So, we have always let our dogs get on the couch. Our oldest dog Maddison rippied one of our older couches when she was younger just from getting on and off of it. She still is alloud to get on the couch and so are the smaller dogs (all under 15 pounds). We decided from the beggining that we wouldnt let Dax on the couch (Mostly my moms idea...since its her furniture) because he is likely to be at least 60 pounds. Well needless to say, after 2 weeks, mom feels bad and now really wants him to be able to snuggle on the couch as long as his nails stay trimmed well. What do you guys think? Do you let your dogs on the couch?

ps: He doesn't usually want up unless other people are sitting there. He has a big dog bed that is "his place" and he lays there on his own all the time, and he really loves it.

I'm with Dave.  My best friend came over the other day and she and I were sitting on the floor in the family room talking and we looked around.  Belle was in the big leather chair, the cats were on the other chair and Ringo and Halo were on the sofa.  If we had wanted to we could not sit on the furniture without disturbing an animal.  LOL Yes, my shorthairs are allowed on the furniture. 

Here is a picture of all three on the sofa in my fifth wheel.  As you can seen I use Mexican blankets to cover the furniture.  They protect the fabric, they are washable and they are durable.

Rocky prefers the E- Zee Chairs in the living room, or our bed in the bedroom. Doesn't go on the couch very rarely.

Never !   Nor on the futon.

Two couch girls here!  I didn't care, but my husband didn't want them on the furniture.  I was kind of hesitant too, as I got my first ever new furniture set in 2005, when we moved into our current place.  My old lab had been an outside dog most of her life, so it wasn't an issue with her, and she never tried to get up.  Then came puppy Roxi, and getting on the floor to snuggle with her, lasted about two weeks.  Then HE was the one that broke his own rule, and started letting her sleep on his lap in the chair.  From there it was no looking back, and it's a nightly battle as to who they're going to come lay with--him in his chair or me on the sofa.

Rayne had to move to the back of the furniture to get a spot when she was a puppy. The other dogs usually got up first and gave her the evil eye if she tried to sit on them. Now at almost a year and a half and 50lbs, she still lounges on the back of the sofa!
