Sounds like the coyotes are a problem in quite a few areas. Very scary to hear that the dog barking may actually lure them closer! Keeping Koa in at night may be our best option - even though we're well-fenced, I need to discourage the outdoor barking habit.

I believe shooting the coyotes is illegal within our city limits, unfortunately. I had a scary incident last year where Koa got into a tussle with two coyotes on our morning hike (on a well-traveled path with homes in sight). I was scared out of my mind, unarmed (I grew up in Chicago for pete's sake) and had no idea what to do. We got very lucky - I yelled my head off and the coyotes backed off. Koa outran the coyote she tussled with - escaping with one puncture in her haunch. The whole thing makes me pretty reticent to take her out anywhere remote or early/late in the day, which is such a shame.
