My GSP has suddenly taken on the habit of jumping our 4 ft 1/2 ft fence that encloses our backyard. He does thisat night when he is let out even for a very short time. He doesn't go far and he does come back very quickly when called. But this is a worrisome problem because there is coyotes around and they are very previantly this time of year. What might I do to solve this problem?

Can you maybe add some height to the fence using trellis or something? Now he knows he can jump it, it'll be hard to stop him, and you wont be able to relax and leave him out to run about if you think he'll be escaping.

These guys can jump that high of a fence easily...most put up 6 feet...maybe you can run that invisible electric fence along your current fence...

Not sure you can train them not to do it...

I did this (reinforced a fixed fence w/electric) -- works great.  I was concearned when we picked up our puppy we saw his dad jump (on command) a 4 foot fence and clear it by about 8 - 10 inches.  If you are going with a fixed fence I would go with 6 feet -- anything less is tempting fate.  You COULD train them not to do it with a remote trainer, but it would be easier to do an electric fence.

I agree with what everyone is suggesting. I had a 4 foot fence and swapped it out for a 6 foot fence before mine learned they could go over the fence. I think they could even get over the 6 footer, but since they never went over they shorter fence they do not think in terms of going over the 6 footer. If that hadn't worked, I would have then added the electronic fence.

When one of my former set of GSPs realized she could get out, I bought 50' lengths of "garden fencing" (I think its about 48") and, using stakes, wired it up to extend the height of my fence. It looked horrible but it worked. In fact I did similar to "raise" a stretch of chain link in my current house. One advantage is that if it isn't stretched absolutely tight, it gives inward if anybody jumps up and gets a foothold.
