| You might also try giving him a small meal closer to bed time. Sounds like he is getting up and is really hungry. I know my boy had a hard time going from his last meal to the next morning. He would just get hungry. So, I gave him a half cup of kibble about an hour before bed and it helped. |

| I also fed 3 x day at that age. Those special bowls mentioned above I think have something in the middle that the dog has to eat around, which slows things down. You can try to put a big rock in the bowl, which serves the same purpose. |

| Ok, this might be a dumb question, but you all have got me thinking. Ever since we got Osiris 3 years ago from the rescue, we have fed him 3 cups once a day. That is what they did so that is what we do. Is that enough?? He doesnt appear too skinny and doesnt act starved.... just thinking... what if I've been underfeeding him all this time....??? |

On my dog food bag is says dogs 50-100 pounds eat between 4 cups to 6 cups a day...
So right now Blitz is 7 months and about 50ish pounds (haven't had him to the vet lately so I am guessing when the new puppy goes the the vet I am bringing Blitz to weigh him) I was giving him the 4 1/2 cups a day through 3 feedings, but he was always searching for food and running to his food cabinet...so I am now giving him 5 cups a day in by 3 feedings and he is much better on the begging...
I am curious how many cups a day the 1yr and up dogs are getting? |

I feed twice a day and Xara seems to do ok with that. She does eat fast, but she always has. Sniper is my inhaler, that does does not taste a bite!! I solved the problem by putting a rather large rock in the middle of his bowl and making him have to eat around it. It works beautifully. You just have to make sure the rock is large enough not to be swallowed. Xara at 6 months gets 1 1/2 cup in the morning, and 1 cup in the afternoon. She's perfectly built. Not too skinny, not too fat. She has a nice tuck in her tummy area, but no ribs or backbone are poking out. It really depends on each dogs metabolism on how much to feed. My two springers weigh about 5 lbs different, yet one gets 3 cups of food a day and the other one gets 2 cups. Sienna can eat more than Sniper and maintain a constant weight. Sniper tends to begin getting fat on more food (he's being cut back right now because he's getting a bit of a paunch on him) ideally he should run around 45 lbs for his body structure, and Sienna about 55 lbs. Right now she's at the 55 mark, but he's been running about 51 lbs,,,,too fat! He's been cut to 1 1/2 cups food for now. In the summer they tend to eat more because we are more active with walks and playtime in the yard. |

I feed twice a day at 5 am and 5 pm. I didn't realize it was exactly 12 hours apart until I was reading this thread. On average (mine each get a variation of this because they are three different sizes) I feed only kibble in the morning (1.5 cups) and kibble and canned in the evening (1.5 cups kibble, 1 cup canned). I also include a skin and coat supplement in the evening meal along with a joint supplement in the form of a peanut butter biscuit. Thet also will get quality leftovers mixed into there meal if I have something (could be meats, cheese, vegetables, etc) and about twice a week I add sardines to there meal. In the summer I back off this a bit and run them lean because of the heat in Texas. In the winter this goes up some because they are outside allot and it is colder and they burn calories staying warm. Their actual activity level stays pretty constant throughout the year. For treats (and I use allot of small treat bits in training which I typically do every day), they get either home backed liver treats (I use chicken liver and sometimes add peanut butter, molasses, sweet potato, carrots, etc so the formula varies a bit) or banana bits (made with ripe bananas). |

| I use the California Natural Skin and Coat Supplement (I buy in online in the bigger bottle because it is cheaper, but they have it at pet stores that carry Califonia Natural). California Natural is made by the same company that makes Innova. The company is called Natura. I usually don't feed anything but there food until about 6 months because mine all had a tendency to get runny poop if I added anything out of the ordinary to the food. After about 6 months they seemed not to be bothered by the additional stuff. |

| I guess by what Bev feeds I am probably feeding good since I only do kibble but if you ad the kibble, can food and left overs that probably equals what mine eats... |

| Rocky inhales his food in a few gulps if placed in a bowl. So my Behavior Dog Trainer suggested, feeding him with his dry food spread out on a cookie sheet. Works out well. He still goes after it fast but takes longer to eat it. To change it up a little will also spread his food between 2 cookie sheets and 2 bowls all spread in single layers. Rocky gets 1 1/2 cup of dry Canidae in the morning and 1 1/2 cup in evening. If ran outside hard in cold weather and more active days, will add a 1/2 cup of dry mid afternoon. |

| Splat - Just take a look at your dog. If you can see the last two ribs you are doing good. I adjust based on that and don't worry about the exact amount. |

A cheap trick is to invert a small bowl in the larger bowl and put the food around the edge. I've also heard of putting a ball in the bowl. Probably not a good idea with GSP's since they would want to play instead of eat.
My GSP's eat 2 cups a day each. They both free feed. I've never had dogs that have done that. There is asbolutely no competition for food from either one and their bowls are right next to each other on top of a rubber maid container. They are brother and sister (9 months apart). If feed them in the morning and quite often there is still food in the bowls in the evening.

Yeah I think he is looking the way he should...I know I had been feeding him a lot more (miss read the feeding label) and he was getting very plump...so then I cut it back to 4 cups a day and he did loose the weight but was really wanting to eat...I think he is good right now at the 5 cups a day...I am thinking maybe when he gets past all of the puppy growth stuff and I switch to 2 feedings a day he will be able to go to 4 cups a day... I have debated putting a bowl or rock in his bowl to slow his eating down too...he just eats it so fast! Sometimes he gets hiccups from eating so fast! |

I add a bit of warm water to my dogs' kibble prior to feeding to slow them down. They eat between 2-3 cups per day total. I supplement with fish oil, vitamin C and an herbal joint supplement for the older dogs. |
