I was just curious to see when new born pups begin to get their ticking? I said in an earlier post that my pup was born early yesterday morning. I was looking at some pics and my choice is going to eventually be between the two males. One has 3 liverspots and is mostly white but the breeder said he thinks he'll tick out nicely. The other male has alot of liver on his back and his legs and chest and some small patches between his spots are white. Im gonna make my decision based on the pups personalities when I go up to choose him in the future I was just wondering when they begin to show some of their adult coloring

Pups start coloring the day they are born. You can see the ticking and roan under the little white hairs, coming up. If a dog does not have the darkness appearing by the second week it will probably stay lighter. Anyway, that's the method I use.
For a little advice on choosing a puppy -
Let the little guy choose you. Now, if that happens to be a female, well then, you're stuck.
I often feel that for newbies females are better. Many people are not prepared for the level of drive in most GSPs. And since you are a guy......

This has been discussed many times on this forum.  Here are some links where I posted pictures of the various stages of colors as the GSP ages.

I think this one is the best: www.shorthairs.net/GSPForum/tabid/220/forumid/2/tpage/1/view/topic/postid/36450/Default.aspx#36472

You will have to scroll down to see the pictures with the color/ticking progression.

Here are couple of other links to similar discussions:

Xara was solid white at 1 week, by the end of the second week you could begin to see the spots under the white fur, by 4 weeks she was without a doubt a roan and her roan coloration is still getting darker at 14 weeks. I was very shocked at how much more roan she had in her than even when I picked her up at 8 weeks of age when I looked at pictures of her last night.

In General I would agree with Pixie about the sex of the dog but you NEED to talk to your breeder. Some lines are the exact opposite.

With my line the females are the hard headed bird freaks and the males are the people loving eager to please bird freaks.

I also agree with her statement about letting the puppy choose you. This may sound stupid but its true you dont get to choose your puppy, the puppies will choose you.
