Raw, home-cooked and Taste of the Wild. They do awesome on it, great coats, maintain weight well hunting season, way less clean-up and meaty bones keep teeth nice!

My 2 shorthairs eat Lamb and Rice. Either Diamond or Costco's L&R which is made by Diamond. The Costco brand first ingredient is lamb, while I believe the first Diamond ingredient is lamb meal. No soy, corn, wheat or fillers. The Costco is about $24.00 for 40 lbs, while the Diamond is about $29.00. The only problem with the Costco is the fact that we end up spending about $200.00 when we go to Costco. I don't notice an extraordinary amount of gassines, which we experienced when they were on Iams. They both enjoy this food. Kaiser is 13+ and Gator is almost 3. It'd not about the cost, somewhere I read that 23% protein and 14% fat was a good ratio. When Gator was a pup,he ate Iams Smart  Puppy and Kaiser was on Purina One Senior. But they would eat each others food. So I wanted something that would be ok for them both. Both have good coats, muscle tone, good stools.

Buddy eats Premium Edge chicken and rice, was thinking of switching Taste of the Wild, he has bad enough gas on Premium Edge. There have been a few mornings when were going hunting I have to drive a few miles with the windows down at 20 degrees, 70 MPH to clear the truck.

Thanks all!  Read 10 & 11-interesting reading.

I've been reading something on foods, different brands and contents. I remeber years back when we changed and went to Iams. Much less refuse which we were told meant they were using more of the food, less being wasted. I like the 'less bm' idea....lol. Well we moved the dog to California Blend, I believe, and there was no detrimental outcome that I remember. Now since I have been out of the game there has been this huge recall of dog foods. So I'm trying to be more careful about choosing food. Seems the Innova Adult Formula is the same as their Evo type, but has some grains in it. I think it might be better for the dog instead of all meat. Guess that depends on the particular dog though. Price wise, Eukenuba is nearly the same price as the Innova AF from what I have found.

Then there's the puppy food thing. Much of what I have read says it might be better to use a all life food because ingrediants in most puppy foods (kibble) seem to promote later life bone problems due to promoting, through calcium and phospherous ingrediants, bones to grow too fast. This helps create bone problems later in life. Or at the least, to only use puppy kibble for a few months, then make the switch.

I know feeding them Gravy Train will fill their bellys (not saying GT is bad....lol) but I want the pup to grow to his greatest physical potential. I want him to feel well too.

So much to digest...lol

My 9-month-old male is eating Innova Puppy Formula Dry Food. He likes it, but I'm not sure if he would like or thrive on a different brand. We also have not decided when to move him to adult food. One thing about Innova: my pup always has solid poops.

Taste of the Wild High Prairie formula -- he does well on it. Everything I have ever fed my shorthair has given him gas. I started him on OptaGest (http://inclover.com/optagest_dogs.html) and it has worked fairly well in reducing the amount of gas and loose stools.

I keep reading about the gaseous anomalies that come from shorthairs and I am surprised. My three never seem to have gas unless they get a hold of something nasty rotten (read trail trash or road kill or the like). When that happens they can clear a room. I feed a very high protein and fat food with very little grain (high quality human grade ingredients with proper minerals, etc.) It is only kibble in the morning and a kibble canned mix in the evenings. They eat twice a day at 5 am and 5pm. The treats they get are for the most part homemade with either liver or bananas. When I have leftover vegetables or meats I will mix those in and will often add things like yogurt, sardines, spinach, sweet potatoes, salmon, cottage cheese, etc.

So my question is what do folks think causes the gas problems in their dogs?

Bev,

I truly wish I knew... Since the day we brought him home he has had gas issues. I've always fed high-quality food (TOTW, I think you will agree is pretty good). The treats he gets are all high protein chicken or turkey. Only about 2 - 4 times per month do I "surprise" him with wet food instead of dry kibble, but even then it's usually either TOTW, Merrick or Canidae.

We switched to TOTW and oh boy- did we ever have to switch back to Pro Plan performance.

I started Buddy on Pro Plan Chix rice, he was fine, upgraded to TOTW for a bit, gas was pottent, then to Premium Edge, gas got better, still bad but actually after 6 or so months on it is less frequent.

Zimbass YOU CRACK ME UP ! I can see that one coming  my way .I am thinking of adding cooked rice to mix in with TOTW  .I  do notice  the gas is when i open a new bag .Do they spray a gravy on top of the bag before shipping ?  I thought some companys do that  but not sure if they do . I just bought a new bag  of TOTW and tried mixing in  Veterinarian Formulated Chicken and rice about 90 percent to 10 pecent and was almost ready to open  all the windows (its 16 degrees  out)(been far east)
