I take Dieter almost everywhere I go. Not to many people pass by without stopping. People always wanna know what kind and how old? Im so sick of saying GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER! haha..its a long name! haha anyway out of all the poeple i have met with him..and there were lots! 4 people knew he was a German Shorthaired Pointer. This thread is for all the people who come up to you and say "is that a (breed)"...so what has your dog been called. I have been asked if he is a..Blue Tick, Springer (a couple of times! i dont see the resemblance), Dachshund (when only his head was sticking out of my arms) and most of all..."what is he, a chocolate lab mix"?
so..what breed has your dog been mistaking for? |

I get asked if Randi os a springer all the time! BUT, I am surprised at how many people know what she is. I get stopped all the time too. I have to say I don't mind when people tell me how beautiful she is! lol |

I hear Blue Tick a lot. Some kind of hound. But I live in Georgia so I hear "oh is that a Shorthair?" as often as I hear "what is she?". Ratio is about 50/50.
There is a deaf homeless lady in town, the first time she saw us she pointed to Tessa and moved her arms as if flapping wings, then "shot" in the air as if downing a bird. That was pretty cool - that she knew Tessa was a bird dog, and how she communicated it.
Just last Saturday I was walking Tessa through the tailgating crowd at UGA and one student - a little drunk already - exclaimed quite loudly: "Oh my God, she has one! That's what I want!"
I am not sure she really knew what "I had", we didn't get to that point |

Lab mix, Dalmatian, Catahoula, Blue Tick, Pointer (English), Springer, Weimeraner mix That said there are also an awful lot of folks that know my dogs are GSPs too. Of course I live in TX and allot of folks bird hunt in this state and are familiar with the breed. |

| My favorites...a Blue heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) and "there's a dalmatian"..."do dalmatians bite? " "I don't know, but we better go the other way, that one looks big and he has his tail chopped off so must have gotten into a fight" (two kids walking across a field where I was running my first GSP, Roper...about 20 years ago). Smile....sometimes when I say a German Shorthaired Pointer, they think I say, "German Shepherd Pointer" and I hear, "I thought they had long hair", and "they make good police dogs". Eeeeeeekkkk! |

Since Murf is all liver we get Chocolate Lab ALL the time! Or the occasional Weimaraner. My boyfriend gets a little aggravated with the Chocolate Lab questions, not that there is anything wrong with Labs, but Murf really doesn't look like a lab in the slightest, especially when that stubby tail starts going a million miles an hour! When BF gets those questions I just tell him to tell people that Murf's an extremely rare "German Chocolate Lab" |

so far not too many here have any idea what Xara is, I get "lab mix" a lot. GSP's aren't too common here. She was called a weim once, and even a dalmation. My springers get called brittany's a lot, and Sienna was even listed at the vet as a Welsh Springer Spaniel, which I never noticed until recently. My cocker everyone knows what he is so he never gets mixed up breed wise. |

LOL singltrak...that exchange is hilarious! I once walked my American Bulldog (all white) and a kid across the street said "look mom, a Dalmatian without spots!" I am still laughing about that one. |

| Oh man I feel like I have it easy with the GSP's. I also own American Pitbull Terriers. It is a never ending battling with them. I get boxer a lot and the ones who their kids are loving on my APBT and they then ask what kind of dog and I tell them and they pull the kid away. Like the second I say what kind of dog it is the dog knows to bite or something. GEESH! |

| I agree, my Aunt used to raise pits years ago and hers were the most loving, docile, even tempered dogs out there. I'd sooner walk up to a pit I don't know than a GSD I don't know! |

When Dulcie was a tiny puppy, we had a local nutjob in the vet's office driving them crazy with her own dog-related drama so she was kicked out into the waiting room momentarily. Pacing around with nothing better to do, she soon commented about what a beautiful 'rare' liver Dalmatian we had. We just chuckled and replied "No, she's a German Shorthaired Pointer... it's a hunting breed." She immediately rose up, snorted loudly, and said "WELL. *I* NEVER HEARD OF THAT BREED." And stomped off to pester the vet some more. I think we just about asphyxiated ourselves trying not to laugh. When Dulcie was young the pee-dam would break every time something exiting happened- which was any time people came over to the house- so we decided if we got another question like that from a real whack job, we'd tell them she was a "Short-Tailed Piddle Pointer". |

Dalmation is (by far) the one I hear the most. Honestly, I don't blame people for this...in our area, sporting breeds are not very common. Everyone up north Michigan knows exactly what she is.

Although, I've definitely had some pretty ridiculous ones. My favorite is a really nice gentlemen in my neighborhood who repeatedly calls her a Brittany. The first time we met he says "She's a beautiful Brittany". I didn't have time to correct him, and at first I thought he was just confused (got his bird dog names mixed up). About a week later I see him again and he proclaims "I had a Brittany that looked just like her! She was the best flushing dog I ever had."
Interesting, a flushing Brittany that looks like a GSP, huh? Those must be pretty rare! |

| We've had Dalmation, Rottweiler, Boxer, Chocolate Lab, Lab/Dalm Mix, Pit Bull, Doberman. There really aren't too many of these guys where I live -- I'm always really impressed when people do know what are dogs are. |
