Just wondering if I am the only one that does this...I brushed my boxers teeth her entire life and the vet always said she had nice teeth and he never had to do the cleaning.  I probably did it about 4 times a year and I just used the stuff they sell in the pet stores.  I plan on doing this with Blitz too.  I think I waited to do my boxers until she had her adult teeth.  She never gave me a hard time so I hope it goes smooth with Blitz!

We give rawhides 2-3times a year and this takes care of the plaque. Also, during big game season (for about 3 months) the dogs get a raw diet and uncooked bones once a week.

Our oldest mixed breed maddy is 14 years old and the vet always says shes got the best teeth hes ever seen and that they look like theyre the teeth of a young dog. we never brushed her teeth, but our dogs get rawhides and other chews often which probably helps alot. when i get my puppy though i do plan on brushing his teeth to keep them in good shape

I brush my dogs teeth and give bones and rawhide chews to my dogs and they all have nice teeth. I also scale their teeth with a dental tool if anyone needs it. I will say each of my dogs is different with regard to the plac on their teeth. Belle never has plac, but Halo gets a little plac. They both get their teeth brushed and get bones, but I think plac buildup like everything else also has a genetic component. So, even if you brush, give bones, etc. they could still get some buildup. Anytime my dogs are going in for a medical procedure I also have the vet check and if needed clean teeth. I had Halo's teeth done (even though they weren't bad) when I had the xrays done for her OFA hips and elbows.

I second what Bev said, I think it has more to do with genetics than brushing. When my vet recommended brushing, he was talking about 3-4 times a WEEK not year. I had the best intentions but...couldn't keep that up. None of my bulldogs had much plaque.

With Tessa I see some build-up already at 15 months - nothing bad but it's starting on a few of the molars, so I will have that taken care of when she will be spayed next week, and after that will do some scaling myself on a regular basis. She does chew on bones and antlers daily.

I can only recommend having the teeth checked and cleaned as needed anytime the dog is under, unless that would conflict somehow with what else is going on with the dog.

I have always fed rawhides too...I didn't know if they really helped or if that was just advertising....

We brush - our vet says we really need to since Osiris seems to have lots of plaque for some reason. We have a hard time doing it, though, because Osiris tries to eat the toothpast while we brush. It is a two person job for sure. Oh, and it is Chicken Flavored toothpaste! ICK, but he loves it!

We also do rawhides, Greenies (but they are expensive) and the Pedigree Good Bites for Dental Care and he loves those!

But still, we have plaque and his breath smells like BUTT or dead fish most of the time.
