I have read online about German Short-hair pointers and English pointers...they seem very similar except most GSP get docked tails and the English pointer doesn't.  I think the EP is taller too...

Does anyone know any other differences, personality, ect..

EP's have short hair too right?

Taken from my book, "TO THE POINT a tribute to Pointing Dogs."

Author Dale C. Spartas and Tom Davis.

Pointers are indifferent toward retrieving, although there are some pointers who will retrieve like a lab. No breed hits its birds harder and faster that the Pointer. They run high on one speed in the wide open fields with the hunters on horse back.  Pointers have a reputation fo being cool, aloof and undemonstrative. They regard their owners/handlers/ trainers not so much as friends but as facilitators or business partners. Temperamentally better suited to this impersonal professional relationship. One of the biggest reasons thye'er preferred by field trail trainers.

Never have been around a Pointer, but would be fun and an honor to meet one.

I have both an EP & GSP. Yes they have short hair almost shorter than my GSP. They are very vocal, mine is a snuggle bug - which is surprising because she was a kennel dog for the first 7 months of her life before we got her. She is a bigger runner than my GSP and to watch her point is one of the most awesome things I have ever seen. Like Marie said runs hard & hits the birds on a dime. I do not actively hunt my dogs (they are pets) but I do work with them on all aspects of hunting. She was a little aloof when we first got her but she is fine now. I thought GSP were active dogs but my EP never stops - I swear she sleeps with one eye open - always ready to go. If you look back on some of my older posts I believe there are pictures of her - she has an all white body with a black mask. On my FB account also has pictures. Height wise she is smaller than my GSP but he is a male.

Marie you will meet her if I ever get up your way.

When I adopted Chelsea, I was told she might have some EP mixed in--she is the white with liver mask in my avatar.  Her coat is REALLY short and she is a little bit aloof compared to the other GSPs I've had.  (Her muzzle, side view, is also a little more squared due to slightly heavier flews.)  She is also the  most obsessively prey-oriented.  However, when she is in the mood she is also very playful and affectionate, so if she is a mix, she worked out fine.   I guess I'll  keep her (adopted 2001).

I have really fell in love with the GSP... I am very fond of the short hair and floppy ears...We just got our new house and we have been thinking of getting Blitz a doggie friend (adopting/rescuing)... I see lots of EP's and some GSP's and some just say pointer which I check to make sure it is a short haired looking one...

Sounds like they just might be a little more energetic than the GSP, but that would be ok with me! Though I do love the docked tail cuz it doesn't knock into things, LOL!

Don't get me wrong my EP is very calm in the house but she does like to go man go. It never fails that when I am petting both dogs the EP's tail always smacks my GSP's in the face - he just looks at her like dang English dogs with there tails LOL

I've had both. Same ages too. I found the EP's are a lot calmer in the house. I havent seen any other differences really.

So better to say about same energy level just depending on the actual dogs personality...

A GSP has a prettier head/face.

From what I can tell from pictures the GSP has a longer more slender nose and the EP has a slightly bigger head...I may be wrong....

Yes that is true slender nose on the GSP compared to what I call block head on the EP. Both of my Pointers have adapted to our lifestyle - they know quiet time and go time.
Both breeds are awesome - they have there own personalities that make them unique, I also own hounds. Were you able to find my pictures?

A few years ago, there was an english pointer who pretty much was kept outside, in a fenced back yard, in a corner house the next block over. At the end of our blocks, there is a 4 block long, about 100 foot right of way stretch of grass that abuts to an elevated railroad track, that many people use as a place to walk their dogs. Left to his own defense, the EP would get out of his fence, and would run up and down the expanse, exercising himself, and when fully exercised, would return to the fenced yard. He never wandered off the right of way, never bothered anyone. I always thought the dog was so smart and clever, being able to know enough to exercise himself, and adapt to his less than ideal situation.

She looks like she's wearing a burglar's mask!

Yes, its the slightly squarer nose that makes me suspect they were right about Chelsea, and that barely-there coat.  She's also extremely sensitive, which I've heard is also an EP characteristic--one cross word and she shrinks all up.

I think it also depends a lot on the dogs pedigree as far as looks go in the EP more so then the GSP.

Both EP's, one from more hunting lines and the 2nd from more show lines:

Alot depends on the lines too. Elhew EP are bred to be foot hunting family dogs. When Robert "made" this line he didnt have AA dogs in his mond he had a nice foot hunting dog and used trials to grade these dogs. Therefore your Elhew EP is going to be alot calmer and more level in the house compared to some of the bigger running AA field trial bred dogs.

The same can be said about GSP's you look at some of the foot hunting lines and compare them to some of the bigger running trial dogs that are high strung and bred to run and they will be a little harder in the house as well.

That being said there are exceptions and every dog is different.

If you are looking for a pointer I would siggest looking at a Elhew or Elhew x Gaurdrail breeding.

15 yrs ago my wife noticed this guy hanging round a fast food joint way too skinny. I had asked her a few days earlier if we could get a dog. She brought him home to me and he lived with us for 13 yrs. We named him "Bonz" due to the condition she found him in. I know everyone thinks they had the best one but Bonz REALLY was the best dog in the world ever. Here he is at 13 yrs old. Over weight and totally blind. WAAAAAY more laid back than Dexter.
