I'm sorry to read about this. Just awful to go through.

All I can say is remember the good times and that you gave her a wonderful life while she was with you. She'll always be with you, no matter what.

There's a poem somewhere about not needing to worry about memorials or resting places for our pets, because their true resting place is in our hearts.  Please accept my condolences too, and may Leena always stay in your heart, joyous and beautiful.

"... There is one best place to bury a dog. One place that is best of all. If you bury him in this spot, the secret of which you must already have, he will come to you when you call -- come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they should not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he is yours and he belongs there.

People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper pitched too fine for mere audition, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them then, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.

The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master."

Ben Hur Lampman

I never thought I'd be one of those people, but I could go out today and get another dog. I guess just to fill that void...sorta like how people have rebound relationships LOL

When my Clio died, I could hardly bear to wait a few days before contacting a rescue.  I even told them she'd been gone for a few weeks so they wouldn't think I was making a decision out of irrational grief!  As it happened, Chelsea was received by the rescue on the day Clio died, and in her more annoying moments Chelsea seems to be "channelling" her predecessor, who probably finds it hysterically funny to see me fuming and tearing my hair just as I did with her!

So perhaps Leena will "choose" a dog for you sooner rather than later. . .

IMO to open your heart to another dog, is the best way to honor Leena. As if to say that even though her loss causes you so much pain, the joy of the time spent with her is stronger than the pain. This way, life wins, and death loses.

Make sure you are ready though and pick the right dog, not just any dog. You may still be a little shell-shocked...

Please keep in touch.

OMG. I haven't been on here lately, and a friend told me about this post about Leena. Elizabeth there are no words that can express the sorrow I feel for you and your family's loss of Leena. I hope the pain of her loss gets easier with time, and her memory lives loudly and happily in your heart...forever..Hugs

Elizabeth.... I know just what you are talking about. I lost my "DUDE" in June of 2005. By August of the same year I had found my "TYLER". My husband hated him at first because he looked so much like Dude but it was what I needed to do in order to fill the VOID. He can NEVER replace Dude in my heart but at the same time he has filled my home with the joy that was missing. The soft nuzzle of a cold nose. The gentle pat of a paw on my knee. The soulful eyes that just seem to say "I love you". I too am one of those people and I am proud of that fact. Through my loss I was able to rescue another dear soul and provide the HOME that he needed. GOD Bless you and guide you in your decision.

I am the same way with filling the voide. It will never replace the loved dog we lost but it will fill some sort of emptyness . If you feel you are ready and wanting to get another dog I say go for it!

I stood by your bed last night... I came to have a peep. I could see that you'd been crying, And you found it hard to sleep

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear, "It's me. I haven't left you. I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast... I watched you pour your tea. You were thinking of the many times Your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at my grave today... You tend to it with such care. I want to reassure you That I'm not lying there.

I walked you towards the house As you fumbled for the key. I gently put my paw on you... I smiled and said, "its me."

You looked so very tired As you sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know That I was sitting there.

It's wonderful for me to be So near you everyday, To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, Then smiled... I think you knew That in the stillness of the evening I was very close to you.

And when the time is right for you To cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to meet you And we'll stand there side by side.

I have so many things to show you! There's so much for you to see.

Be patient, live your journey out, Then come home to be with me.

Elizabeth, I am sending big comforting hugs your way.... I have been since you posted that she was gone. I am so sad for you.

But she is running in the sunny doggie fields and she will be waiting for you when you get there, too.

I think that getting another one to honor her memory is just wonderful. Another dog can never be Leena, but you will love that new dog in it's own way. You were a light Leena's life, taking her in a loving her. Now it's ok to do that for another dog.

I agree with Annette that I am glad you got to find out what happened and have some closure.

We are here for you in spirit if not in person. We have a little family here.

Love, Caryl

So sorry. They do leave a hole when they go.

Damn that poem.  I was going on a pretty good stretch of a few hours not crying

Leena is my first GSP...and she was def the most living, cuddle wanting dog I've had.  Goldens and Labradors have nothing on her wanted to be right with me 24 hours, 7 days/week!

One of my favorite pictures of Leena. She is about 10 weeks old here.

When she was so small she could fit on the front seat

Day after we got her. She is around 10 weeks old?

I know, I know.... it made me cry, too.  But I thought it was beautiful and I wanted to share it.  I hope you don't mind.  She was a perfect puppy, wasn't she?
