I just looked at Nutrena's site. They list their foods but not ingredients. I would pick a food that has meat as the first ingredient. Most of the low-medium grade foods are mostly corn, soy and meat by product meal. YUCK. There are lots of good foods recommended here- TOTW, Wellness, Orijen, Innova. Yes, must more expensive but in the long run, well worth it for our babies! Mine do not have gas on Orijen (grain free) but they do have gas after eating voles! |

| I do think the grain free helps gas issues...so I try to stay with a meat (not meal) as first ingredient and grain free...I have been switching it up between about 3 different brands just because I know I wouldn't want to eat the same thing all the time...though I am probably putting human feelings into my dog, he probably doesn't care what it is as long as he gets to eat! |

LOL, Voles....YUCK, I'd probably fart or worse too!! Nothing worse that a GSP passing gas.....-PHEW- My breeder swears by River Run, but I'm leaning toward Innova Adult Formula. Same as their Evo but it has a little grain in it. Still thinking about Puppy food, will probably go with Innova's puppy food too. At least for the first while. Thanks all |

| I feed Innova and my 4 dogs do really well on it - no gas. less cleanup. I have always used Adult food even for puppies. If you are running your dogs hard you might want to mix a little EVO in it. The other thing that sold me - all ingredients USA grown and produced in a USA plant supporting USA workers - are you catching my theme here LOL |

| I used Innova and Wellness, Innova kibble and Wellness canned, before I switched to the Shaeffer kibble. The only reason I changed is a friend was developing the Shaeffer kibble and wanted to to try it on my dogs since they are performance dogs and the kibble is for performance dogs. It is very similar to Innova so I switched. Their coats are much thicker and shinier now. Belle was also getting a bit reddish in her coat with Innova and that too disappeared. I was using the EVO which had beef too. About this same time we discovered Belle was allergic to beef. So, I have stayed with the Shaeffer. It isn't widely distributed yet, but is a very good food and it is allot cheaper than Innova. |

What I don't like about TOTW is the overly high protein % 27% high enough, imho
Shaeffer? Is that just local to you ? |

Shaeffer is just local right now. Are you saying you don't like the high protein, or you do? Just curious, because my gang does better on the higher protein. The Shaeffer I feed is 30% protein and 16% fat, but that said my dogs are very active. Everything I feed for meat has either turkey, chicken, lamb or venison in it, no beef because of my oldest girls allergies. |

| Mine had terrible wind and loose stools on chicken and rice kibble (science plan) i've now moved him to lamb and rice kibble (purina) and he's fine. I did some research and some dogs can have poultry intolerance, kind of like IBS in humans. |

| Belle- I prefer something around 27% for normal feeding but during their move active times of the year increasing it is a good idea. At least thats what I have found to work best for our routines. But I do not have the acreage and nearby areas to run a dog everyday like I used to, nor is the bird hunting here anywhere near what it was back in Michigan so I am figuring on a lifestyle with not as much activity as I have been able to provide before. Taking them running is a lot different than taking them hunting. The days are no where near as long, the terrain is much less strenuous.....but hopefully I'll be getting turned on to some better training fiedls nearby where I can work them like they enjoy to be worked. |

Mike- Yes, my guys eat voles like popcorn. My old Hound cross taught my young GSP to dig and find them. They both dig fast and hard. I am afraid once we start training again he will have forgotten about birds and just hunt voles!! One walk I counted 11 that my old gal caught. The food I feed is 40% protein and both dogs do wonderful on it. They look amazing and the 11.5 yr old is like a youngster. I do feed them partially homemade (meats, veggies, yogurt, fish oil, flax seed) as well. If you are looking for food for a pup however, I would not feed grain free. I had my boy on Innova and Wellness Adult. Both are excellent foods! I switched him after his first bday to the grain free. |

Purina Pro Plan Performance Formula. Price sucks but my dog had issues with other food and things got messy. My GSP has a great coat, clean teeth and solid poo. |

check out this website ... I'm not sure who runs it, but is seems to be a fair analysis of what we are given our dogs:
