:( sadly debating whether to keep my little GSP pup...she has a peeing in house problem...over 6 months of switching foods and paying vet bills...longest streak was 1 week without an accident...what to do with no job, can't keep paying expensive vet bills that don't cure problem...I tried to prevail but am at my wits and wallets end...anyone know a good home :(

Beverly Quarles Post the issue on shorthairs.net and see if anyone can come up with a solution that will help. How old is she? Can you describe what is happening? Do you know if it is medical or not? Give me a bit more info, and I may be able to give some advice.

Katie VanderZanden She is definately peeing, not leaking. We are 99% sure its not medical, but we really cannot afford more vet bills for her. We have already switched her food multiple times, had her on meds, done tons of urine tests. Its just getting to overwhelming when caring for the dog takes all of our energy, when we should be spending time with the kids.

Beverly Quarles You guys may already do this, but a suggestion as something here might help you. Keep your pup on a leash with you or crated while inside. At the very least get some baby gates and confine her in an area. Don't let her have run of the house and don't let her go unsupervised in teh house. Then go back to square one on potty training. Make sure she goes out after meals, play and sleep. Don't let her go more than a few hours without going out. If you catch her in the act, tell her No and take her out. Be sure though that you clean up the pee spots with something that kills the odor or she will go right back and pee in the same place later. It will become her pee spot in the house. When she pees outside praise her. You can even tell her to pee and she will get to where she will pee onn command (I do this with my dogs and it is nice). If she pees and you don't catch her in the act, don't say anything. Remember dogs live in the moment and she won't have a clue as to what you are upset about. My guess is she is confused about where to pee. You have to help her understand. It shouldn't take very long if you are consistent. Glad to hear it is not a medical issue as those are much harder to deal with.

Katie VanderZanden We always take her to the bathroom in the same spot, so she knows where to go. When she is in the house she is our every 30 - 45 minutes at least. We don't really have room in our house to confine her anywhere that isn't needed most of the day. We have gone back to square one with potty training her twice already with no improvement. This has been going on since day one with her. She will be fine for a week, then have three weeks of wetting in the house. If we just had the puppy we could probably deal with it, but having three little boys, one of which will be crawling in the very near future, really makes us take a step back and look at what is best for our sanity. Hopefully she improves soon!

Beverly Quarles Well she is old enough to be totally house broken. Has she been spayed and when? Sometimes bitches that are spayed will have a hard time holding it, incontinence. There is medication for that. Females are usually easy to housebreak, so this is a really unusual type problem and I can understand your frustration especially with little ones around. If you don't have a crate, I would get one as it could certainly help you by just giving you a break if nothing else. I would also post on www.shorthairs.net and see if anyone else has ideas too.

Katie VanderZanden We do have a crate, but she pees in there too. She isn't spayed so that isn't the problem. It just so frustrating because we trained our other dogs in a matter of days, and have had no luck with her after 7 months:(

Beverly Quarles Wow, and I thought my boy was a pain. If you can, catch her in the act and make sure she knows you are not happy, then get her outside and when she goes outside make a huge deal about it. She seems to be having problems in understanding where to go. I am assuming she does not poop inside?? Somehow, you have to get through to her that it is inappropriate to go inside. I know you said she pees in the crate, when she pees in the house is it the same place in the house are different places, any pattern to when and where she pees?

Katie VanderZanden She pees anywhere and everywhere in the house. And she has started pooping lately also. We really have no ideas anymore since there is no rhyme or reason to this at all.

Beverly Quarles So, I would try to catch her in the act and let her know in no uncertain terms that peeing in the house is a no no, immediately put her outside, and leave her out until she pees. When she does pee make a big deal of going outside and give her treats. Also, as I said earlier make sure you clean up the pee area with something like Resolve or another product that kills the pet odor or she will go back to the same spot.

Nate Vander Zanden hey Bev and others I thank you for the suggestions...basically she both pees and leaks...she has been on 2 bladder muscle control meds and multiple antibiotics for UTIs have switched her food multiple times in this order (nutro, taste of the wild, diamond, canidae, and now purina pro plan performance) she has done the best on the latter 2 except both give her and my other dog the worst gas I have ever smelled. She will be great for a week then multiple weeks sparatically going in house...she knows not to go in house and to go outside it shouldn't be confusion I am very stearn and methodical about house training and crate/kennel training...how do I know this? she runs to the door after most accidents or she comes and sits right next to you and shakes like shes having a seizure...if I catch her in the act the simple word NO causes her to cower and submissively pee...if I don't catch her and I find it, I go to the door and say lets go outside she runs to the door goes outside and pees in the garage by the door to get into backyard...she pees in her kennel when ever she is in there and we are home (not seperation anxiety) if we are gone she can go 7am to 7pm no problem what so ever. In the last 2 weeks she has had 2 poop accidents in the house. I have had the vet try to help me with other fecal/urine problems with her also...everytime she runs she poops every 5-10 minutes and keeps straining to poop even when nothing comes out...tried adding fiber and more meds to fix it...occasionally while running she urinates like a male marking his territory...I dealt with a few of these problems with my older shorthair but was able to get it under control after a short period of time. I have tried everything even the vet said I have the patience of a saint with this dog but I have run out and so has my wallet. I hold high hopes for her as she is an awesome hunting dog and has a great personality but the cons currently out weigh the pros. I have not given an ultimatum but I figure 1 year no progress she will have to be rehomed.

Nate Vander Zanden one more thing about kennel urination...I can take her out she'll go potty..bring her in put her in kennel...sit down eat dinner with family the whole times she is howling and whining...30 minutes later go to get her she has peed in kennel...if I put bark collar on her and she does not get over excited she is fine in kennel while we are home...I feel it is psycological based on that fact...she has a hyper active bladder or something is my guess but so far no meds have been able to help.

I use Nature's Miracle to clean the spots and a hoover steam cleaner with pet stain and odor remover once a month sometimes twice to keep my carpets clean and not stinky.

some of what you describe is soooo like Xara. Xara will go outside, pee, and then come back in and be put in her crate only to whine and immediately pee in her crate. Frustrating as all get out when I KNOW she just peed outside!! I've chalked it up to her getting too sidetracked at smelling and playing with Sniper that she's not emptying her bladder fully before she comes in and then realizes once she's in that Oops! she has to go more! Xara pees sometimes 4 or 5 times when she's outside for say 15 minutes to potty, she never does it all at once like most dogs do. She goes, then she will run around, pee a bit more, and so on and if she doesn't get enough time for that last dribble she goes in her crate.
She also is not good about holding it, even for a minute once she's told me she has to go out. When she goes to the door I better be right behind her or she's leaking all over while running up and down the hallway by the door.
Underdeveloped sphincter muscles? I've never asked my vet about this, but I've wondered if that was an issue with her. However it makes sense as the sphincter is the muscle that controls this bodily function. I've decided to wait and see if as Xara grows this stops and she learns to better control her bodily functions or not. She too will go days with no problems and then all of a sudden have days where she can't seem to control herself. I have learned to monitor her water intake closely. Especially as evening comes on and on warmer days, for some reason evening is when she wants to tank up on water. This leads to a spell around 8 every night that she will either pee in her crate, or pee on the floor. So from 6 to 10 she gets very little water and that does help.
Have you tried monitoring her water intake when she is in the house? By this I mean only putting down so much water at a time occassionally throughout the day, enough she's hydrated, but not allowing her free reign to tank up. Xara will literally drink for 5 min straight if I allow it in the evening, I have noo idea why because she does not do it during the daytime!
I've also noticed that putting water on her dry dog food helps some with her water intake. The dry food was making her drink tons after she ate, so I now moisten it up a bit before I feed her and have noticed she does not immediately run to the water bowl after eating anymore.
Xara has never, ever pooped in the house, she can control that well.
