pvstks -

I don't think anyone was offended so no apology is needed. I always think food is a good discussion and I always learn something when the topic comes up. Again, I think this was an excellent discussion. Glad you raised it.

We were going to switch Sabine to an adult formula at six months but I think Texas Belle makes an excellent point re: evaluating your food against your goals for your individual dog. We'll be having a long rethink over here.

Great thread. Appreciate everyone weighing in with their opinions and experience. Plenty of food for thought.

Yeah I will probably be switching Blitz over to an adult or all stage in a couple months opposed to waiting for him to be a year....I just have to look into the brands at my stores in the area and see which is the best to switch to for Blitz...

Nope,not offended.
We have been on TOTW HP and both dogs have gas and are hungry. This is deer season so they have been on a semi-raw venison diet and will (hopefully) stay on it 2 months. Gas has cleared and no hungry bellies. The poop has been more then usual on TOTW,also. Twice a day has went up to 3-4 times a day. I'm feeding 3 1/2 cups. On the semi-raw they get 2lbs each and the volume is back down to twice a day and smaller.
What a gross post. Sorry.

Francine

Wolfgang had the most awful gas -- the whole house would stink and he had only semi-solid poop (the consistency of soft-serve ice cream).  This was regardless of what food he was on (started on Chicken Soup LB Puppy and moved to Innova LB Puppy).  Went to Healthy Pet Products (the lady I referenced in an earlier post) and she suggested OptaGest -- in fact, it's guranteed.  I saw dramatic improvements in just 3 or 4 days.  He takes about 3/4 of a teaspoon on his food once per day and it's not terribly expensive (about $16 for a 45 - 60 day supply).

Actually as I look around at the adult foods I want to change from the brand of puppy I have been using..it is one of the purina (can't remember if it is pro or one) lots of friends of mine recommended it (they have german shepards and healers)...I think Blitz is gaining weight and growing well on it, but I think he is very gasy and doesn't have constant stools....I didn't want to change too soon so I have had him on it since we got him but I am ready to make the change....

A week or so ago I had to feed Xara a different brand of puppy food because the pet store was out of her regular brand. I stuck with a chicken base but OMG the gas was horrendous. I was never so glad to get her old brand back again. I'm lucky in that switching her food doesn't seem to upset her stomach at all, my others would have had the runs and been miserable if I had to do it that quickly.
