Puppy stupids is my name for it. Usually happens around 8 to 15 months. Earlier for girls, later for boys. My girls went through it from around 9 months to a year. My boy it was from about 1 year to 16 months. Lasted longer with him too. I equate it to the teenage years. They think they know everything and don't listen very well.

BTW the puppy stupids come in waves - it's not non-stop for a year or so :) Every once in a while your dog will be the lovely, smart, cooperative, devoted dog you thought you had (before it goes back to the puppy stupids). During those good days you will realize that all the hard work will be absorbed by the dog, even if it doesn't look like it, so keep training!

I got so used to the puppy stupids that when Tessa was being good, my first thought always was that she must be sick :)

Cheers for the heads up..i'll make the most of him while he still listens to me then!  Is this breed specific, or do most puppies behave this way?

We are in the throws of the puppy stupids right now, in fact.  I will also concur that it comes in waves...some phenominal days (Tuesday), some terrible days (Wed).  The worst was two weeks ago when out hunting.  She had been a dream for the whole hunting season up until that day.  Completely inattentive to commands...whistle, hand signals, working close, retrieve, everything.  I sort of equate it to ADD for GSP...she hears me and understands, but she's too mentally distracted to obey.

Needless to say our day ended very, very quickly.

Not too sure about other breeds...

It applies to all breeds but not to all individuals. My first bulldog was a delightful puppy and adolescent. Back then I thought people are making these stories up.

Francine: it's the truth - the days when she just "wasn't herself" always worried me.

It applies to all breeds, but seems to me more pronounced in GSPs. Maybe I do more training now and I just notice it more.
