We live in the mountains, where the coyotes still roam in packs - even through the neighborhood. Lately they've been doing that high-pitched yippy howl thing at all hours of the night, and my GSP goes NUTS. She starts barking in her room, then runs out the dog door to bark ferociousy in the yard at them. Basiclly, every time a faint coyote wailing can be heard, my dog wakes up the house and the neighbors. Any suggestions on how to break this behavior or otherwise "desensitize" her to this particular sound?

I was thinking of a white-noise machine of some kind, but this strikes me as kind of high-maintenance. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thats a tough one, I have an air cleaner on high when we go to sleep, just enough to drown outside noices, car doors, and the cat creeping through the room, that works for us. Be careful so your GSP doesn't become coyote dinner.

I would also close the dog door at night and make her stay inside.

Koda perked up and starting barking (very rare) when raccoons were going through our recycling. I think she's starting to become a better guard dog, but I told her "No barking" and told her to lay back down on the bed. I would try to interrupt the behavior then get her to focus on doing something else (bone to chew on?). I know it's a pain when it's in the middle of the night.

Our neighbor dog, on the other hand, will have a barking contest with the coyotes, which doesn't happen very often thank goodness. They finally got a bark collar because the dog would bark all day and night at anything and everything. I don't think that would help in this situation.

To add to what Belle said, and you might already know this by living near coyotes. I heard that the yotes will get accustomed to the barking and will remember that, then in hard times may come that way looking for a meal.

I go out and shoot in the air with a 22 gun.  Takes care of it for awhile..Course, you cannot have anything around you.

Yeah -- I used to keep a 5' long 1 1/4" PVC pipe from one of my agility jumps by the outside fence -- I've got a coyote bitch that would come up about 50' from the fence and I'd scare her away beating on the fence with the pipe -- but last summer she started getting very bold and would stand out there an growl at ME! Not sure if she had pups she was protectiing, or . . . I'm on 5 acre lots on horse property, but am hesitant to shoot as the houses across the road are too close -- so I just hope we don't have this form into an incident. I've been tempted to pull out the 12 gague. Our pack of GSPs go out and raise hell too -- we've learned to live with it, and the coyotes do not seem interested in challenging 4-5 dogs. But we keep a close eye on it.

I would definitely keep her inside at night. Coyotes can actually be attracted to the barking of dogs, they will come around at night when they hear the hounds baying a coon when the guys run them, so do be careful. I know a guy who runs them as a profession & he will verify this.
I know of several dogs that have gotten into fights with them and one was IN a fenced yard, yote jumped the fence, it was my old boy Bucks sister, took her ear half off. (Matt, your girls mother Fever)
Incidents aren't common, but do happen. My friend John had a dog fight with one last year when he was running dogs in the evening at a friends property, luckily the dog was not injured. He heard the fight & when he got to them, the yote took off, to fast to get a shot. (he had a shotgun with him) It was a quick fight, he got there pretty fast on the quad. It was spring & we believe it was a male being territorial.

Why don't you just shoot them?

We thinned out the packs by us and on our friends preserve. They kill the fawns. Last season and this season there were one too many doe that were harvested who had given birth but not nursed.

Boy would I love to shoot the coyotes that roam our neighborhood, but I can't because it is illegal in the city limits.

I've also heard that they will send the bitch in heat to lure the males dogs away.  Then go for the attack.  I think they've moved away from my place because Penny is back to normal when we go outside.

Theyre too smart. Im always worried with our dogs...Maddy is weak and old, mylee is 12 pounds, my sisters pups are 6 pounds each, and Dax is still a pup. We don't see them or hear them too often near where I am, although theres quite a few only a few miles from us. We hear em all the time at my buddies house. They're around though. With the little dogs I actually wouldnt mind if Dax would bark at/try to intimidate coyotes when he gets bigger....adds a little security for the little dogs. Then again we've yet to hear them at the house so far....

Short of hunting them you could trap them. I would imagine at pop from a blank gun, cap gun or even yelling "Shut the **ck up you mother ****ers" out the back door will usually run them off. Avid predator hunters in my area (much better at it than i) tell me they run about a 15 mile area on 5-7 day cycles.

We have similar problems with our other dog, and I'm sure we will when I get my GSP too. There is a puppy mill not too far from our house, and you can hear the dogs there barking all day and all night. They will stop for awhile, and then start again and that really sets him off. Believe me people have tried and tried to get that puppy mill taken care of but some how they keep going around it. It's terrible.

If you can't shoot a gun at them b/c of location stop at an archery pro shop and let them know there are lots of yotes around and they are welcome to come practice on them. Especially if they are running in neighborhoods.

We close our dog door at night. Molly would be out at all hours barking at the raccoons and I like to keep peace with our neighbors plus I like my sleep. Be careful with the coyotes. We live in the suburbs and they are getting more and more aggressive.

In upstate NY they are very very loud in the spring-fall but quiet in the inter. Maybe b/c my windows are closed! I have a pack that runs in the field above my woods (I only have 10 acres). Hate the noise! Plenty of people around here to shoot them though and my neighbors have a feral cat colony- coyote dinner!

The wildlife range is definately changing and animals are adapting. Where I live you would never expect to see deer, and yotes. This year I had an 8 point buck in my front yard, when I went out the start the truck it scared the the heck out of me when it bolted.. We now see deer every few days in our neighborhood. One evening towards dark I was on the front porch and a yote strolled right down the center of our street, then alittle later he came back thru.

I had a trapper come out once and trap them.  He used the humane trap and sold them to the fenced fox hunters.  They use them instead of foxes.

we have a huge coyote problem here too. we've heard several dogs being killed by the coyotes and there was a new pack this year. usually only 2 but we heard a 3rd this time. kinda creepy when you go out with the dogs and hear all that going on. luckily they haven't attacked a human that around here that i know of. but i have a friend that has a half coyote half blue heeler dog and she is absolutely amazing. can herd anything and has no fear whatsoever.
