I live in Chicago, so we make good use of the dog parks. We occassionally see one or two GSPs at the park, and, of couse, we hang with them when we do. We don't think our current GSP (we rescued him about 1.5 years ago) is trained to hunt, but recently he got very excited by my husband's shotgun and hunting clothes, so who knows. He (the husband, not the dog) belonged to a hunt club in southern WI and used hunt our last GSP on farm raised pheasant, quail and chuckar (sp?). We also rescued her, and she was trained when we got her, so she taught my husband how to hunt. And for what it's worth...I'm a Northwestern alum. This is a great thread. It's great to get to know a little bit about the other posters. |

I'm in Pittsburgh, PA, while not a lot of birds in the city we have tons of areas surrounding us where hunters delight in finding birds.
My daughter went to Cornell University for a bit and lives in over by Albany in Cobleskill, NY. Beautiful country up that way!
While GSP's abound in her area, we see very very few around the Pittsburgh area and none in the suburbs I live in.
What burb are you in, I think there might be more than you think. There are three of us on this thread alone??? |

In PA, near Philadelphia.
My inlaws live in near Wilmington DE. I just hunted game lands #43 between berks and chester county over the Thanksgiving holiday. Really nice bird fields, didn't find any birds? But I liked the cover? |

There are tons of very nice places to hunt. However, like you mentioned, not much game really.

We live in St. Paul, MN. We live1/2 a block away from Como Park, a large recreational area that includes a zoo, and a lake with a walking trail around it. I often see other Shorthairs, either at the lake, or on any of the main roads leading to the park. |

| We currently live in Cookeville, TN but hopefully will be moving next week to Sparta, TN. (They are only 20 mins away from each other) My husband and I finally got the house we've been trying to get since July. There are no dog parks anywhere near us so we made sure we have plently of room. The house came with 5.25 acres which we are planning to fence with no climb horse fence this spring and let the dogs have full reign...lol. |

We both grew up in SE Michigan (South of Ypsilanti for me, Belleville for Karen) -- back in the 1960s we could literally grab a 12 gague, let Fritz (our GSP) out, and walk back from our back property and hunt Pheasant -- now there are sub dvisions, our old road I grew up on has been blacktopped, and there are very few corn fields. Thirty years ago we moved from Michgan to Colorado (via a short time window in AZ where Chandler was 15 miles out in the desert with only cotton fields around it) where we've been -- brutal weather sometimes mixed with wonderful cool low humidity climates -- which I LOVE For fun -- AKC does have a site that lists the top 10 breeds for 50 different cities across the United States and in some locales the GSP is in the Top 10: http://www.akc.org/reg/topdogsbycity.cfm For Denver, GSPs are the #7 breed of all breeds -- some places in "Fly Over Country" have the GSP higher than that Here is Denver: http://www.akc.org/reg/topdogsbycity.cfm?page=2#DENVER Dave |

Sorry -- what I meant to say is the GSP is #9 in Denver and is as high as #7 in other parts of the central US.
