Poor Dax doesnt feel well today. 4 Days ago he got sick with diharrhea and threw up a little, I didn't feed him that day and let his stomach settle. He was very sleepy all day and layed around the house untill the evening, when he appeared to get better. I slowly increased his food to the normal amount over the past few days, and he was fine. Today, he woke up with the same thing. I let him out where he squatted for 15 minutes, and then threw up a little bit. He then came inside and layed down with my sister (who is also sick). What should I do?

Should I call the vet now or wait till tomorrow if he's not feeling better?

Also...should  I fast him today? Or just give him a little rice and burger?

Two important questions: 1. What is his temperature? 2. Can he keep water down?

I havn't taken his temperature....(Cant find a dang thermometer that doesn't go in someones mouth...Id hate to mix em up haha) My mom is at the store now, im gonna call and have her grab one. He keeps water down great...he's always been a big drinker/pee-er. He hasn't yet drank anything this morning though, he crawled under the covers and went back to sleep. He did this the first time too, wasn't hungry but would drink, and slept most of the day. Then by evening he was his bouncy playful self and stayed that way for a few days.

The first time we thought it was just because he got his last set of shots the day before...and he wasn't feeling well due to them, but I guess not...

Considering you have 2 sick dogs and the have been sick over a period of time, I would call the vet.

Dax (and my sister) are actually the only ones sick, its just the second day he's been feeling bad during the week. Im gonna take his temp. when the thermometer arrives, and then call the vet with the results of that (usually they just tell you the usual stuff that you already know..."don't feed today, give bland food for a few days after, lots of water, a little gatorade to hydrate"). So hopefully when I call with some details they'll be able to give a little more insight and tell me if I should bring him in or not.

is there anything he could be getting in to in the house , or outside that might be causing this? A houseplant, or shrub? Cleaners? Soap? (Xara has an Ivory soap fetish YUCK!)

Our lab and boxer loved soap! We had to keep the bathroom door shut cuz they would go into the bath tub and eat the soap...luckily they had iron stomachs and never got sick! Matter of fact the lab ate a ladies leg shaver and didn't get hurt from it!

Donner has soft poop this morning, not quite diarrhea, but he was outside forever squatting and trying to poop. Blitz wanted to come in and eat so I made Donner come in (my mistake) and they both ate breakfast. Then Donner had some accidents in the house, so I put him out for a while and now he is sleeping. I think for lunch just rice today! Though I don't think he is sick...the dogs woke up at 2am when my husband got home from work and I took Donner out for a potty, well while I had him out my hubby let Blitz out, I didn't want to get them in a playful mood so I scooped Donner up and brought him in (the night before at this time he pooped but I didn't let him this time, my fault). All night he wouldn't sleep, probably cuz he had to go! Anyway I am hoping he is better now.

I hope yours isn't really sick! Have fun with the temperature taking!

oh yes....the temperature taking will be a blast haha, and im sure Dax will love it to. He just woke up and is actually playing, and not moping around so thats a good sign. I constantly watch him so I don't think theres anything he could have gotten ahold of ....except toilet paper...he loves stealing toilet paper and tissues. Ill let you know what his temp is then when I get the thermometer ( I woulda went to get it but our roads are still bad and my mom is getting groceries anyway...so I just asked her to grab one for me...unfortunately she wont be home till around noon though)

Sometimes with puppies if you give them anything but their food they will get diarrhea. So, think about if you gave Dax any treats and if so what are they? Did you give him anything similar the second time he got sick? If so, stay away from those treats for a while until he is older and he has a stronger stomach. I have gone through similar bouts with all my shorthairs when they were puppies and they all grew up to have cast iron stomachs. The only thing I watch for is a fever, blood in the stool, low water intake (this one is important because puppies dehydrate fast), or a problem that persists more than a day. If I see any of the above we go to the vet.

Not to scare you, but I almost lost my oldest girl when she was about 5 months old to salmonella. We still do not know how she got it. But Belle was young enough and it took hold and she was really sick and went down really fast. I had her at the vet after one day and they kept her on IVs and put her on an antibiotic (broad spectrum) as they had no idea what was going on. They did a slew of tests and found nothing. The only thing that saved her was the broad spectrum antibiotic and my vet took a culture and sent it in just to be safe. It takes 3 days to culture for salmonella and when it came back positive everyone was surprised. They switched he to a more specific antibiotic and she was fine within 24 hours. She was in the vet hospital though for several days on fluids and that broad spectrum antibiotic. The broad spectrum antibiotic was not enough to kill the salmonella, but it slowed it down.

With an adult dog they develop immunities to salmonella because they are exposed to it in the environment so much and typically never have a reaction to it. With puppies with developing immune systems it they are exposed to it in quantity before they develop the immunities you have a problem like Belle had.

I suspect that this is just a minor upset, but watch your pup just to be safe.

When Koda was sick with liquid diarrhea, I made her rice and boiled chicken for a few days. When her stools became more firm I transitioned her back to her kibble. I had switched her to a "better" quality food that did not agree with her (Nutro Ultra). I would have liked to transition her off the food, but it made her so sick I threw out the rest. I mixed the rice and chicken with her new food Innova, and she's fine now. The thing you have to worry about is dehydration, so it's good that he's drinking. I've heard fasting can be good, but Koda had lost weight already, and I wanted her to eat. Have you switched his food around lately?

Went through enteritis with Queen.  Give unflavored pediolite + water 50/50.  Give crushed ice.  Resort to gatorade if you have to.  We fed rice and lamb/chicken for 2 days, and then she was back to normal.  Good luck

My vet recommends pedialyte ice cubes.  I also use them in the summer when it gets too hot and the dogs have been out for a long time.

so, he doesn't have a temperature at all, just the upset belly this morning. He does drink, but not like he usually does ( he can usually clear the water bowl in 5 minutes....hes not drinking quite as much as normal, but he is drinking). The less drinking could also be from not playing a whole lot, im trying to keep him kinda calm today. He has been trying to play recently and is acting pretty good. Im just trying to keep him calm/watching the bird feeder.

is venison and rice ok? or am I better with chicken/rice?

Keep a close eye on him and take him to the vet if things get worse or just not better. Sick puppies make me nervous so I always take them to the vet as soon as I am uncomfortable with a situation they have.

What type of food do you normally feed him? If he eats venison, I wouldn't switch him to chicken unless you know he can tolerate it. Venison seems fine to me, but when I called the vet they said "white and white," meaning white rice and "white" chicken. I had already made some brown rice, and Koda had no problem with it.

Chicken is a little easier to digest, so chicken would probably be better.

He's had chicken and rice, seems to be feeling 150% today and very wild haha. Which is good, I just hope he doesn't feel sick again in a day or two like last time. Im gonna feed him the chicken and rice for atleast two days here. Yesterday he only got a tiny bit for dinner, I didnt want him sick in his crate again. I felt so bad for him though, he was acting normal/playful/starving....I just didn't want to risk it. When they stare at you with those eyes! and vacume up any crumbs on the floor I feel so guilty, like he thinks I forgot to feed him haha. Today hes much better so far.

Okay, coming in in the middle of this, but remind me again how old Dax is. Could he be cutting his molars? (that could be from 5-8 months) When they are cutting teeth some are just like babies and will have diarrhea and be off their feed, but have no temp. You can try wetting down a sock tied in the middle and then freezing it...let him chew on it just like a teething ring for puppies. Just a suggestions. Hope things continue to go well for you both. :)

Hmmm, I wonder if it could be from teething??? He's gonna be 18 weeks old on tuesday and has been teething for the past few weeks. So far its only his insisors, but his canines should be coming through soon. Would that upset his stomach?
