Anya goes in on the 19th for the deed. I decided she's got lots of talented brothers and sisters left intact- including her brother standing at stud with Clay back at Lehmschlog- and for all her nice qualities she's just NOT the sharpest pencil in the drawer.

The toughest part will be keeping her 'calm' while she heals. If there was ever a candidate for an in-kennel hampster wheel, she's it.

I remember my vet telling me to keep Molly quiet for several days---makes you wonder if they have ever treated a GSP.  It used to be you just told them to spay the dog, now they have all the extras--laser, extra tests, more pain meds---all very expensive.

My vet told me before Daniel got "tutored" that he might be a little groggy and out of it for a day or two. He was bouncing off the kennel walls at the vets within an hour after waking up from the surgery. :D

Have I mentioned that I LOVE my current vet? Apparently she got to thinking about the little Tazmanian and had her front office gal call me today to ask if she could keep Anya over the weekend at the vet's, but only charge me for one night. Like me, she just wants to make SURE that those stitches stay in for the first few days. FWIW her dad raised GSPs, so she knows what I'm up against.

She also knows that my dogs are perfectly happy camping out in a vet's crate over the weekend and making new human friends in the process. Here's yet another plug for MAKING SURE YOUR DOG IS USED TO ODD TEMPORARY HOUSING ITERATIONS WITH STRANGE PEOPLE... in this case it means my vet is willing to do extra post-surgical care for no extra money!!!

How did the "tutoring" go? I just set up a tutoring appointment for my new dog Layla. The thought of GSP (or even half-GSP) puppies running amuk in my house gives me nightmares, so I would have her spayed even if it wasn't part of the adoption process!

Hopefully I fixed the cartoon in the first post, because it's a classic and IMO should be used often in these discussions. :)

Anya is doing very well.... almost TOO well, the little brat never acts like anything wrong and doesn't slow down a lick, LOL. I still have her dog house pulled out of her kennel so she doesn't jump up/jump down, but it's been warm and she still has shade and protection from the wind so no harm there. She hasn't been bothering the stitches at all so that's a major plus.

I'll have to check with the vet but I think her stitches can come out on Thursday, which I may just do myself since my parents aren't going to be able to watch my almost-2yo while I run the dog to the vet.... last time she screamed bloody murder until I let her down in the waiting room to go poke at some homeless kittens in a large cage in the waiting room, then loudly protested leaving.

So the final score is: Anya 1, kid 0, mom -1.

I remember when we got our dog tutored (what a great word to use) and the vet's assistant told us to keep him calm we just looked at her and started laughing and laughing - she couldn't figure out what was so funny but she had never had any dealings with a GSP before. Quiet and calm yeah right that lasted about 1 hour after the meds wore off.

The most amazing thing happened Monday. Molly had to go for x-rays and we left her because they were going to have to sedate her. They called us an hour later and were all finished and they complimented her on her kennel behaviour and said that they did not have to sedate her because she laid perfectly quiet on the x-ray table. Amazing because this dog (being female) is the ultimate "psycho bitch". When the vet said she had OCD we had to decide if he meant osteochondritis dissecans or obsessive compulsive disorder. Could go either way.

With a GSP I would vote for obsessive compulsive as an almost sure thing. :D

I got Layla spayed while I was on vacation a couple weeks ago and when I called the vet the day after the surgery she said everything went fine with the surgery, but that she found something she wanted to talk to me about. My heart just froze & I had visions of my sweet little girl having cancer & dying just weeks after I got her. The vet must have sensed my panic, because she quickly said it was something interesting, not harmful.

So, guess what... Layla is a hermaphrodite! Yep, that's right, my little girl has a penis! (Insert off-color joke here ;) ) It's not visible from the outside, but the vet says it is definitely there and she is suprised that Layla had gone into heat because usually they are sterile. It's only the 2nd or 3rd case she has seen in over 20 years, so she was pretty excited about it.

Layla is the "girliest" female dog I have ever had, so I guess the male part isn't all dominant... and it hasn't stopped several male dogs from trying to get ... friendly... with her. It's certainly a fun story to tell, though!

Wow, that's amazing! A good thing to have her spayed though, because you certainly wouldn't want to take a chance (however remote) of passing that along.

Definitely not something to pass along, no! I was just wondering how common it was with GSPs, because when I mentioned it to one of the rescue coordinators, she said her friend's GSP has the same problem!

I figured I'd just use this old thread instead of starting a new one... My Ladybug is getting 'tutored' today and I pick her up tomorrow.  While I was reading this thread it said to keep her calm.  Are there any tips for doing that outside of lots of drugs?!?!?!?  She has been a pretty calm girl these last few days, but she was just getting used to me too.  I was looking for feedback on how to keep a gsp "calm."

Layla was very good about keeping herself calm (amazingly enough!). She was definitely out of steam for a few days & mostly slept. But, other than drugs, or 24/7 in a crate, I have no idea how to make a GSP be calm when they don't want to. Good luck!

I am glad to hear everyone had pretty much the same reaction to me when told by the vet to keep your dog calm for a few days. I had no idea on how I was to go about that task.

Somehow we made it just fine, although Jed was ready to go on like it was just another day..... he showed no signs that the "tutoring" even took place even when I picked him up from the vets he was his normal self ready to run/play/jump..

Daniel didn't seem to notice or care, he was bouncing off the walls of the kennel at the vet's within an hour of waking up (he HATES to be in a small space) and the vet gave him early release because he was obviously doing just fine. My vet is very familiar with high energy breeds, so he always laughs when he tells me to TRY & keep them quiet. :D

Gunner was "tutored" last Thursday, the Vet says keep him calm from running ans swimming for 10 days. 10 Days, he lasted all of about an hour after I picked him up before he was bouncing off the walls to play.. Must say though he certainly seems more affectionate now, not sure if that is my imagination or not. He didn't seem to need the pain drugs so stopped giving them after 24 hours. He has waled and trotted and leaped a few times without any problems and incision still looks good. Love that cartoon too. I do swear the cats were laughing at him when he got home though.

Ooo. Thanks for the reminder. Time to book little man Bo for his "education".

Well we just booked Bo in for his tutoring (in 2 weeks ... he will be exactly 15 months). They will be doing the procedure with a laser. Anyone have any experience with this? What is the typical recovery?

We had Molly spayed using the laser. We had trouble with the wound wanting to open up and "weep" . I'm sure the spay procedure is a little more drastic than neutering. We used to go to a fairly large clinic but we never seemed to get the same vet twice and there were always add-ons---laser, blood tests before surgery and pain meds. I would have thought some of these were the standard part of the procedure. Now we go to a small vet office--much happier with them.
