My puppy recently weighed in at 19 plus pounds at 12 and 1/2 weeks. Is this in the normal range. She was 11 pounds at 8 weeks. I was told by my vet to make sure she grew slowly and I have watched the amount I have fed her. I was very surprised she weighed so much. I can feel her ribs when I pet her. Any thoughts? Her mom weighs 60 pounds. Thank you

For what it's worth, my 14 w/o girl weighs in at 17.5 pounds and eats like a horse. I'm looking forward to hearing what the experts say because I'm also a little worried about how fast she's growing but I'm reluctant to adjust her feeding because she's still all skin 'n bones.

Tessa weighed 24 lbs at 12 weeks - a heavy-weight! Once she hit 45 lbs around 7 months or so she pretty much stopped...I think she is at 48 now (14 months). So while the guess was she would top out at just below 60, the upper range for females, I seriously doubt that now.

I am curious too about the weights of puppies! Mine will be 10 weeks tomorrow and is going to the vet for the final puppy shots and I will finally get a weight for him. I don't think he is on the heavy side at all though...

Jenny was 25lbs at 12 weeks. She was the biggest puppy in her entire litter (boys and girls) She has slowed down since then but made her brother look tiny when we picked her up

Leena was so skinny when we adopted her. She was 14lbs at 11 weeks. She is now 42lbs at 10 months.

So I went back and pulled the records on all my dogs to see there weights. Here is what I have:

Belle (5 YO female)
10 weeks (when I got her) - 16 lbs (she was runt in her litter)
3 months - 20 lbs
Today (she will be 6 in a couple of weeks) - 55 lbs (she is 25 inches at the withers, a big female)

Halo (4 YO female)
8 weeks (when I got her) - 12 lbs
3 months - 20 lbs
Today (4.5 YO) - 50 lbs (she is 22.5 inches at the withers, average size female)

Ringo (1 YO male, was the largest in the litter at birth)
8 weeks (when I got him) - 10 lbs
3 months - 21 lbs
Today (a little over a year) - 62 lbs (he is 25 inches at the withers, a big male, he is still adding muscle and weight, but not height)

Interestingly enough at 8 weeks my smallest dog, Halo, weighed the most. At three months they were all three almost the same weight.

Bev Quarles, the Pointer Sisters (Belle and Halo), the Outlaw GSP (Johnny Ringo) and the little Princess (Fauna)

Nice chart, goes to show initial weight is not necessarily predicative of final weight.

Thank you so much for the information. Is there a weight/ height chart out there anywhere for German Shorthair puppies. I couldn't find one on the internet. From what everyone has posted, there is certainly some variance in the puppies. I just dont want my female to grow too fast so I am trying to get a grip on whether she is in the normal range considering her mother is a large female( 60 pounds, 25 inches). She is not at all over weight but I wasn't feeding her large breed puppy food which I have JUST been told to do. Apparantly  regular puppy food and high protein dog food contains higher ratio of phosphorus/calcium and protein and it makes a puppy grow to fast. I am so confused!

I would say she is right on target as to where she needs to be at 12 weeks. Don't worry about what her mother weighed as she may or may not take after her mom. In my boys litter the mother was an average size bitch about the same size as my girl, Halo. The dad was on the high end for males. The litter had a small female who is about 21 inches at the withers and probably around 45 lbs and my boy, Ringo, who is a good 4 inches taller and weighs about 61 lbs. Who is telling you to switch puppy foods? What is the reason? Growth seems absolutely normal from what you have said in your posts.

I have never seen a weight/height chart for shorthairs. Also, most folks when they see a shorthair that is in great shape will think the dog is too skinny. The best way to gauge your dog is:
1) Is the dogs coat healthy and shiny?
2) Do they have bright alert eyes?
3) Can you feel the ribs under the skin and/or see the last two ribs?
4) Does your dog have good energy?
5) Is your dogs stool solid and healthy looking?

If you answer yes to these questions, don't mess with what isn't broken.

By the way a GSP is not a large breed IMHO. A large breed is a Great Dane, Mastiff, Newfie, Swiss Mountain Dog, Saint Bernard, etc. I wouldn't even consider labs or Goldens to be large breed dogs. However, GSPs are high energy dogs and burn calories like crazy and because of that they typically need a good high protein food.

I would also recommend you search this forum as there are several threads that discuss the types/brands of dog food that folks use that you might find useful.

welcome to the world of GSP!!! Your puppies are at a stage where you put them to bed and they are the size of a little lap dog.. you get them up the next morning and they have doubled in size overnight. (ok that may be an exaggeration.. but not much of one)

Randi was at her vet check up last week at 10 1/2 weeks and was 16 lbs. The vet said that it was a good size for her. I only feed her a cup of food twice a day and feel like I'm starving her because she's so skinny!

She sounds like she is similar in weight to my puppy. I was feeding her three times a day about 2 and 1/4 cups total. My vet said to go up to 3 cups if she is hungry but over three meals. I am now feeding her lower phosphorus/ calcium food so I am not so worried that she will grow too fast. She would eat 6 cups of food if I would give it to her LOL so I am still trying to stay around 2 1/2 cups or so. I give her treats though and sometimes add some chicken.

Blitz checked in at 17 pounds at 10 weeks old...Right now he eats between 3 - 4 cups a day in 2 feedings and treats. He never gobbles down his food all the way at the feedings and I only leave his bowl down for an hour. Sometimes he finishes all in that hour and other times he doesn't.

Blitz had another vet visit yesterday.....so his updated weight is

13 weeks 25.6 lbs

Vet says he will be on the high side of the male standard if he keeps growing like this. They haven't measure his height and I tried at home, but I couldn't get him to stand still....
