The other day someone told me that rawhides were unsafe for dogs because they get chewy and the dogs choke on them. They only use nylabones. I have never used a nylabone and have always used rawhides without any problems. Anyone have any opinions about this? Also how long does a nylabone last? To me it looks like it would be gone in a flash. I bought a giant rawhide and it has been 1 1/2 weeks and he just got off one end 2 nights ago.
Just looking over the petsmart site I see there are dentley's bones and they have good reviews as lasting long and not getting soggy like the rawhide...maybe this is a good bone to use.
I also looked up reviews on the nylabones and dogs love them but they are more liek a treat cuz they finish them fast. |

| Queen, our 13 week old, has 2 rawhide and 1 nyla bones. She likes all of them equally. I do not worry about rawhide. All of our dogs in the past have LOVED them. My worry is plastic. Spoons, bottle caps. etc.......plastic is everywhere. I had to poke my fingers down her throat last night and extricate the cupped part of a plastic spoon. |

| I use knuckle bones - freeze them first, then let them chew awhile and refreeze, they are kinda messy though. Bully sticks are another favorite here as are dehydrated lamb lung - I buy those at the store. I just make sure that the are US Made. |

| We've never had any any problems with rawhide...and all our dogs seem to really enjoy them. I've heard all of the same things too about rawhide being unsafe. We just supervise and take them away when they become too small. Also, try a pressed rawhide bone sometime! they last a while and the dogs really really like them. |

| Oh yeah....bully sticks are another good one, and so are antlers. I have all of them around the house, and all the dogs like each one of them. |

| I've never given rawhide, ever. I use the hard type Nylabones and bully stix. As well as fresh marrow bones. |

I have a knucklebone now too with the giant rawhide. Blitz seems to be really enjoying them and they are lasting a long time!
I do not give rawhides in the cage, so he only gets them supervised.
I should try the antler! |

| Mine love rawhides, but they only get them when I can supervise the chewing. I have two power chewers who can destroy a big rawhide quickly. For everyday I use the deer antlers and they are great. They last forever, which is good with power chewers, don't splinter (they crumble into a powdery residue that is full of good minerals), and my dogs all love them. My oldest girl, Belle, is also allergic to beef so I had to find a substitute for beef bones since she is one of my power chewers. I have also gotten some bison bones lately that are pretty good. |

I'm huge fan of Nylabones but only give rawhide on occasion when I can supervise. My dogs are all heavy chewers (toys only) and I have had Nylabones last for years. Make sure that you buy the ones that are for Power Chewers. I got this cool one for Christmas. It has a soccer ball in the centre so it's soft for the dog to carry but hard Nylabone ends.

| Mine are only so so with the Nylabones, but I bet they might like the one with the soccer ball in the middle. I will have to look for it. |

There were different types of sports balls in the centre of these Nylabones, football, soccer etc.

I don't know that blitz is allergic to anything however when I changed him to a venision no grain dog food his stools became more solid and not as often and his gas got better....so I bet the antlers would be great! I am gonna look them up for when he is done with this rawhide.
I only give him the rawhide when we are around....never when we leave him in his cage....I don't give any toys in the cage cuz he rips through his stuffed animals and I don't need him swallowing any of that either!
I am not sure I have run across a power chewers nylabone...I'll keep my eye out for it! |

| We use to give our dogs rawhides until we lost our lab from blockage caused by the rawhide. We just will not chance it any more. |

That's what I have been told about them. I had never had a problem with them and never knew anyone who did. If I can find an alternative that works and last I will switch.
I did see the long lasting nylabone and that looked like it would last a bit. The knucklebone I have seems to be lasting too. I want to try the antler too. SO I have options! |

| The knuckle bones I was talking about you find in the butcher shop or grocery store meat area. They will have a small amount of meat left on them. Do not boil them. I freeze mine first,then left them chew awhile and then refreeze till next time. They clean the dogs teeth great. |

| Depending on what they are charging per pound - they most I have paid is 4.00 for 2. I can only find them in 1 grocery store here and they go fast. When I was up in WY & Mt. I was actually searching for elk meat for my dogs and ran across the bison bones. I am sure there are places online you can buy them but they are not as cheap as the ones you buy at the grocery store. |
