Jean: I am so very sorry for the diagnosis. Just love her, and make the most of your time together. I had a cocker spaniel named Reggie that was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer at 8 yrs. The vet put him on prednisone to make him comfortable, & so we could have some quality time together. That was back when I was single, and Reggie and I used to enjoy camping trips, so one of the last things we did together was to go on a weekend camping trip, just he and I. Kaiser, my 13 year old GSP has what apears to be canine cognitive disorder (dementia), and he is on what I call "comfort care", we do what we can to make him comfortable, but will do no heroic medical care. Kaiser has lived longer than any other dog that I've had, and I read somewhere the average life expectancy for a shorthair is 12 years, 3 mos., so every additional day we have with Kaiser is a gift. I've had alot of good dogs over the years, but Kaiser is that special one, and he will always carry a special place in my husband's and my hearts. From what I've experienced and researched, dogs don't die of heart disease. Their lives are ended by 2 main causes, either strokes or cancers. I've lost dogs to both, and each and every time. I had to have them put down. Hard to do, but you will know when the time comes. There will be an expression in their eyes, hard to explain, but there will be an emptiness (or hollowness) iin their eyes, as if they are telling you that it is their time. Cats on the other hand, do actually die from old age (I had ones that lived to 17, 18 and 21) and they seem to just pass away in their sleep. Either way, losing them is hard. But dying is a part of living, and it is the price we pay for opening our homes and our hearts to our pets. |

I'd love to know where that longetivity statistic came from -- it sounds pretty precise. Personally we've had two live past 15, but have lost two to cancers, and have one at 10 and one at 8 pressing ahead with very active healthy lives. The GSPCA health survey found the median age of the deceased dogs to be under the longetivity statistic you quote, but my experience is for longer lives (e.g. 14 years or older) for GSPs not hit by cancers.
Of cancers the #1 by far is Mammary Cancer and (of course) found primarily in bitches. The two we lost were to Mammary and Hemangiosarcoma -- neither easy ways to go.
The top 5 issues that GSPs died of in the GSPCA health survey were: Cancer, Old Age, Euthanasia, Gastrointestinal problems, and Heart Disease/problems. Cancer, Old Age, and Euthanasia combined for 53% of the deaths in GSPs --
If you'd like to read the entire survey it is on the GSPCA web site at:

| It would have been interesting to have also know why the dogs were euthanized. |

Jean: I was curious how things are looking. We were devastated to find that my Standard Smooth Dachshund "Zin" was just diagnosed with a breast tumor. This one is situated differently than Magic's was, so it perhaps will be controllable. She is going under the knife in the next month (scheduling is in progress). Unlike Magic's, which we saw grow in size in a day or two, Zin's has remained about the same size since we detected a lump. My fingers are crossed for this dynamo of a Dachshund which rules a pack of 5 High Engergy GSPs will survive, although the odds are not good with this cancer. In history, she is the only Smooth and the only Standard Dachshund ever to earn an AKC Championship Tracker (CT) title (there were only 190 CTs of any breed at the time she earned it, and she was the 5th of now 6 Dachshunds to earn it -- as an aside only one GSP in history has earned that title). She is the "foot of the bed" warmer (envision throwing a "tube sand" bag at the base of your bed and you'll get an idea of what a standard dachshund is like). :-( Dave |

| Sorry to hear about both Jean's dog and your dog, Dave. My fingers are crossed that both will have good quality time for whatever time they both have with you. I have had many dogs over the years and so far none have died from cancer. One of my cockers was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, but actually died from heart failure before the cancer was bad enough for her to even be aware of it. I also had a greyhound who had mammary cancer which was surgically removed. This was way before they did chemo and radiation on dogs. The vets didn't think she would survive, but she lived to be around 11 years old and died from old age. So you never know with these guys. Just love them while they are with you. |

Yeah -- the vet (who has 40 years experience) feels this one has a good chance to be survivable. We'll see. I was just struck by the closeness of this and Jean's situation.

Hi Dave - and thanks for asking. Rosie continues to act like nothing is wrong - although the pack knows something is up and is very paternalistic towards her now, very interesting to watch. To the point that I worry that if they were to perceive a threat to her, they would move swiftly to eliminate it.
We took her out training (she hasn’t been in YEARS) weekend before last and it was a blast to watch her. On her own bird, she held till the shot. (Prior to retirement, she was broke to shot and honored without a verbal caution and then didn't need to be collared - remember she was our personal gundog, not a trial dog). Then we had Willow and Thunder each do a callback and brought Rosie in to honor – hoping she would screw it up. She was SO JACKED UP that she did honor, but then crept in and stole point on Thunder’s bird. Then Blair flushed it and shot it and Rosie promptly retrieved his bird. That’s what we were hoping for as those screwed up situations happen at trials. Thunder stood perfectly through it so I was happy. Then it was Willow’s turn. Rosie “flash honored” then stole point, then decided to jump right in and grab the bird. She chased it all over (too young to fly very well) and caught it, then retrieved it to Blair. Willow was PISSED but also held perfectly. Never seen an old fat dog have so much fun “un-breaking” herself. Once she figured out there were no negative consequences (which there won’t be for the rest of her time, however long that is) she was a wild animal. It’s actually beneficial to have a dog to screw things up. Willow and Thunder, however, looked at us and clearly said “Who the hell brought Mom??!”
I am happy to say that she has already exceeded the vet's most pessimistic prediction of 2 weeks on the low end. So far she has no outward signs of lung mets - no coughing, no difficulty breathing whether running or not. I did unfortunately find the beginning of another mammary tumor and am watching it. It does not seem to be growing terribly fast - certainly not as fast as your Magic's grew, and that gives me some hope that it won't be terribly soon.
I'll keep your Zin in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep me posted on how she does. It helps to feel like we're all in this together.
Jean

Jean -- thank you for sharing Rosie's day out -- it sounded fantastic -- thinking about it in retrospect brings a tear to my eye -- she must have had the time of her life, and the other dogs got a good day of training to boot. What a GREAT story!!!! Here is to another two years of stories like that one! Dave |

| God we love these dogs and boy do they rip our hearts out, but then that is why we love them. Give Rosie a big hug and kiss. The good times make it all worth while. Rosie and you will be in my prayers. |
