowly and let him get used to being without mum and settle in.

All the best, more pics please!!

Hiccups and lot's of them are normal for pups. As kids when we got the hiccups mom used to tell us we were growing. I think that is true with dogs too. Every time I looked at Ringo he had the hiccups. He also had big ears and feet. He eventually grew into the feet and ears getting hiccups regularly until he was about 5 or 6 months old. He actually didn't finish growing height wise until he was about a year. He is still adding muscle and he is 1 year and 8 months now. His chest is just now starting to really develop. Some dogs develop sooner than that, but gives you an idea of what to expect.

As for the car, unless you want someone holding him all the time going forward, I would forgo having someone hold him now. Do you have a crate you could put him in the car. Or go ahead and get him used to the seat belt thing you plan to use. Put him in the seat and buckle him in and give him treats and praise. You don't have to go anywhere at first. Just get him liking getting in the seat with the buckle.

As for things to chew on I prefer real bones or deer antlers. Deer antlers are the best as they don't splinter and it takes a power chewer a very long time to chew them down. My boy just got his first one down to a size were I had to throw it away and he got it when he was about 4 months and is now 1.8 years. Anything nylon or plastic he would destroy in minutes. Stuffed toys don't last either as they squeaker gets removed and then the stuffing. What ever is left becomes a tug toy that gets pulled into pieces. For a puppy you could take a real bone and stuff it with peanut butter or canned dog food and freeze it. It would keep him busy for a long time. When he falls asleep, just pick it up and put it back in the freezer. I haven't tried it, but I bet you could make mush out of his puppy kibble and stuff it with that too.

I would also recommend you start trimming or grinding his toenails and messing with his feet now. Even if they don't need trimming get of the trimmers and pretend. I personally prefer grinding the toenails as it doesn't seem to bother them as bad and it is fast and harder to get into the quick. I start all of mine this way and now I get the grinder out and they literally line up and wait their turn. They also get a yummy treat when everyone is done.

As for the bath, if he smells really bad go ahead and clean him up. Just remember he is a baby. Get the bathroom really warm, use a puppy shampoo. Bathe him and then dry him really good. You can probably get him dry with just towels and someone holding a dryer so it blows gently on him. Just make sure he doesn't get chilled. And I would also keep him is for a while after the bath so make sure he potties before you bathe him.

Love the pictures. As for being lap dogs, mine still think they are supposed to be in my lap. Sometimes all at once and I have 3 shorthairs. My boy is the biggest snuggler of the bunch. He loves a good snuggle in the morning before I get up and he loves to get in my lap to watch TV in the evenings. He is now about 65 lbs.

Enjoy your pup and keep the pictures coming.

More pics? Well you asked for it

He has been great today. We've had a few wee accidents, but each time I have picked him up to stop him mid flow, then scooted him to the garden and he has finished his business outside.

He has also started moving in the general area of the door when he needs to go, so that's great!

We went to my parents for sunday lunch. I thought it was going to be a nightmare - but I put his bed behind mine and Toni's chairs, in the sun, and he slept their (looking very very cute) while we were eating! I was so proud of my little boy!

He is currently fast asleep curled up on his bed, in front of the hearth. We have a woodburner/multifuel stove (in fact it's our only source of heat apart from oil filled radiators and I think he likes the heat. Don't worry I'm very careful he won't get too hot, we also have to be careful, he seems very interested in the log basket and coal pot

He's becoming a lot braver, today we did some hoovering and he stood by Henry the vacuum sniffing him! We've also had the hairdryer on, and the kids have been on the Wii shouting and yelling, he's coped very well with that too - luckily he was well socialised at the breeders as she had 5 year old twins
