These pictures I got off my crappy phone camera from Sunday up in the mountains while we were out on our first official snow run. Hopefully I'll get some better ones here soon. In the meantime, winter weather has hit central WA full force, and I got home just before midnight last night after a 6 mile run and there's serveral inches in the yard.

The hounds are sporting little 'safty jackets' made for us by Alpine Outfitters. I think we'll be using them often on weekends while we're running snowmobile routes, especially on those days where there's a lot of fog... they really do make the dogs much more visible.

Meg your GSP's really look sharp in those bright orange jackets. Smart idea to have your GSP's wear those jackets for warmth safety!!! You never know when you are out on those trails if you will meet with a Gun Hunter for what ever hunting season it is. Here in WI we just ended a 9 day Gun Deer season and now I hear it is Muzzle Gun deer hunting for this week. So yes we will stay out of the woods!!

I would love to see that GSP dog sledding up here in the Mac City mush. Show those Huskies how to do it right!!! Love the vests on your dogs. I put them on mine when I hunt them.
We have about 7 inches of snow here now.

The jackets aren't big enough to keep them warm, which is a GOOD thing- they get warm enough when running that overheating can become a problem, even when running on snow.

If any of you get to a sled dog race this winter you may be surprised to see how many look remarkably like the hounds we know and love. Good GSPs can really bust down the doors in a sprint race. We tend to do longer distances (on crappier trails) so I'm happy to be averaging 7+mph this season.

Last night I trucked them out to a drainage on the other side of the valley where they feed elk all winter. The storm had really pushed them down, so as soon as I got to the mouth elk were piling across the road and trundling around in the headlights and beyond. The dogs were in the hound box yipping their soprano alarm-excitement song.

Or were they? That yapping sure sounded loud... I turned around to remember that I'd unwisely decided to not snap the latchs on the dog box. Anya and Dulcie were both riding in the bed with heads hung out (Dulcie even propping herself up on the side for a better view), ears flying out like wings facing the driving snow, shrieking at the elk darting frantically out of the headlights and beyond.

I stopped immediately and told the miscreants that while they'd had their fun, they needed to GET IN THAT BOX NOW. Latches snapped shut this time of course. I swear they piled back in with smiles. Weasels. :)

It always amazes me as to what these guys can get into or out of. They are so smart. Good thing they didn't jump out.

Great pictures Megan. It's great to see how versatile our breed is. I was just reading an article about how they are breeding shorthairs with sibes for sprint racing.

There's been some breeding w/ sibes over in Europe, but I suspect most of the crosses these days are with Alaskan huskies. The AH has roots in the village dogs along the Yukon/Kuskokuim rivers and from there has been synthesized through various breed additions as a pure performance dog.
