Update: I took her to the park this p.m. for a little easy romp and noticed right away she was not up to par She ran some, sniffed some, checked all the objectives as usual but was subdued, and didn't run like a maniac like she usually does - I have never seen her so toned down ever! Then, more bloody diarrhea. She also shakes/shivers off and on. Other than that she seems normal. I called the vet who said bring her right in before they close for the night. Still no fever, although her temp was higher than yesterday, also she now weighs 42. 5 lbs! Yikes! (Down from 48). Vet thought she still looks okay but yes, she needs some weight on her. Not dehydrated yet enough for IVs. He's pretty sure it's not a foreign body. So he gave me more meds - sulfalazine (for colitis which he thinks it now is in addition to small bowel issue) - and took a long time discussing what and how to feed her. They gave me a huge discount - I must have looked pathetic...just keep dropping my money there! - let's hope this was it! I have people coming in from out of STATE tomorrow for a photo event I am leading - timing is kinda awkward to say the least! |

| Oh, and vet also suspects that the stress of the spay surgery, followed by antibiotics, followed by the corona shot (damn those shots!) followed by whatever she ate, was just too much for her intestines. |

| Just be sure she is drinking water and staying hydrated. They can go without food for a while, but water is important. The biggest worry with diarrhea is dehydration. Did the vet do a culture of any kind? Good luck with Tessa and hugs and kisses from the Texas gang. |

Bev, the vet did not do a culture. Acutally, she saw two different vets (same clinic) and neither one brought it up. I trust them though. If she is not better by Monday I guess that's what they will do. Tessa never drinks much anyway and hasn't touched her water since Wednesday. BUT: I outsmart her by feeding her 4 times a day that special i/d canned food with some rice, all mixed up with water and pedialyte. It's actually a soup. In between she gets water/pedialyte with a little canned i/d mixed in, she falls for that too hehe. I think she is well hydrated now. But yes, dehydration is something that I tend to worry about with these bouts... This a.m. she had one more bout of loose stool with some blood (gee!) but nothing at all since then. She seems fine. |

I sure hope Tessa gets back up to her old self soon. I can "hear" the concern in your "voice" when you talk about her. I'd be sick with worry myself not knowing what was going on. I used to have an Irish Setter who I had to force feed. He too had horrible stomach issues, would get the bloody diahrea, vomit etc if he ate one morsel of something other than his normal diet. I could not keep weight on him as he'd go off his feed and wouldn't eat for days on end until I made satin balls and literally stuffed them down his throat. Vet could never find a thing wrong and chalked it up to irritable bowel and colitis. I'd give him meds, he'd vomit them back up. Hardest dog I ever owned to feed. Tessa, you get yourself up and going girl! you're worrying us all! |

Well, I am glad to report she is up and running again!
Took her to the park this morning and she ran like the devil. Her stool is soft (but so is her diet!) but no more blood. I think the second med did the trick. Yay!
MelB, there is IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) that is chronic and presents with symptoms like that...wow, I can't imagine how that must be to go through this on a regular basis!

Glad to hear Tessa is on the mend! Ya know when we start to worry about Murphy getting dehydrated when he has stomach problems we trick him into "drinking water" by feeding him ice cubes. I'm not sure why but he thinks ice is better than treats...when we run the ice maker on the fridge he comes running from wherever he is in the house hoping to get "a treat"! We've actually trained him on a few obedience things with those ice cubes So the last time he was pretty sick and wasn't eating or drinking at all I did manage to get a glass or two full of ice cubes down him just to keep him hydrated. Maybe something to think about just in case you ever need it again! |

Yes, she had the blood for 3 days! I was starting to freak a little... I think we're good now. Stools are still soft, but that's the diet. Will add her normal kibble back in, slowly, starting tonight. Meds will run through this week. MurfsMa - she doesn't like ice cubes! Argh! First dog ever for me that didn't. I don't think she likes water, period, unless she can submerge her whole body in it |

| My gosh what a mess. Sorry to hear your girl is down. Is there a chance she injested a toxin from somewhere? I hope she rebounds soon! |

| She is on the mend now, I think, stools are still soft but have a shape, and we just finished the Flagyl. She was well enough to run in the Junior Hunter this weekend, thank God! |
