I was watching a short clip on dobermans today and was surprised to find the GSP was involved in their creation. Well not really surprised. I always had a thing for dobermans. Anyway it got me to thinking about other breeds thta the gsp was involved in. I been searching google but all i have come up with so far is...

Doberman Pincher = german pincher + rottweiler + thuringian shepherd dog + black greyhound + great dane + weimaraner + GSP + german shepherd dog

Vizsla = old magyar vizsla + weimaraner + GSP

anyone know of any others?

Didn't know all of those. Good research.

There was an episode of Dogs 101 on Animal Planet recently that highlighted the GSP (yes I have it saved on my Tivo, haha). They state that the Old Spanish Pointer, the English Pointer, the Dalmation, Weimeraner, Tracking Hound, German Bird Dog, and the Vizla were put together to make the German Shorthair. I've never heard the Tracking Hound and German Bird Dog, but they did say that a dog as versatile as the GSP took a lot of careful breeding.

The episode was very cute and the showcased a dock jumping GSP :)

EDIT: Sorry I misunderstood your original post ... wrong info! Sorry!

Those Germans sure know how to make cars and dogs :)

They also know how to make beer! Most american styles are german too.

We saw that episode too! It was great! Although they should have highlighted hunting, not jumping. One thing I thought was fantastic about that episode of dogs 101 was that in their summary at the end, EVERYTHING about the GSP breed was positive. Health, Manners, Life Span, Grooming, Family Friendly, they did emphasize the need for exercise, but I don't see that as a negative....... really nice to have another affirmation how great this breed is. I don't think I've seen them highlight another breed that had all positive attributes.

Me, I have mixed feelings about shows like this only because afterwards everyone wants one of those great dogs they saw on the show. Then you can end up with lots more GSPs in rescues and shelters because they weren't what the new owners thought they were going to be. Samething happens when a breed wins Westminster or Disney releases a cute animal movie like 101 Dalmatians or Lady and the Tramp. I would, however, have loved to have seen it, but was out of town and didn't get Animal Planet.

Bev Quarles, the Pointer Sisters (Belle and Halo), the Outlaw GSP (Johnny Ringo) and the little Princess (Fauna)
