Tessa,

Did your vet use a laser for the spay or scalpel? Just curious. My dad spayed my Keely, he used the laser. Worked like a charm. She was very good but was a big wimp for first 24hrs. After that I had to keep her from jumping on everything and busting stitches.

I thought 160. was too much for a neuter, we took our last 2 to the clinic, 50. apiece, and gave them a good donation.

Poor Tessa, I'm so glad she is doing well. Nova's spay was really hard on her.

Nova says: "Don't jump, it really hurts!" and "You might not want to chew out those things tied on your belly, even if they bug you. Mom and Dad got really mad about that..."

Brenda: that's the way to go!

There is a spay/neuter clinic on the outskirts of town, didn't think of it, would have been cheaper for sure. It being an important issue, there HAVE TO be less expensive options for folks who simply can't afford a $ 500 spay.

Wpevey: I have no idea. I am sure they would have charged me for laser, and it's not listed on the bill, so I assume it was traditional.

Nova: Thanks for the advice, I will pass it on! LOL. Tessa doesn't have any sutures on the outside though, which is nice.

So far, she's been GREAT. She's getting antsy, and it's tough to keep her from jumping once she gets out of the crate - on a leash - but once back inside the crate she just curls up, sighs, and sleeps it off. We are at day 2 now ...

I'm glad it went well! I can't believe what some people are paying for spay/neuter, though! No wonder there is a pet overpopulation problem! Layla's spay was right around $200 & they didn't charge extra for the... extras (Layla is a hermaphrodite, so she had boy parts as well as girl parts).

She was very good about keeping herself quiet the first few days, it seemed to take a lot out of her.

Regarding the cost of neutering/spaying. When Gator was a pup, 2 years ago, we signed up for the medical plan at Banfield. I believ that Banfield is a nationwide organization, ours is inside the PetsMart. Anyways, it was a plan that you could pay for 1 year coverage at a time, or the monthly payments which is what we did. We paid a membership fee of $21.00, and 12 monthly payents of $21.00 for a total of $273.00. This included all exams, vacinations and the neutering/spaying, as well as a discount on other services. When Gator was neutered, he also had a baby tooth that needed to be extracted, and his microchip was put in at the same time. I had to pay for the tooth extraction (I believe about $40.00, and $30.00 for the chip). I don't remember if I had to pay for the Rimadyl, or if that was included in the plan. The only thing I didn't like about Banfield was that it seemed like we saw a different vet each time, so we didn't have that close/personal relatonship that you get at a smaller animal hospital. There is one caveat, they will continue the coverage after the 1 year time, so you have to notify them to cancel it, it doesn't terminate automatically. Overall, it did work well for us.

Something to consider for you new puppy owners.

Glad to see Tessa's spay went well. Haven't been on because had a huge project due this past wenesday and a horse show this weekend. But I can't believe how much they charged you for a spay! Tink's was 100 with a microchip and nails also! Our vet is definitely one of a kind though he runs a non profit no kill rescue out of the office and he by far is the most reasonable in prices I've seen especially for the quality you are getting. My mom now even goes to him and she's 2 hrs away!

Hope Tessa has a speedy recovery she should Tink was ready to go in no time. She healed fast and didn't experience any complications. So I'm going to assume as littermates they have good healing genetics! Let us know when Tessa is better so we can get together!

Gatormom: Banfield/Petsmart is too far away from me, would not be an option. I have pretty nice pet insurance though, but they don't cover shots and spays. That's okay, it's all behind us now!

Caroline: I will let you know when we're up and running. I do have several busy weekends coming up, one is a hunting test at our plantation on November 14/15, if you want to come and watch, should be fun!

Tessa's recovery is going well. The scar looks good. I keep her crated or on the leash, and to my surprise, she just accepts it - no complaints at all. She is such a good patient! Can't wait to be able to take her out running again, though. This ain't no life for neither of us.

6 down, 4 to go!

We have made it through 6 days and Tessa is getting VERY impatient. Well, she's good most of the time but she has moments where I can tell OMG she's got a lot bottled up inside her. And the deer antler is almost gone.

When day 10 is completed, is it really safe to turn them loose, GSP style? I am planning on shaping her up with increasing walks starting Tuesday (they said no walks for 7 days), but can I let her run on Friday? I so want to!

That picture is priceless. I figured Tessa was keeping you busy since you haven't been on the forum much. Give her a hug from the Texas gang.

Yes, she's ready...so am I. Geeze! It was mostly crate for her but we made it without any complications. Her incision looks beautiful. Just too bad you can't explain to them why this change of routine...

Awww... poor Tessa! Glad to hear she's making it through downtime without making you insane though... well maybe mildy?! ;)
Love the picture though... those pleading eyes...makes you want to just grab her up and let her go in a big open field to run until her heart's content!
