I'm happy to report >>we have a new Cabela's in our little neck of the woods Lacey Wa.

The problem is...we have no representation.....NO GSP stuff, granted, they may have a hunting book or training video ! No cute or cool stuff..all Labs !  I just feel a little discrimination ....Our "other" sport shop Sportsman's warehouse...has nothing either...I mean not even a hat or T shirt...

We spent 90 minutes in Cabela's yesterday...finally my hubby found a stuffed animal, we think was an attempt at portraying a pointer of sorts, just to make me feel better I decided it was a GSP. Anyone else see a lack of representation ?????  Maybe the GSP community is just SO ELITE....    Renee'

Yeah everything we ever find is a lab with a duck or pheasant. No GSP's. GRRR. I have come to the conclusion that we need to educate people on what our GSP's can do! I don't think people realize it!

If you have a Lab or a Golden, the sky's the limit for clothing items and hunting-themed gifts. We aren't so lucky to have a Cabela's here but we have Scheels and Gander Mountain. No GSP merchandise there either.

One of the neat things about having a GSP is the fact that they ARE, indeed, something a bit unique. I doubt people with Goldens give a second look to another person walking their Golden. If it's a GSP, we run across the street to meet and share stories. In addition, each GSP looks different from the next. To me, one Lab looks just like the next one.

I have found several websites selling GSP-related clothing and gifts by simply googling. Looks like for now, that may be the way for us to satisfy our desire to proudly wear our chosen breed or showcase them in our homes.

Maybe we should fee special to have something that is "not like the others". I know I sure do!!

We had bought a GSP puppy with a red bandana at LL Bean. We had later seen the same stuffed toy at Cabelas. We have also seen a picture of a GSP there.
We have gone to Cabelas in Michigan but were disappointed. It is nothing compared to the Hamburg,PA store. It is a recomended stop for anyone in the area.
Our kids love the laser gun gallery and the large food court, along with the to-die-for fudge.

If you get a Fosters & Smith catalog they are offering a throw which you can put any picture you want on it.It's a bit pricey at $140 but worth it to have YOUR OWN dog on it.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Let's be honest---Labs have been one of the most populaar dogs for years and that's who the big stores cater to. Here in Colorado GSPs have finally made it into the top 10 favorite dogs. We have at least 3 others in our area---but all of us know they are still special. Many years ago my first dog got out and got lost the day aftter the 4th of Jully. She was found by another GSP owner who came home to find her resting comfortably under a tree in his front yard. They said they were kind of sorry she had identifying tags because she was so sweet they wanted to keep her.

P.S. We are finally getting our first Cabelas in Colorado. They have had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get approved for such a big store in the metro area. They should have just talked to the Walmart people--they seem to be able to put their stores wherever they want.

I know what you mean, but think of it this way: at least the GSP isn't the massively overbred shadow-of-it's-sweet-and-useful-self that labs are! Right now my husband, sister, and I all agree we won't recommend a lab off-hand to anyone because we've run into so many that were lazy, unhealthy, and/or downright nasty. The problem is finding decent breeders in a sea of mediocre or worse labs.

Yeah, there are crummy GSPs out there too, but there just isn't the same massive swath of cruft to wade through IMO. Popularity comes with a price.

Hey Ranger
Unique is right, one day on our walk we were crossing the freeway overpass, this car slowed to talk to me about Bean....missing the on ramp and having to go a mile B4 he could turn around and access the freeway.
That's UNIQUE.......Oh yea, he had two at home (GSP'S)....he was travelling and missed them. In my immediate area I walk Bean two hours a day...NOBODY knows what "kind" of dog she is. When we first started walking (last January ) people would actually stop the thier car and ask...Now they just stare LOL

We get stopped all the time to be asked what Bo is ... I can't believe he can still fit through the door his head's so bloated from the "what a beautiful dog" comments. (Of course, I KNOW he's a beautiful dog, still it's nice to hear it.)

We have had the old rubber-necker, slow down to see the dog occassions too. The first was when he was just a little fellow ... this big white truck started pulling up beside me while I was walking Bo in the evening (we live in a VERY safe neighbourhood, but STILL!) ... I picked up my pace and then the window rolled down and the driver squealed, "it's a puppeeeeeee!". To which she then added, "Take a look in the back". Fool I am, and there were two very sweet older GSPs who had just come home from their run. Even more irony? We have the same first name.

We know each of the pointers in our neighbourhood (there are 4 others) and when Bo just seems to know he's found his own when we come upon them. (He even gravitates towards the neighbourhood wire-haired pointer).

I think the Cabela's catalog and website has more GSP items than you would find in the stores.  But in any event, check out the Christmas decorations on the National Wildlife Federation website (nwf.com).  They have a blown glass GSP ornament which is really neat!

Totally agree with Meg here, if I started seeing that stuff it would scare me! I would rather they stay the unpopular dogs they are! Also for lots of need gsp stuff, go to ebay and put german shorthair pointer in the search.

My brother met a hunter from Minnesota who is breeding small Labs--40# for females to 50# for males. He said they can run longer than a regular Lab, don't have the hip problems and live longer. My guess is they wouldn't meet the breed standard for Labs. I tell him just to get a GSP but he likes a mellower dog.

The field labs I've met are smaller and definately more to my taste... less helium between the ears and some motivation to actually DO something productive.

I'm hard pressed to find things with GSP's on them other then shopping online. We don't have a Cabela's, just Gander Mountain.

We went all the way down to Dundee Michigan to the cabella's store. It was awesome huge. One portrait of a GSP that's it. No books or anything. We have a dog store in Mackinaw City in the summer. We can usually get some things there. Cups, t shirts, writing pads, etc.. Plus they have home made doggie treats. Aside from that it's ebay

If you are looking for GSP-related items, GSP Rescue PA has a 'store' with a stuffed GSP, caps, sweats, tshirts and of course, our new cookbook .  Proceeds are for the rescues' direct dog care.

This morning on our walk we passed three of four other dogs. All of them were black labs. I'm glad I don't have a lab. They aren't bad dogs, they are just so generic. My girlfriend has a great lab that I love, but I would never buy one. I've only seen one other GSP in the neighborhood, a really good looking dude about a year old. His owner and I will run into each other occasionally on walks/runs and always have to stop and talk.

The only nice thing about the black labs in my neighborhood is that they all seem to be owned by cute, blonde SMU girls.

I took Mocha into the Crossings in Mac City(gift shops galore) when she was a pup and you couldn't believe all the attention she got! So many people asked what is she? One girl came up and she knew she was a GSP and used to have one. Most of the attention was from college age girls. I sure didn't mind the attention but my wife wasn't impressed!!

And if you're a lady, just tooling around with a GSP or two or three seems to gain you instant attention from every hunting guy out there. I've been happily married for 13 years so it does me little good but I find the phenomina amusing.

Yes, I catch up with ANY one I see with a GSP. I have been married going on 16 years but the attention is still flattering sometimes. But if you see one (GSP) you've got to go say hi!! It's a GSP thing right? It can't be me. Although my wife thinks I am crazy as I love these guys so much. This summer I spent about an hour sharing stories with this nice couple who had a 12 year old liver/white boy and a 1 year old liver roan in Mac city. Only trouble was that I didn't have any of mine with me!!
