A guy on gundogforum has a litter of 4 week old GSP's for sale.  I have my name in to get a female when they are ready.

This is still very much up in the air as he is about 11 hours from me

Well, the tad older picture is one you are considering.

He/she does look as tho some heavy ticking will occur but I don't know if I would say it would darken enough to roan.

If you are willing to drive to PA I know of a great litter coming up in Beaver PA.

First off, I am glad that despite doubts you had a few months back about whether you can keep Leena and do her justice, you are staying with the breed. This confirms to me that you know the challenges you are in for, and are willing to work through them all over again in exchange for the company of one of these wonderful dogs.

Re making your pick, I would recommend you work with the breeder on that one and have him/her match you up with the right pup.

Puppy search is exciting and will still give you some time to work through the loss of Leena and adjust, and by the time you get the new dog, you'd be ready for it :)

Def. I am in no rush to get another dog. I just saw the post and thought the timing would work nicely. I asked him about their personalities and such.

You could adopt an older GSP from the GSP Rescue in your area. Typed in German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue WI in my seach engine on December 28,2001 (Rocky's 1st birthday. Came out with dogs for adoption pic of Rocky 10 month old 65lbs and fell absolutely in love with him.

My heart just melted when I found these pics of Rocky. Just knew he was the one to join our family. My friend across the street made this print that same night when I called her shared the Rescue link with her.Certainly was a majic moment!! I told my husband I wanted to adopt from rescue as I didnot want to go thur the puppy year as we went enough times with a young pup at 12 weeks old from a breeder. Rocky was spaded , all shots and micro chipped upon adoption. Just had to take him to our Vet to get him signed up and only shot I added was lyme shot. Best decision I ever made!!

The guy only had one solid liver female avail. She didnt sound like what I was exactly looking for, especially because of the distance. So, the search continues. :)

Good luck with your search!

If a dog is too far away maybe you can arrange for transport?  I'll be driving up to NY in early October and could help transport if you did find a dog

Elizabeth - I reside in TN but my children are in Ohio. So that being said, I would be more than happy to assit in a transport if it were to take that path of travel. I am always up for a surprise visit to the kids, and would absolutely love to assist you if I can. Wouldn't you like to find a nice "Southern Belle" to call your own? LOL Just remember that we are all here for you and I am sure that Somer and I are not the only ones that would be more than happy to assist you. So if you find a pup that is the one you want and the distance is a factor, let us know, and I am sure we can all figure out how to make it work for you.

I love road trips.... I love GSPs...... Sounds like a good combination. I am game! Let me know if you need me. I could also be used for a stop over if a transport needs a overnight stay in TN, because I have pleanty of room at the inn. :)

Thank you so much guys for your offers. Right now I'm talking to a gentleman who has a litter in NY...which would thankfully only be 3 hours from me lol

The more I think about your situation the more I think a rescue would be perfect. It would be older and house trained and all that puppy dedication would be behind you.

Rescue dogs are great, there are a surprising number of shorthairs available if you take the time to look.

I have been looking at rescues as well. I def want a dog that would be able to do performance events, (i.e. agility, rally, obedience), which is why I have been looking at puppies.

I don't see why a rescue couldn't perform. As a matter of fact, it's easier to gauge the temperament/dislikes/likes of an older dog than to guess on the potential of a pup. The dogs that end up with a GSP rescue seem to be very well and truthfully evaluated through their knowledgable foster home. There is one now I would be interested in (if I had the funds), he sounds just as nuts as Tessa LOL.

His name is Dexter and he sounds like a typical GSP!

www.segsprescue.org/NC/index.html

I didn't meet their standard last year because I don't have a yard (and was a first-time GSP owner) so I had to go through a breeder. I hope I have my foot in the door through ownership of Tessa so next time I can rescue. As fun and rewarding as starting with a puppy is - it has a lot of advantages - it is a very trying time that I don't mind skipping next time around :)
