I must admit that I too, had a good cry right before bed. We got our Penny around the same time you brought Leena into your lives and I guess it just hit home. I've been thinking about you and Leena all day. I must say though, it is absolutely wonderful to see the rally of support here on the forum.
For what it's worth, I wanted to offer a suggestion. For some, going out and getting a dog is a way to fill the void. I can't say I won't do the same myself when I lose one of my pets. However, I always thought a wonderful solution would be to foster an animal. That way, you temporarily fill the void and save a life. Who knows, maybe you'll end up falling in love with your new friend. If not, then at least you played a very important role in finding a forever home for a very deserving dog. Just food for thought ...
Like others have said, no dog will ever be Leena, but when you're ready I'm sure there will be more than enough love in your heart to welcome a new friend into the family.
Still thinking of you,
Laura |

| Laura, before I got Leena I was training Service dogs in my home for a program in CT. Since I got her, I havent had any in home. So, I was thinking about starting that up again. I think I want a dog I can give my heart to again and SD's leave after 3 months lol |

Just wonder how Bliss,Labrador is fairing with Leena gone?? Has he laid on her bed? Picked up any of her toys? He is a handsome boy and just love the picture you posted when Leena was a pup and his head rested on top of her. That pic is on my desk top screen. Special time with Bliss will help heal your heart too. You can dry your tears on his ears!!I have been drying my tears on Rocky's long GSP ears . Rocky's ears were there too in 2006 to dry my eyes when we lost our Snicker, Chese/lab girl. Just love all the poems our forum members have posted about losing a dog so close to you. |

| No, not at all. But I dont have Leena's things around any more. I couldnt take that. I honestly think Bliss has seen so many (service dog) puppies come and go over the years, she doesnt think much of it? I know she misses having a friend though. She def knows that we are all upset.. |

| I just wanted to say again how sorry I am about what happened to Leena. I cried for you and her when I read your post on FB. I know I hugged and kissed my gang a little more than usual. I have to say I can't do SD training because once a dog is in my house I don't want to let them go. I know in the end things will work out, but I also know how much you miss Leena. Hang in there and give Bliss a little extra loving tonight. |

So sorry didnot know Bliss was a girl. Glad she is doing OK. For Rocky, left Snickers bed there for Rocky to sniff and laid on it a few times. Rocky even carried a few of his toys and placed them on her bed. Rocky spent 3 years with her when he came to our house so I felt he needed some closure time with her things as a way to say good-bye to her.Had people tell me I should let Rocky see Snickers dead body so he could see she was not coming back, but I just couldnot do that... Bliss is a beautiful Labrador, glad she is adjusting ok! Can certainly understand why you didnot have time to do Service Dog Fostering with a new GSP pup. Maybe you will have Golden Retriever in your house soon as Service Dog Trainee. |

I loved the poems everyone has posted, so very touching and so very true. When I lost my Dundee, I too felt this horrible void (even having 3 other dogs around didn't fill it), and I went and got Sniper a week after losing Dun. Many people condemned me for it, said I didn't give myself time to grieve, that I didn't give the other dogs time to adjust, and that I must not have loved him very much to replace him so soon. What they didn't understand was that I had began grieving his loss the day he started to show signs of arthritis and developed cataracts, the signs that let us know our time is borrowed with them. My other dogs had each other, they, with the exception of Sienna, only knew he was gone but they didn't fret over it, Yes, Sienna DID grieve him, she actually had to be medicated for a time. And you know as well as I, you never, ever replace them. You can't, they are each unique and special to us in their own way. But we do have to move on, and I do believe that it is a great honor to them that we wish to share our love with another dog. I know without a doubt Dundee would have hated to see me not move on. I also know without a shadow of a doubt that he's still here, with me, around me, and watching me. He never really left. If you feel in your heart that having another to follow in Leena's footsteps is what will help you grieve, what will help you heal, then I say go for it. Only you know what is in your heart. |

| Well said MelB. I too have always gotten pups fairly quickly after I have lost one of my furkids. The one time I didn't do that, well I was just lost. There is nothing wrong with getting a new pup. Everyone grieves in a different way. Some need the time to mourn, others mourn by sharing their love with a new pup. All I can say is whatever works for you as an individual is right. |

Well said both MelB and Bev. Let's also remember that dogs live in the moment, unlike us, who rarely do. Hardly ever, actually. We either dwell in the past or plan for the future. A concept that is foreign to our dogs, so the argument that a dog would resent us moving on to the next quickly doesn't really stick. How I envy dogs. |

I am so sorry for your loss. I am writing this with tears in my eyes. You and Leena are in my prayers. As time passes your hurt will ease, and you will remember Leena as the young, beautiful, vibrant, active pup that she was (she will always be young) and she will forever hold a special place in your heart. Many years back, the James Herriot (a vet from England) books were very popular, and I read them all. In one of them, he talks about the subject of replacing a dog. I don't remember the words exactly, but to paraphrase: Getting a replacement is a tribute to your former dog. It shows that your dog was such a great dog. Your dog would want you to get another dog, she would never want you to hurt. Caring for a new dog helps transition you through the mourning period. He also talks about, and agrees that dogs do go to heaven.

I am so sorry, it is such a tragedy to lose a young dog. Field training and hunting dogs often times puts them in harms way. … but it is their purpose and driving force. Leena lost her life in pursuit of what she loved most; exploring the outdoors with those she loved the most. I can’t think of a better epitaph for any sporting dog. God bless. |

We said our final goodbyes yesterday. We spread Leena's ashes in one of her favorite (soybean) fields to run in. Everyone took some of her ashes and said a few words. It was really nice. We had a big audience of deer
One of my coworkers gave me a card today. I thought it was so nice. She is one of the real animal lovers at my work.
There must be a heaven for the animal friends we love.
They are not human, yet they bring out our own humanity...sometimes in ways that other people cannot.
They do not worry about fame or fortune...instead, they bring out hearts nearer to the joy of simple things.
Each day they teach us little lessons in trust and steadfast affection.
Whatever heaven may be, there's surely a place in it for friends as good as these.

Godspeed, Leena! There is an epitaph by Henry van Dyke I have always loved: I am standing by the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a peck of white cloud just where the sun and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, 'There she goes! Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the places of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, 'There she goes! ' , there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout : 'Here she comes!' *** I think I can see Leena running off across the soybean field into the distance, much like that ship in the poem. |

| What a lovely way to remember her. I'm sitting here sobbing, and I know that when the time (hopefully far, far off) comes to remember my dogs I will spread their ashes in one of the forests they love to tramp through. |

Before I read your post Tessa, I was thinking that too. Looking at that beautiful picture with the big fluffly clouds, I was imagining Leena...and all the dogs I've loved over the years, as little specks running freely across that field--in doggie heaven. RIP Leena

Elizabeth, My deepest sympathies on your loss. You can never really prepare yourself to lose a loved one, even when they're old and near their end. But it's even more heartbreaking to lose a friend and companion when they're so young and full of life. My thoughts are with you. Larry |
