So, we have always let our dogs get on the couch. Our oldest dog Maddison rippied one of our older couches when she was younger just from getting on and off of it. She still is alloud to get on the couch and so are the smaller dogs (all under 15 pounds). We decided from the beggining that we wouldnt let Dax on the couch (Mostly my moms idea...since its her furniture) because he is likely to be at least 60 pounds. Well needless to say, after 2 weeks, mom feels bad and now really wants him to be able to snuggle on the couch as long as his nails stay trimmed well. What do you guys think? Do you let your dogs on the couch?
ps: He doesn't usually want up unless other people are sitting there. He has a big dog bed that is "his place" and he lays there on his own all the time, and he really loves it.
Thanks,
Garrett |

| HA! Mine all get on the furniture. I enjoy them snuggling with me so I've never made it a rule they can't be on it. I'm actually glad Xara doesn't shed much, it's so much nicer than the springer hair all over everything when they get up LOL |

| we do...i bet you will find when you start to alow him on the couch his bed is going to become less popular. it is definitely not a right tho..if we need to space they have to move. Dieter just goes to his bed which is right by the couch anyway and fin usually moves to our bed. But most of the time we just snuggle up with them. If i lay in "the Spoon" position Dieter gets behind my legs and fin snuggles into my gut..ahhh i love it |

Uh -- what would sit on the couch if GSPs weren't on it? At my house I can't imagine what would -- hmmm -- not the Dachshund (she has the chair) -- hmmm -- definitely not the cat (she must feel like the step pet -- but she does have the top of they dryer with her cat bed) -- hmmm -- welll -- I suppose one of us could sit on it -- uh -- NAW -- that would be silly (wouldn't it??). Rocky prefers the E- Zee Chairs in the living room, or our bed in the bedroom. Doesn't go on the couch very rarely. |

My dog and none of the dogs i've had in the past have ever been allowed on the furniture. They don't go up stairs either. I have beds and blankets on the floor for them and I sit on the floor and let them fall asleep on me. It's all a matter of personal choice. My Aunt does not even allow her dogs in the sitting room and my mother thinks our dog should be confined to the kitchen. When I told her it would be hard to do that as it's all open plan she said she should be shut in the office and that doesn't even have any access to the house. We had a dog when I was growing up and I never remember it being shut out. Other friends have their dogs sleep on the bed with them. I think if the other dogs are allowed on the couch 1 should not be treated differently. It should be all or none. |

Yep...in my house, the human is lucky to get a spot on the couch or the bed!! (actually, at night, Tara is the only one who sleeps with me - pups are in their crates, old Buck cannot get in bed anymore, has his own bed next to mine, rest sleep in living room or sons room) |

We have a sing in the house that says if you don't want fur on your cloths don't sit on the furniture. That is why they call it FUR-niture! |

| We don't have kids -- our animals ARE essentially our kids, so they come on the furniture and snuggle. I don't have a problem with it, and nobody who knows us and our animals does either. If they do, they haven't said (or they're not welcome back). |

We definitely let our three on the couches as well! I don't know what I'd do in the wintertime when they act as our own personal little "heaters"! Ha. We have leather couches so to help protect them we bought those dog covers from Orvis. They're very thick and durable and can be washed over and over again. They seem to work nicely although too bad they don't cover the arms b/c our youngest GSP (3 yr old male) chewed the leather up on both couch arms! My husband was upset, but I always tell him - you can replace the couches but not the dogs |

| GSP_Mom - Ringo chewed up the arm of a leather chair and a leather ottoman among other things. I was able to get both repaired. The leather isn't an exact match, but unless you are looking you can't tell the difference. For me my dogs teach me to worry less about the material things and more about the other stuff. I would give away everything for my dogs, so in the scheme of things what is one leather chair. |

Two couch girls here! I didn't care, but my husband didn't want them on the furniture. I was kind of hesitant too, as I got my first ever new furniture set in 2005, when we moved into our current place. My old lab had been an outside dog most of her life, so it wasn't an issue with her, and she never tried to get up. Then came puppy Roxi, and getting on the floor to snuggle with her, lasted about two weeks. Then HE was the one that broke his own rule, and started letting her sleep on his lap in the chair. From there it was no looking back, and it's a nightly battle as to who they're going to come lay with--him in his chair or me on the sofa. |

Rayne had to move to the back of the furniture to get a spot when she was a puppy. The other dogs usually got up first and gave her the evil eye if she tried to sit on them. Now at almost a year and a half and 50lbs, she still lounges on the back of the sofa!

Texas Belle - sounds like we are in the same boat. I actually did get them repaired the first time (three of the four arms were chewed up on two of the couches), and it cost about $1,500. They lasted like new again for about two weeks and then got chewed again, so I decided to let them be. I'm exactly like you when it comes to material things - nothing is worth even a fraction of what my babies are! We don't have any kids, so the three dogs are our "children" and mean the world to me!! Couches smouches |
