After long and heartbreaking process, due to my new living conditions and job, I am now gone from my house 10 to 12 hours a day.  I have not been able to escape proof my backyard so Wachter has been living in a cage.    The new house is unendated with fleas and no matter what I do I can't get rid of them.  This is not the best condition for my little boy, and as heart wrenching as this is, I really need to find a place for him to go.  If possible I would like it to be somewhere close so I can visit him, but I understand that may not be.

Wachter is not a hunter, he is a house pet, he loves little kids, little dogs, big dogs and cats.  He is creative and can open most doors to include the cages if he is on the outside.  He is not destructive, and LOVES running with the bike.  We have done mushing training but not to the point where he pulls out front, he runs with the walky dog on the side of the bike. I can provide medical history from the time he was 4 weeks old. He has basic training and commands but we never managed to master the leash. He is chipped, and can be registered in your name.

Please contact me if you are interested.  I am not sure how long I will be able to stay active on this list... Please know that when you take my baby boy you will be taking a huge part of my heart with you.

What a heart-breaking decision for you, Carrie., I'm sure it wasn't arrived at easily. Unfortunately, I am too far away to be of any help. Just wanted to offer you some words of encouragement.

Thanks,
I haven't been able to stop crying yet about this. The only comfort is going to be that I am going to do everything I can to make sure that where-ever he ends up.. he will be happy there and they will love him as much as I do

Carrie -
If you could get the escape issue fixed and the fleas would there be an issue with keeping Watcher? I know how much he means to you. There are so many of us on this board that I feel we can help figure out a solution.

Those two issues would go a long way in me being able to keep him, so far on my budget and resources I haven't been able to fix either. If there was a way to fix this I would in a heartbeat. I will take any help I can get.

:(

Is he that destructive that he can't be left free(ish) in the house? Mine were a little... mischevious... when younger, but now that Layla is over 2 years & well-exercised, I can leave them in the house 10-12 hours if I have to (although I don't like to do that). Every now and then I will lose a throw pillow to their boredom, but it's a price well worth paying.

Carrie - This site has some very good tips for all-natural & fairly affordable flea remedies:

Good luck!

It is not that he is destructive.. He lets the other animals out.. and they tend to get into things they shouldn't. Add to that he is alone and unsupervised 12 hours a day 5 days a week... he gets bored so he tends to rearrange things for me. It is more like leaving a handful of kids free for a while.. you come home and they have helped to rearrange things.

For the fleas on the dogs, I had great results with the Comfortis product. Frontline, Promaris and BioSpot had stopped being effective on the dogs for fleas so I gave them each a Comfortis - within a few hours there were no fleas on the dogs. They had been covered before I gave them Comfortis. I don't know what I will do for ticks next spring but we don't have fleas anymore. Comfortis was expensive though - $93 for a 6 pack for 50-100 lbs dogs. (I'm not sure what the weight range was - my dogs are all about 50 to 65 lbs) This will also help with the house infestation but may not completely get rid of it. The dosage lasts for 30 days. We are just now closing in on the 30 day mark. Good luck.

I used to have to leave my old dog at home for long periods of time while I worked. She was good inside once she got older. Now Bearoff and Jenny have some separtaion anxiety, esp Bearoff. I give them a rawhide before I leave if I have to be gone all day, like Wednesday, and that seems to keep them out of most trouble. That probably isn't a daily option week after week though.

Carrie - I just saw this. Don't do anything rash. PM or IM me and maybe we can figure out how to work through the issues. The fleas can be controlled and there are ways to contain the beast. As for leaving him for 12 hours 5 days a week I am sure given a choice Wachter would choose to stay with you. Belle about did me in with all the stunts she pulled when she was younger, and I couldn't even crate her as she would break out of crates, so please IM me or send me an email and lets try to put together a plan of attack.

Looks like there are lots of others willing to pitch in and help to solve the problems too. So, lets get cracking on Operation Wachter!!

Hang in there girl, things always look dark just before they get better.

Wow that would be sad...I know that sometimes you reach a point in your life where you think or feel it's in the best interest of the DOG to rehome the dog. I know how much that hurts. I have been there (not with Tessa). I managed to work around it in the end and both the dog and I were the happier for it. I hope it will work out somehow for you too.

Carrie, Seven Dust made by Ortho is safe to use on the carpets and such and does a great job for killing fleas and it's not overly expensive. When I had a cat in FLA with them and she was nursing kittens the vet even said I could put it ON her! I did and she was absolutely fine and I've heard of others using it.
I put it on my carpets and left it sit overnight and vacuumed it up the next day. I did it for a day, skipped a day did it again, and then skipped 2 days and did it again and never had another flea after that. You might want to check it out?
Could you put a run outside for Watcher to be on for a bit to run around? One of the cable runs? Not the best answer, but it would allow him to exercise without being able to get away and out of the yard.

Thank you everyone.

My kids found out about this post and while the oldest is happy the youngest is with you guys.. she thinks he is annoying.. but no more than her older sister is, and after all we can't get rid of her either.

I will keep looking for solutions.. Where do you get Seven Dust?

I think he suspects something and came to cuddle with me in bed this afternoon... that lasted all of about 5 minutes before he decided that I needed cheering up to the tune of jumping on the bed with me still in it.

BTW.. it was two years ago yesterday that we found him in the ditch. That isn't making my decision any easier.

Hang in there Carrie, and you know how to get a hold of me if you need someone to listen.

You can get Sevin at most gardening shops, Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. Some grocery stores even carry it.

Good luck!

Just wonder if there is a dog loving retired person in your neighborhood you can trust to come over let Wachter out of his cage mid day. Would give that person who loves dogs a chance to be around a loving dog. Maybe this retired person lives in an apartment where he or she cannot have a dog and this may be just the right fit for both of you in  win-win situation.

A cheap cheap and really good way to kill fleas is use dawn dish soap just the plain blue dawn will kill all fleas on the dog and the eggs and you can bathe in it once a week if needed (if you do it that often water it down some) it works just as good as flea dips and will kill them but is cheap a couple bucks a bottle.
