I don't think anyone culls - if you mean kill. Most people consider culling these days as taking them out of the breeding pool, either 'fix' them or just not breed. Usually tho, when you have breedings with a long line of hunting and tested dogs there is little chance of a true dud. Some may perform better than others but they will usually all be able to perform at some level. The dogs are already at the new homes and much responsibility is in the hands of the new owner. Which can be scary thought in itself.

Oh darn I was gonna say I love the all livers...my original plan was to get one, but I let my kids pick out by all the available pups personality which is probably the best option.

Just to clear up what I said about that kennel. I have no problem with a breeder wanting to only sell to hunters because they want to keep their name in good standings being that GSP's are bred to hunt. I just thought he/she got a little rough when they started bad mouthing the breeders that don't do that cuz I am all about doing what is right for you and letting everyone else can have their own opinions...of course as long as there are no safety issues or neglect involved in those opinions or decisions. I in no way want to start any problems...

OMG!  I just found this girl....

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=14226778

The listing on her is as follows:

Tassie has been a loved and adored girl since she was born. Tassie is AKC Registered, Housebroken, crate trained. Microchipped, Spayed, UTD on Vaccines, Heartworm Negative and on preventative. Tassie would be a wonderful prospect for agility training. She would be a great running partner also. Tassie needs a large fenced yard, and companions. Children, and maybe another dog would be a great fit for this great girl. Tassie is NOT A HUNTER, Tassie is a companion and needs to have an active loving family where she is part of life. If she sounds like a great fit for your family please apply today.

I am so sorry - she was very pretty.
Like I said before when it is right it will happen.
We were not looking to get another dog but this EP had been lost and we found her.
Come to find out the breeder/trainer lived on the other block, a couple houses down
from us. We returned her but all I could do was think of that dog (I made the mistake of naming her too), I swear i could hear the dog barking for me to come get her (no laughing). A few weeks later I ran into the breeder and asked about her and he told me she was sold. I was heartbroken, well the breeder called me a week later and our Daisy came to live with us. I like to think she found us we did not find her.

It will happen for you - have faith. Sometimes when we stop looking is when something comes to us.

Pixie: Yes there are breeders that still cull. there was a post regarding this in another forum. http://gundogforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=10376

My neighbors would probably not even know the difference between those girls and Leena

I emailed the one in Ohio and I am going to call the other one tomorrow.  Thank you!!

OMG I thought that was Leena!! What a look -Alike!!  Hope you find the right GSP and you will know when it happens.  My Husband and I went out for Wisconsin Friday night out for fish fry tonight. We discussed when the time comes when Rocky is no longer in our lives when he steps Over the Rainbow Bridge, we will adopt another GSP from the Rescue. So my plans will be to contact Lisa from our Shorthairs.net forum who Rescues Wisconsin GSPs and adopt a sweet female 45lb to 55 lb, (smaller dog  than Rocky)who needs a home. Also big news too, my Husband told me our youngest Son was going out to purchase an engagement ring today for his girl friend!!! So was a wonderful night out!!

Molly came from hunting stock and it shows when we take her out to the fields where she can run. I don't care to eat game and I wouldn't shoot any critter just for sport so I don't hunt. I totally disagree with the guy from Marshfield Kennels when he said that GSPs do not make good house dogs. Molly is a couch potato and a lover when inside as have all our GSPs. Granted if left alone and bored she can surf counters and get on the "good" furniture---a small price to pay for such devotion.
Elizabeth---have you thought about just visiting the shelters in your area. My son did that and came home with a wonderful well trained dog. It was supposed to be a GWP but who knows.

If your looking toward rescue, remember the 200+ GSP's from that South Dakota puppy mill. They are not available yet but it would be worth checking into, there were 5 females pregnant so they are going to have a ton of dogs. I would be willing to help with transport, you can usally get a transport train going & get them to you. Its on our face book.

So far the guy in SD is fighting to get his dogs back.  They were in court on Monday but last I heard a trial date had not been set.  I'm guessing if the dogs are turned over they will be looking for help from several rescue groups.  When the MO dogs came in this spring, several groups stepped up and help out by taking some in.

If you would like to consider a male, I've got three nice boys to choose from .   I'm sure we could work out some way to get one from MO to PA....

All three of my GSPs come from hunting lines and they are all three as different as night and day. Halo and Ringo who come from the same mom and related dad's are the most active, but can also be couch potatoes. Halo is my cuddle bug and Ringo is a momma's boy and loves attention. Belle who comes from totally different lines appears to most as a very calm dog. In reality, she has just as much get up and go as the other two, she just paces herself. I do not believe that GSPs have to hunt to be happy as long as they get lots of love and exercise they make excellent pets. I also think it is silly (but the breeders choice) to only sell to hunting families. What happens to the pups that are not good hunting prospects? I don't care how good the lines are, every once in a while they are bound to have a pup that just isn't a hunter. Also, why on earth would you rule out a potentially wonderful home for a pup just because that home is not a hunting home? Personally, I would rather a pup go to the best possible home.

With regard to temperament for training in obedience or agility, I think the main ingredient is a desire to please and work for you. You also will do better with a dog that is outgoing and confident. I actually think that dogs that excel in the field make good obedience dogs as well. I suspect that has allot to do with the ability to work independently and also think on their own.

Good luck in your continuing search. You will know it when you find the right dog.

Well, I am supposed to be going to visit a breeder near me around November. He is supposed to be breeding his female in December and if that all goes well, I would be getting a puppy in around April.

In the mean time, I am getting a Service Dog pup to raise. She is coming on Saturday. Her name is Lily. She is around 8 months and a Golden Retriever.

The SD's are usually bred to be on the smaller size. Though, the last male I had seemed pretty large.
