Got my youngest coming into the 2 year range and need to get his hips done.  What is everyone paying for this?  Got a quote for $16 for blood work and $288 for the Xrays.  How does that stack up to your areas?  Another question, does your vet put the dog out for the Xray?  My wife has concerns with anesthesia, its administration and long term effects on the dog.

Not sure what the price is here (I work at Cornell vet) but based on the stifle xrays my boy has had, price sounds about right. Yes, they do give them a short acting anesthetic. This is usually not a worry. He will be groggy most likely for the rest of the day but no long term effects.

$16 for blood work is extremely cheap. Does the $288 include the sedation, xrays, etc?

I did hips and elbows with my girl so mine was allot more. They used anesthesia, but I was ok with that because I had her teeth cleaned and a small cyst removed at the same time. I do know there are some vets that do it without anesthesia. The closest one that I know of to me is in Houston, so I let my vet do it here with the anesthesia and just combine it will other work like the teeth. My girl had no problems with the anesthesia and her hips and elbows came back good. Just be sure you have a vet that knows how to do the xrays right.

I know when I had my male springer done years ago they didn't give him anything, but said if he needed some it would only be enough to relax him, it wouldn't fully knock him out. Dundee relaxed and let them manipulate him anyway they needed so they forgo the sedative.
I'd find out if the sedatation will knock him out totally, or if it's just a light sedation and the dog is simply groggy.

When I do OFA at the vet's office in a normal visit, it's about $200 and none of mine have needed sedation as they are all willing to lay in whatever position the vet and tech put them in. PennHIP is more and always requires sedation. When my vet has an OFA clinic (sponsored by various kennel clubs) I can get OFA done for about $100, which is nice. The quote you got seems a little high for OFA, more reasonable for PennHIP.

They have to be at least 2 YO for OFA. You can get preliminaries done earlier, but they have to be 2 for the real deal.

My boy had stifle (knee) surgery and I can look back and check prices. I get a discount but I should be able to figure out approximately what rads were. Stifle is a cheaper pace to do rads then hips but it will give a general idea for that and sedation. They also did his hips but luckily for my wallet, wrote it off to a study someone was doing. I will check my old bills tonight.

Prices depend so much on the type of practice and where it is located. Around here, we have pretty expensive places with top notch ortho vets but if you travel 20 mins, prices go down substantially. Does this clinic have a radiologist on staff or do the rads have to be sent out and read? That too would contribute to cost.

Sailor--- I look at an old bill and Max's stifle radiographs were $150. Sedation, etc were minimal extra charges but that will give you a general idea. Remember too that the rads have to be sent to OFA to be read- no sure how much that is.
I have no knowledge of vets doing hip rads without sedation as positioning the dog correctly would be hard without it. Positioning is incredibly important and can mean the difference between excellent and fair in some cases.
Good luck!
