Hahaha, sounds stupid, but in all the 16 weeks Dax and I have been together the dog has never been out of breath enough to pant. 4 mile walks-no problem. Running off leash in a field for hours-easy. Wrestling with a big english lab puppy-bring it on! Even when wrestling my cousins english lab puppy for two hours straight....he was just sleepy, but not out of breath (the lab on the other hand looked like he was gonna die!). Well today, after an hour or so of rough housing and wrestling along with chasing my sisters puppies and some fetch...DAX PANTED!!! for all of about 5 seconds. But it was the first time he was ever exhausted. Sorry for the boring post....but this was the first time he's been tired like that haha, I thought it would never happen!

Not boring! I thought it was funny! Sounds like he wasn't tired out long!

Mine pant, but not this time of year, more so in the summer when we get really hot in TX. With Belle I had to wait to hear her bark. I didn't think she could bark because I had her for 6 months before she ever barked. When she did everyone stopped and looked because she had such a big deep bark. To this day she rarely barks, but when she does I check it out because it means something isn't right. She is a fantastic watch dog. She doesn't even bark when my other two bark, only when she deems it necessary does she bark.

Panting doesn't necessarily mean your dog is out of breath. Dogs pant to regulate their tempature.

It's tough to get Tessa to pant in the winter but in a bird field on a warm (not even hot) day, she pants like hell, because she runs like the devil. But she never stops when she pants, she just wants to go on and on - so when summer comes around, watch out for heat stroke and don't just go by whether or not your dog seems tired. I had to take Tessa off the field on a few occasions because it was not safe for her to go on. Last time was during a hunt test in November, warm day, and dogs were overheating fast.

To live without dogs would mean accepting a form of blindness. [Thomas McGuane]
